Find it amusing we're speculating on a 'type'. If we go via the public record not possible. besides I thought the pic was cute (matching shirts! precursor to Houston/Costner 'The Bodyguard'??!!) RN is Australian and I suspect this was shot during the first tour. I have also seen him accompany LR at awards shows.

RN is Australian and I suspect this was shot during the first tour. I have also seen him accompany LR at awards shows. As mentioned earlier, anything was possible. If Linda had a relationship with Richard Norton, it was a relationship that was off the news media radar, especially the tabloid media radar. He didn't look like her type but the curious thing is maybe that's why the news media didn't connect the two. They, and the public as well, were used to celebrities dating other celebrities rather than non-celebrities. A celebrity dating a non-celebrity isn't unheard of but it's more the rarity. And in Linda's case, she did date other celebrities, musicians, Gov. Brown. It would've been impossible for Linda in the 70s to date someone without the media knowing it but if she did date Norton (or any other non-celebrity), she kept that relationship well hidden from the news media.

my point really is who cares if she dated Norton? Lot of judgement about the man.

I don't think anyone cares who she has been with. it was just an odd pairing IMO. from later pic's he seems to be a nice looking man and probably has a hot young wife. From Linda' past beau's.. she normally went for brainy vs brawny.. who knows this guy may have been both..

My husband and I were in Frankfurt, Germany in late '76 and saw Linda and a man having dinner at a restaurant we were at. They were obviously quite close given the body language. He was about her age or a little older, wearing a suit and tie. Very good looking with long hair. Reminded us a little of Neil Diamond. Anyway, my husband was enchanted with Linda and we waited till dinner was over and then he approached their table to ask for an autograph. The man stood up to sort of protect her when Linda said it was OK. According to my husband, she called him rick. They left the restaurant shortly thereafter hand in hand. There was definitely something between them and they were a really good looking couple. My husband always thought that meeting her was a highlight of his life. Like so many men of the era he had a soft spot in his heart for her. My husband also said he thought he had a New York accent.

That sounds a lot more plausible. Thanks for sharing the story about your brief encounter in Germany. Meeting Linda was the highlight of my life, too.

I have just come across an article in The Spokane Chronicle from 3 October 1990 that stated that:

Even if this story is true, the fact that Rick the Bodyguard has never tried to capitalize off the relationship speaks volumes about him and Linda's taste in men! Privacy and discretion are so important to Linda!

Privacy and discretion are so important to Linda! Very interesting and astute observation, Lance. You gotta give Rick the Bodyguard credit for that. Actually, that photo of them together is rather charming, in a hipper Captain and Tenille '70s sort of way. Although it does make one wonder: who took the picture?

She mentions Richard her bodyguard in her book, during the time of Pirates (page 137). Then a few pages later mentions that she was "keeping steady company" with journalist Pete Hamill. So I doubt Richard was the Rick you're speaking of. Looks like he was just her bodyguard, while Pete was her beau at the time.

I saw Linda with Pete Hamill a number of times during Pirates of Penzance, but don't recall seeing this bodyguard guy. She had other people escorting her into the stage door on Broadway and the bodyguard (Floyd) for Rex Smith also stepped in at times.

In 1973/74 I was a ticket agent for the Worchester, Ma. airport. Linda was performing @ Clark university in Worchester in February. 74 & my brother who was living in Boston and wAs crazy about Linda got tickets for the both of us. it was a great concert. After the show I treated my brother to dinner at a small local place. As we were finishing dinner Linda came in with a man I recognized from the airport. He was a businessman who commuted to Worchester almost on a daily basis. It's now 40 years so I don't remember his last name. I do remember that his first name was Rick. I used to see him all the time at the Airport and sometimes helped him with his return flights to New York. He and Linda were in a corner of the restaurant and having told my brother that I new Linda's date he wanted me to go overto say hello. I knew my brother wanted to see Linda up close (she was gorgeous) so after we paid our bill walked over and I said hello to Rick. At first he was a little surprised At seeing me but than he was as nice as always. He introduced us both to Linda as if we didn't know who she was. 1 minute of chit chat and I asked Rick if I was going to see him at the airport and he said see you Mon. Rick was a really good looking man who as someone else mentioned reminded you of Neil Diamond. One other thing I'll say is that Linda & Rick definitely had something going on between them. As a woman I could tell bathe way they looked at each other. Rick only continued his commute for about another year and I never saw him after that. A really classy man. To bad they didn't marry.

