THIS!!!! Yes! I think we should smile and revel in the fact that the greatest singer is finally getting the recognition she deserves. I also think Jimmy Webb should be added to the list I posted before of people giving tribute to Linda.

WHO! in the World will do a Musical Tribute for Linda???
I just CANNOT imagine any female on the stage for the Iconic Kennedy tribute.....BUT!!! ala the Beautiful, Jack Black and Heart(ened) wonderful performance of Stair way for Led Zeppelin....THAT! I could see happening......
MAYBE....an Ed Sheehan or some others....I am not up on just yet....could do their own "RE IN"terpretation of a Linda Classique re write of her own vibe...or rather arrangement
Alison Desperado
AND!! how about a backing Choir
How about BRUNO MARS and a Choir on DOWN SO LOW???!!! (most peeps wouldn't remember that one unfortunately)
it WOULD be great to have Dolly and Emmy and YEP! I do believe Linda could at this point absolutely fill in her parts on some of those songs! too!!!!
Its SOOO X Citing .....just keep the Trumpsters away

I think I started this thread six or so years ago when getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was such a big deal. But now Linda is finally receiving a well-deserved honor that really matters - the Kennedy Center Honor - and I couldn’t be happier for her. In fact, when I heard the news, I reacted almost the same way as Linda said she did when she saw Aretha Franklin perform at Carole King’s Kennedy Center Honor: I levitated. Gotta love Linda for that perfect description.
I’m also thrilled for the wonderful Sally Field, whose autobiography “In Pieces” I just finished a few weeks ago. In the book she mentions one of her first post-Gidget/post-Flying Nun movie projects - “Maybe I’ll Come Home In The Spring” - featuring the music of “newcomer Linda Ronstadt.” Years ago people used to mention Sally as a good casting choice if a movie was ever made about Linda’s life. I wonder if their paths ever crossed over the years. Anyway, I can’t wait to watch the ceremony on TV in December. In the meantime, I hope we can keep Trump and politics out of the discussion. After all, it’s the Kennedy Center Honors and has nothing to do with the current occupant of the White House.

I would like to see mega-fan Trisha Yearwood be one to do the honors; but evidently the ceremony on December 8th would conflict with a concert date she has down in Naples, Florida. Still, there are quite a few female artists who could do an extremely credible job of honoring Linda in all of her various musical endeavors, including of course the Usual Suspects (Dolly; Emmylou; Bonnie Raitt, etc.).

So the format is to pick some songs that defined the artist and then match them to anybody? How about Phillip Glass doing something by Nelson Riddle with Bette Midler?
Who would levitate Linda? Maybe Sia? Doing Winter Light? Prisoner In Disguise? Country Rock like When Will I Be Loved? I think Sia would do it for Linda.

I am wondering if they’ll have Emmy and Dolly perform one of the Trio numbers. Perhaps Trisha Yearwood. And then it’s possible they might go with any of the performers from her RRHOF induction — Carrie Underwood, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt. They might bring a mariachi band out and perhaps have Gaby Moreno sing. I am sometimes disappointed with who comes out for some artists. But sometimes they really do match up the performers well with who is being honored. Maybe Don Henley will do “Desperado.” Be great if the ending of Linda’s section had all of those performers sing together on one of her classic songs.

As I said in my previous post, unless Trisha can re-jig her schedule, I don't think she can show up for the honors to pay tribute to Linda.
However, I do think they can still get other quite worthwhile folks from her own circle of fans and from the fan base she still has in the industry. It would just be an unbelievably large group of them, given the scope of Linda's career.

Sia would be great, and Trisha perhaps performing a Trio number with Dolly & Emmy. Need someone to go a Spanish number and def something from the American songbook ....

They've done it once before , that I know of . George Jones' album The Bradley Barn Sessions on the song Where Grass Won't Grow. Alison Krauss would be a good choice to honor Linda, and maybe someone unexpected like Neko Case or Ann Hampton Calloway. Gaby Moreno would be great or Lila Downs.

Sarah Brightman singing Winter Light (in the nude) might capture imaginations.
I think it would be nice to have a star of Sarah's stature singing a Linda Ronstadt written original. She is already familiar and did a superb job recording it.

