Just received my LP and CD of Simple Dreams 40th Anniversary. I have played the LP once through and it sounds great. The little disk with the bonus material is more of a bonus than I thought.

I haven't opened the LP yet. I'm going to rip the CD to my media server and enjoy listening to that. Should I open the LP? Is it a treat for the eyes as well as the ears?
There have been many compliments over the years on the cover for this album but I've never liked it. I don't like the graininess- I would have preferred a sharply detailed image.

The sound is greatly improved on the LP now that it has been remastered on 180g Vinyl. I also hear a big improvement on the CD. As far as the repackaging, exactly the same as before with added credits on the re-release and a paragraph of comments by Peter Asher. Worth the money if you already have Simple Dreams? If you are replacing an old LP, well worth the money. The CD? Depends on how good your system is, you might not notice much difference. I kick myself for buying these re-releases of albums that are already in my collection, but when it comes to Linda Ronstadt, I can't keep myself from buying repeats. As for the live cuts, personally, I would like to have three songs recorded on the Simple Dreams Tour. The three included are from the Mad Love Tour.

I have been playing the re-issue in my car. While I played “Simple Dreams” over and over and over in my college days in the late 1970s, and often in the intervening years, I feel like I am reacquainting myself with an old friend again. I just bought a new car (my first in 27 years) and it has a six-speaker sound system. The mix sounds great to my ears. The only thing is on “Blue Bayou” when the steel drum or marimbas kick in, they’re very prominent in my side speakers and it makes me think my doors are rattling (they are not). What also comes to mind is — once again — Linda’s integrity as an artist. Yes, she has the crowd-pleasers like “It’s So Easy” and “Tumbling Dice,” but she includes “Old Paint,” which actually had me in tears yesterday. It’s such a beautiful song and Linda sings it gorgeously but the fact that she included this on a “pop” album at the height of her pop music popularity shows how important these traditional songs are to her. I enjoy the live cuts. They’ve edited well as those songs are not consecutive in the HBO concert. Because these three songs are also on the studio album I thought they could have including the live “Tumbling Dice,” which appears on Linda’s box set. I might make a Disc with that included.

i bought it yesterday. yet to play. so far disappointed by the booklet ... nice enough i guess was good enough ...careless typos like 'palate' i presume peter asher meant palette? mispelling john david souther as wouther! nit picking but impresses this was a rush job including 3 live tracks that are easily sourced via other platforms

Quote by rick re. "Old Paint":
And the fact that it is a traditional folk song of the Old West means a lot as well, since she is a child of the West herself. It is as endemic to her own upbringing and experience as any folk or folk-influenced song she ever did (IMHO).

I got my pkg yesterday. SD does seem to be louder which is good. I have not read liner yet. 2 typos, man, that just wrong. It should be gone over by more than one set of eyes to discover errors. It is scary how bad some people spell. Happy to get my new copy of DCN. Great album!!!!! eddiejinnj

Was there a separate booklet with Peter's comments? My copy which I just received from Amazon, there is no booklet. WTF??

Post by eddiejinnj on Sept 25, 2017 15:21:07 GMT -5
Well it not a separate booklet just by Peter. Inside the left cover is a book with Linda's orchid pic on cover and it has a one page into by peter and the rest of booklet is the info on the inside of the original album cover. You didn't get any booklet? If so, I would call Amazon (though what a pain). These companies that sell volume don't seem to care if they inconvenience their customers. eddiejinnj
PS: As far as typos in book, I do see the palate grammar/spelling mistake. I do not see JD's name spelled wrong. Two places I saw his name spelled correctly were once in Peter's page and then on the songwriting credit for" SM,SD".

No, unfortunately I did not receive any booklet. I have the sleeve with Linda's orchid pic on one side and the lyrics on the other side, just like the original album, but no book

Maybe they put an old sleeve in the new edition. Again, for you that is wrong to do to you. Your cd is the new version with the 3 live cuts at the end correct? They didn't just send you an original issue cd did they? Did you buy the vinyl version? eddiejinnj

Oh, well they might not have a booklet as the reason for the booklet in cds is to mainly list the credits for an album, etc since it is smaller than the inner sleeve of vinyl. This is the same quote booklet as in the original edition release other than a one page commentary by Peter. They might have left that out of the vinyl version. You probably have the original record sleeve that album always had with the orchid pic and the credentials on the back. Any other buyers of the "NEW" vinyl know for suzannes? eddiejinnj

I have the vinyl. No commentary by Peter. The 7' inch record with the bonus tracks is neat.

If I know Linda, that will drive her crazy! If I know our Linda, based on her past comments, she's not likely to look at the reissue at all. Recall an interview in Goldmine, that when her son was looking at a copy of Rhino's first compilation on Linda that they had sent to her, it was unopened. She wasn't interested, although her son was. Still, she seems to have mellowed over the years about her recordings. Loved that live about Eric Kaz should've given Bette Midler his song to sing but then she thought, "Hell no! I'll do it myself!" And she did, singing it better than Bette ever could've sung it. (No offense to any Bette fans, I like her too but Linda is and always will be my number one.)

Just got around to posting a review on Amazon for this album. I was a little morning groggy. I could have gone more into each song but I think it still can be helpful to others. eddiejinnj

It debuted at number 16 on the Billboard Country Catalog chart. It's also 16 on the British Country artists chart.

So the number 16 on the British Country chart is like being that number on Billboard's Country Album Chart? The catalog lists are for pre-released material and in this case not the same as the Billboard Country Album charts for current top selling releases. They basically created the catalog lists for albums like Pink Floyd's DSOM; albums that sell pretty well all the time. That is great to see UK appreciation. eddiejinnj
PS: If people get time and can give reviews from wherever they bought it from that would be great. It took me some time to get around to it myself.

I did easily find the UK Country Chart. That is great that Linda getting exposure there. She debuted at 18 then the latest is 16. Way cool. I couldn't find the Billboard Country Catalog chart but you might have to subscribe to see that. Not sure. eddiejinnj

The 40th anniversary re-issue has fallen out of the top 20 on both the British Country Artists and Billboard Country Catalog charts this week. On the British Country Compilation chart this week The Complete Trio is holding at number 2 and Linda's Original Album Series moved up 1 to number 12.

Finally ordered the 40th anniversary edition from Amazon. Better late than never but I bet I'm close to the last one of our group to do so. Never do today what can be put off until tomorrow. I also ordered another copy of "Winter Light" seems I wore out the last one. Looking forward to seeing (or hearing) how it sounds. Also really curious about the inclusion or lack thereof of additional material.

The cd I have has the booklet in the left sleeve like an album and it has her orchid pic on front then on inside cover is the pic on the steamer trunk then a green background page with peter's comments/narrative. The next page and on are the credits for the songs that were originally on the back of vinyl album inner sleeve back. So you got no booklet at all or just one with the credits for each song and you saying that the first page of text there is no peter commentary? I am just belaboring this because maybe those that didn't could be collector's items. Just wondering how this happened. Did they just put in a traditional copy of the cd booklet in the new ones. Bummer that you have to open cd to find out this mistake as the only time they mention it is the 40th anniversary re-mastered edition is on a sticker on the outer wrap which is removed to open cd. I hope this all makes sense. eddiejinnj

Just look above and one can see that eyes are the mirrors of our souls. Love those big brown eyes. Thanks Tony, so much for posting the pics. That is so much better than having me try to describe the pkg. If somebody has something different than this cd above tell us about it. I got exactly what is pictured above. eddiejinnj