Maybe it was Neil Diamond's brother Rick Diamond.

LoL
As far as I can tell, Neil diamond only has 1 brother, and his name is Harvey...
There is one pattern that emerges if you analyze Linda's life. She was laser-focused on her singing career, and she wouldn't let anything or anyone stand in the way of it. Unfortunately the kind of nomadic life she's led was not conducive to successful long-term romantic partnerships. She seems to be very level-headed and open minded, and remains friendly with most of the men in her life.

Whenever I see this topic, I think that Linda is like most of us, as quoted by Willie Nelson when asked about record sales:
"Ninety-nine percent of the world's lovers are not with their first choice. That's what makes the jukebox play." -Willie Nelson

Fairly certain I know who the Rick is. Anyone have any thoughts about divulging the info??? Can anyone think of a good reason to make it public? Maybe it's one of those things that should be left just between the two of them. Thoughts would be appreciated.

If he has a public persona, why not?
If he's a private citizen, then no.

Don't think it's Norton. Reading all the threads as well as hearing some stories from people who worked with her in the 70's there was only one man who had her heart and she has kept his identity secret all these years. Tom Jones recently revealed a long term relationship he had which no one knew about and maybe Linda will one day reveal who this mystery man is. I agree with the person who said that if this man is not in the public eye his identity should not be revealed.

On this show, Eddie Bravo Radio 26: Richard Norton (07/28/2013) He briefly mentions Linda at 1:32 and 1:35
@ 1:54 he mentions how he worked for John Belushi after meeting him backstage at SNL when he was there with Linda....
@ 1:55 he virtually admits he dated Linda.
He says he's not going to write a kiss and tell book but said he's close to finishing a book about what he's learned working with people at the top of their game...I can't find any books by him so I guess it's still not finished
@ 3:11 he says hardly a week went by without Linda seeking a vocal coach to teach her a new note
@ 3:16 he talks about interacting with a Mariachi bandmember

As they say in the Boston Mass area Richard seems to be "good shit." In other words a good guy. Down to Earth. Glad he isn't the kiss and tell type as it doesn't serve any purpose.

Reading through all the threads don't think it's her body guard. He is described by a couple of people who saw them together as a business man, suit and tie kind of guy. So think the mystery of her one true love remains just that.

I remember when Linda was about 40-43 years old, there was a tidbit in People Magazine that Linda was going to be marrying a musician. It was a part of the magazine that had news on various celebrities on 1 page or less.

THIS> "@ 3:11 he says hardly a week went by without Linda seeking a vocal coach to teach her a new note"
I find Hilarious!!! But, she was understood to have coached with Judy Davis, who I studied with, up in Claremont, outside of Oakland
"a new note"?
She always had the same notes!!!...I guess her technique changed after 1980 a tad, but "seeking" "weekly" sounds whack

I am trying to figure out when(or even if) Linda dated Jackson Browne. I see info in several books, but no real confirmation ever. Brown was married from 71-76 to Phyllis Major. If it was in the mid 70's, it would have to be after JD Souther (71-72?) Lowell George (73), and before Albert Brooks (76-77). They knew each other starting way back in the 60's, so I wonder if it way before JD Souther anyway. Was Rick Norton around 1976 too? Just wondering if someone has info.

I think it was around the time of the song (or just before) when he wrote Ready or Not. I think that song is in part about Linda, and possibly in part about his new wife. Others might argue this point but that is what I believe. Around that time Linda was quoted as saying she needed a washing machine (in the song) and listen to the last line of that song for a clue
