Are there two different versions of "In My Hour of Darkness," Rick? Jay, I only have Emmylou's "Portraits," so not 100% sure. I did go to Amazon to listen to the MP3s of the song from both "Portraits" and Gram's "Grievous Angel" and it sounds like the same track/version to my ears. Thanks, Rick.

Am in the Starbucks in Rolling Hills, CA. Walked in to hear "Walk Away Renee" by Linda and Ann Savoy. Then, "Blue Bayou." Then "Ooh Baby Baby." And now "Gentle Annie," which was on Linda's Box Set.

"Gentle Annie"—!
Where are they getting these from?
You definitely get the WTF Award, Rick, for the most obscure Ronstadt track heard in public!

Before I left Starbucks today, the last two songs they played were "Piel Canela" and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me."

like all of us to some degree, we don't understand the almost monopoly of linda music in starbucks now. is that their style that they issue one collection at a time and play it to death to promote and when their next one comes out the new opus artist gets most of the play? eddiejinnj

But here is what I will say. I have purchased CDs at Starbucks before. I normally don't stay at the store long -- I get my coffee and leave. A lot of times, the CDs are "mix" or compilation CDs. Starbucks normally does at least one, if not more, Christmas CDs each year. I have a few of those. And it may range from a song by Ella Fitzgerald to a modern take on a Yuletide song by Goldfrapp. Very eclectic stuff. If I am in a supermarket at Christmastime, and all of a sudden, Linda's version of Joni Mitchell's "River" is played in the store, I PAY ATTENTION. If I am in a store, and all of a sudden "Heartbeats Accelerating" or "When We Ran" etc. comes on -- and they do -- I PAY ATTENTION. I think for me, most music in stores sort of becomes white noise to my ears. But when I hear Linda's voice, I am akin to a dog who can only hear certain frequencies and my ears automatically hone in on Linda's voice. There are very few people for whom that is true. As for your main question.... I am guessing that the time will come when Starbucks will move on to the next programming it has planned. I noticed a British Folk CD at Starbucks today. Didn't hear anything off of that. There was also a CD called "The Cocktail Hour." I had purchased that some time ago. It is a compilation CD. As Richard said, it is as if one has entered into some kind of alternative universe. But a good one. I will enjoy it while it lasts.

There is a Starbuck's located inside of the Kroger Supermarket on Hilton Head Island. I do not normally shop there, but I will go in occasionally to pick up an item or two as it is conveniently located near my home. The past three times that I've gone into the market, I've heard Linda's voice coming from the Starbuck's Coffee area (it's sort of a little side area near the front of the store with its' own entrance). Of course, I would linger around so that I could hear her...it still gives me a thrill to hear her voice in a public area, and more often than not, I will see and/or hear somebody whistling or humming or even singing along with Linda. I'm not sure why I enjoy that so much. I guess that it's sort of cool to realize that she still impresses people with her music and that I'm not her only fan, LOL!

Though you can just buy the CD, you might want to get a non-coffee item -- San Pellegrino and lemon pound cake? -- and sit for awhile in Starbucks, as the experience of listening to Linda (not limited to the tracks on the CD) and her different songwriters in public, is one hell of a lot of fun.

As someone who works at home, I often go to Starbucks—my "satellite" office—for a change of venue. As Rick said, most of their CDs are compilations, so I don't often hear a single artist played more than once or twice (depending on the CD) in a hour and a half. And, since I often go there at about the same time each day, I can almost always predict what songs I'm going to hear. I wouldn't say they play a collection to death, but the programming can make it seem so. (I remember a certain time when a Sarah McLaughlin CD would send me running from the shop, so often did I hear a certain song from it.)
So, to hear nothing but Linda's music (and music related to her that is NOT on a for-purchase CD) for that entire time is exceptional, even though I have no explanation for it.
The Starbucks I frequent also has Maroon 5's new CD, "V", but I've yet to hear anything from it. So, whoever is programming the music for Starbucks must be a fan of Linda's. Perhaps the man behind the Opus collection, Steven Stolder, holds that position for now, and many of the non-Opus songs we are hearing are a result of his having delved into her catalog to cull the selections he made on the CD.
It's still weird (read: great!), though, that they would play songs not on the Opus CD.

I am loving it, too. I sat in Starbucks for two hours today, I think, and not one song repeated. I have never heard Linda in public like this. I can't say whether I've heard other artists in this concentration, but I don't like other artists as much as I do Linda.

You came to the right place!
I'm hoping that someone associated with the Starbucks Linda blitz might happen to come by here and take pity on us and help solve this mystery. For surely a mystery it is, as unprecedented as it is.

I haven't listened to radio except classical and hipster/PBS stations since the 1970s. There's no reason to abuse myself that way. Still, you can't completely get away from it in public.

I wasn't expecting this to have a huge sales impact-- after all, it is another collection of songs that are already available-- but I am told that this will chart on the Billboard album charts at a very respectable #65 for the week ending 9-27-2014.

As I said previously, I would have chosen some different tracks, but then we all could, right? As it is, this is a great collection that really shows off Linda's voice in all of its colors. ("How Do I Make You" and/or "Hurt So Bad" would have added some real rock punch here, but I suspect those two tracks aren't exactly "coffee house" appropriate.)
Also, having played the CD several times, I've come to appreciate some songs that I tend to neglect. There's something about hearing a certain song out of context of the album it came from that makes it sound fresher to the ear. Case in point: "Piel Canela." In the context of Frenesi, it was never a favorite; it wasn't a must-skip, but I loved so many of the other songs on that album more. Hearing it here, I've come to like it more, standing alone as it does on the CD.
But still, my favorite track is "Cry Like a Rainstorm." I don't know if it was remastered (whatever that really means) or if it's my new Sony sound bar, but man, that song sounds fabulous. And as the kickoff track, you couldn't ask for a more delicious Ronstadt vocal, and all the pop grandeur of the arrangement is just overwhelming (the choir sends chills). In fact, I've become newly obsessed with this song and can't get enough of it. It's as if I finally understand everything she and Asher were attempting, the musical, melodic equivalent of an emotional storm.
As a PS I'll add that I've always loved Raitt's version, too, but we're talking apples and oranges here. They both do the song more than justice in their own ways.

As I said, hearing it out of context of the album it really hit me how much fun that song is. It makes me want to be at the Tropicana at a stage-side table enjoying a cocktail and some dancing.