Personally, I hope Sheryl Crowe is not involved. Although she appears to be the go-to for Linda doings, I don't think her voice is that much akin to Linda's to evoke anything about it.
Recently I read two interviews with Crowe, one in the Chicago Tribune not long after her performance at the documentary showing. In both, when asked about her influences, she named an extensive list that included just about everyone BUT Linda. She's allegedly named Linda in the past (right?), but you'd think after her several Linda-related performances Linda would be in the forefront of that list.
Maybe it's just me, but I find Crowe an uninteresting singer.

I'd love to hear Adele covering some of Linda's songs. Her voice is amazing and every cover that she's done is better than the original. She said that she likes Dolly and became a fan of American country music during her second tour, so she's probably aware of Linda's songs.

Can anyone name a cover of a Linda Ronstadt song that EQUALS or BESTS Ronstadt's version? Or in the least does a decent job at it?
Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You is one. Barbra Streisand's Stoney End is another. The Dirt Band's Some of Shelly's Blues. Sarah Brightman's Winter Light.
There are none that were hits for Linda that even come close in my opinion. I realize that it can be hard to compare when the same song is done in a different genre or style. This is not an easy exercise. Even on wikipedia type reference sites the "Linda Ronstadt version" is often cited alongside the original performance. I think that speaks volumes.

Canadian singer Terri Clark sang Poor Poor Pitiful Me in 1996, it was pretty good. I didn't find Whitney's version of I will always love you better than Linda's. I found she was showing off and it lacked the emotion of Linda's version. Anne Murray sang Just One Look in 1974 but it was just okay. Van Halen sang You're No Good in 1979, it was good if you like heavier rock.

Quote by Richard W:
I think Sheryl wrote in Rolling Stone fifteen years ago about Linda, how her vocal dexterity helped make it possible for her to be able to sing everything from Hank Williams to the Rolling Stones, sometimes in the same concerts; and how the control of her own image helped make it easier for other female singers to do the same. Sheryl may not be on the level of Linda as a singer (but how many are?), but I thought she was more than a little adequate.
Going further with who should honor Linda at the Kennedy Center, we can certainly think of tons of people who would be most appropriate for it if they were able to do it. I hope Trisha re-jigs her schedule to do it, since, in her own words, she has talked about Linda so much that maybe Linda ought to take out a restraining order (she was joking, of course; and Linda would likely find that amusing).
One who I think would be inappropriate, however, would be Miranda Lambert. And I say this because, while many people might want to point out that she has done "Willin'" in her concerts, it seems to me that she only did it after Linda went public with her Parkinson's condition in August 2013. Besides that, can anyone cite a single interview she has given where she even mentioned Linda once as an influence? I can't.

No offense to any artists but I think they need a "heavy hitter" or two to honor Linda i.e. Aretha Franklin honoring Carole King performing You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman. That's why I suggest Sia, Sarah Brightman (who performed a Linda penned song) and even Annie Lennox (whom Linda greatly admires and can make a song her own). I also like Fab's idea of the Trio adding Trisha or Alison Krauss with Allison taking the lead on a song Linda led on...perhaps Women 'Cross The River. (oh how I love that song)

I don't doubt that we need the heavy hitters for this tribute; but it isn't necessary to overload on them either. Robert would probably agree with me on this, that this female artist, whom we've been yakking about now for seventeen years, would be right:

All good choices.... I'm not sure how this works and how the artists are chosen to do the tribute... For Linda's Tribute, I'd also like to see K.D. Lang, Jennifer Warnes, Dixie Chicks and for more contemporary, Kasey Musgraves.. I'm sure there are more but I'm not too familiar with the more pop contemporary singers.

Don Henley. Aaron Neville & Jackson Browne. Because you know what? Watching Carrie, Emmy, Bonnie, Sheryl and Stevie just didn’t do it for me. And I actually like them all. But They needed that many admirable legends singing together to attempt a composite Ronstadt. And it fell short IMO. Doing an all male supergroup would not invite the same level of unfortunate comparison. Henley singing Blue Bayou is absolutely right. He sang on hers in the first place. Aaron singing Ooh Baby Baby and Jackson doing Poor Poor Pitiful Me. It would be perfect. Add in Placido Domingo and Danny Valdez and call it a night. My 2 cents.

Another one worth considering is Lindi Ortega, whose 2018 album Liberty is informed by the mythos of the American Southwest and northern Mexico, even though she is Canadian (but with Mexican lineage, courtesy of her father):
