Homemade clip from the documentary. I recall watching this when it aired on tv. I had been trying to find it for years but for some reason it wasn't posted online along with most of Cavett's other shows. There is a lot more to this interview with Cavett. Love the Virginia Slims symbolism.

Linda Ronstadt Sings Ballad in 2019
vSpirit2 9.9K subscribers "Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice" heartbreaking scene of Linda Ronstadt surrounded by family, quietly singing a sad Mexican ballad (w/English lyrics) with nephew Peter Ronstadt and cousin Bobby Ronstadt.
To fans who never thought they'd hear her sing again, it's a deeply emotional moment. And it doesn't sound a thing like Linda Ronstadt. But it's beautiful to witness all the same.
"This isn't really singing," Ronstadt says. "Believe me. It's a few notes sketched in. But it's not really singing."
Asked if she's enjoying it, she smiles and says, "Well, I would enjoy it much more if I could sing. But I can't let them sing this without me. It's a family thing."
She laughs. Then they go back to singing their sad song about having no mother or father. When it's over, Ronstadt laughs and asks, "Do we get to eat?"

Linda never liked "labels" whether in her personal or professional life. She never considered herself a country singer. More like a singer who liked to sing Country, Bluegrass, Folk, Rock, etc. and was influenced by all of them. Some recordings emphasized certain aspects of those styles more than others and she let the music business decide what fits...sometimes confounding them as evidenced by the different charts the same song found itself on. Expect the unexpected with Linda.

Perhaps Linda prefers to remember it that way, since it sounds more romantic that Gilbert was serenading Ruthmary. Either way, it speaks volumes about his character and the type of relationship that they had. I'm sorry that Ruthmary wasn't able to fulfill her ambition about becoming a scientist, but she did have a full life raising her family in Tucson. She was ahead of her time in advising Linda that having a successful career was just as important as getting married. Parents sometimes embellish (or maybe all the time) to their kids. My guess is Linda's romantic version came from her dad. No big deal. Makes a better remembrance and is sweet. I wish I knew the rest of that story though lol of how she snagged Gilbert or he snagged her. I was hoping for some flashes of a home video from the 50's or 60's. So much has been left out and it was still lengthy. Gotta give a lot of credit to editors and editing to keep things tight. I am confident that this and events surrounding Linda this year have cemented her "legend" status for the ages.
The way her music has appeared on today's charts has to have me thinking had Linda started her career more recently she would have skyrocketed past even the greatest of the popular artists we currently have.

I know I am just quibbling but there are some inaccuracies in the film. Some chronological quirks with the video and a comment Linda made that I know to be not quite true even though it was also printed in the Rolling Stone Heartbreak On Wheels article back in the 1970's. I asked Ruth Mary if the story of Gilbert riding his horse and serenading her under the window of her sorority house was true. She said yes and no. The person he was serenading was her sorority sister, not her. As far as I am concerned Gilbert ended up with the right woman. Not just for him but for ALL of us. She was a wonderful force of nature herself and people still get a bit verklempt just talking about her and Gilbert. If you want to know how and why Linda was so grounded you don't have to go very far.

Now that youtube seems to figure high in Billboard's lists maybe they should rerelease some of Linda's videos or make some new ones from old footage. Lose Again figured quite prominently in the documentary. Perhaps that should be the one?

The song was definitely Different Drum ... and it was amazing to us 12 or 13 year olds at the sleep-over!! I'm just trying to figure out which TV show we were watching Carson took over for Allen so it was either Carson or Bishop. They probably sang the same song on both is my guess. If you had a sleep over you might want to ask your sleep over friends.

I just watched the LR documentary show on TV the other night, & it brought back memories of a sleep-over at a friend's house when I was in Junior High School. On the TV that night was Linda Ronstadt & the Stone Poneys playing Different Drum. I was sooo impressed!!! Not sure now whether it was Joey Bishop Show in 1967 or Johnny Carson or Steve Allen in 1968. Does anyone know what song they played on each of those shows? If it was 1968 it was probably Different Drum or High Muddy Water. High Muddy Water was the Ronstadt song she sang on It's Happening (1968) that did it for me. I was in love at 14.
Then again, Some of Shelly's Blues was also released as a single that year I believe.
Linda's friends in The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band then took it and had a good hit with it later on (1971 Top 100).

The documentary and then the Kennedy Center Honors was like a ONE TWO marketing push. I hope Linda makes some money out of all this but I don't know how that works these days. Seems like a whole new music paradigm is upon us. Even Billboard is changing the way it reconciles its charts.

MUSIC NEWSHere Comes YouTube: 'Billboard' To Change How It Calculates Top AlbumsJanuary 2, 20204:46 PM ET www.npr.org/2020/01/02/793134365/here-comes-youtube-billboard-to-change-how-it-calculates-top-albums Heard on All Things Considered AILSA CHANG DAVE BLANCHARD

Billboard chart analyst Chris Molanphy cites Taylor Swift as an artist who effectively differentiates between albums with the help of her video aesthetics. Emma McIntyre/Getty Images
The question of how Billboard determines the most popular music in the country has gotten a lot harder in the digital age. It used to be a simple question of which album sold the most physical copies, but now Billboard needs to consider things like Spotify plays and mp3 downloads. Starting Jan. 3, it will also include YouTube streams.
NPR's Ailsa Chang talks to Chris Molanphy, a chart analyst and pop critic at Slate, about the significance of this change. Listen at the audio link and read on for an edited version of their conversation.
Why is Billboard making this change?
It's part of a long-term evolution of the album chart away from pure sales to a consumption model. Now, rather than simple tracking you at the moment you buy an album, they're tracking how much you're consuming an album in the weeks to come.
How big of a deal is YouTube in the music industry?
Depending on the audience, it may account for up to half of the consumption of any given genre ... hip-hop is very strong on YouTube, Latin music is very strong on YouTube. If you're going to get a full and accurate representation of the way music is being consumed — not just at the song level, but at the full-artist level, which is what the album chart aims to measure — you kind of eventually need to bake YouTube into the album chart.
If YouTube is going to be such an important component of measuring where you're going to land on the Billboard charts, how might this reshape the way music is marketed?
I can see as scenario where an artist might want to do multiple versions — official versions — of a video: just when an album is starting to flag a little on the chart, you put out a new version of a video and that gives it a new boost of life.
Albums are not so much totemic objects anymore, they're kind of like marketing campaigns. When an artist moves from period to period in their career, they are moving from — say, if you're Taylor Swift, the Reputation period to the Lover period — you are trying to aggregate as much attention for that project while it's your current album project.
This YouTube rule just sort of aggregates one more stream of data to add to Spotify, to add to Apple Music, to add to the download that tells people "This album is being consumed and commanding the culture."
So it seems like, in a lot of ways, this Billboard rule change is just a reflection of how differently people are consuming music these days.
Most folks are not walking into physical record stores anymore, many people are not even downloading the iTunes way anymore. Streaming is the future --it has been the future for a long time. YouTube an important component of that and this is just Billboard doing what it's always done: it reflects the way people are actually consuming music, dating back to the era of 45 rpm singles all the way to the present day.
