Well, they pulled songs from Frenesi, Adieu False Heart, and Humming to Myself (not necessarily the ones I would have picked, but since no one asked me...) so that's great.

While this collection is an interesting one, does anyone here besides me think it more than just a little depressing that it's easier to hear Linda at a Starbucks than it is to hear her on the radio?

I'm just pleased that she's being heard!

where is the page with the 70's through 90's cd collections. am on amazon and am thinking of getting the 2 cd set that erik has a review of. also, they have the collection with the 70's albums but I thought the one that somebody put up that showed the collections by decade had don't cry now on it (all the asylum albums). the one I see on amazon now has pid through mad love no don't cry now. eddiejinnj

I just bought one at the Starbuck's in Chicago. It was evidently put on display yesterday.
Haven't had a chance to give it the eye yet.

A really beautiful, thoughtful package, all told, with the graphics/photos/text all done in tones of plum and shades of gold and orange.
There's an accompanying 12-page booklet with six photos (at least one of which I don't believe I've seen) showing Linda to great advantage from her early '70s fiddling days through a Mad Love-era concert photo.
There's an excellent, insightful biography included in the booklet by Steven Stolder, that is current right up through her Parkinson's diagnosis and her memoir. The concluding line, referring to the memoir, states "it [the memoir] reflects a woman who refused to be constrained by established motives and boundaries, and who made singing her life's work." Classy.
But the best, and most unusual, thing is that each song gets its own "biography," giving details about the writer, the song's history, the album it came from, and Linda's relationship with that song. For example, regarding Blue Bayou, the author says it was:
"Ronstadt's choice for the first single from her 1977 album Simple Dreams, overriding the misgivings of her manager, Peter Asher. Asher hedged their bets and had another single set to go if Blue Bayou fell short of expectations. Ronstadt was right, however, and Blue Bayou climbed to No. 3."
I never knew (or completely forgot!) that it was Linda who chose that song for the album's first single.
At any rate, this is perhaps the best put-together package of Linda's music I've seen. Just beautiful. The whole thing was spearheaded by Steven Stolder (who also wrote all of the liner notes) so I would like to congratulate him on a sterling job.
As a footnote, Stolder thanks, among others, someone we would recognize: John Boylan.

Quote by Richard W:
And the truth is that both Linda and Peter were right. Not only did "Blue Bayou" reach #3, but the song that they had in reserve and eventually did release anyway, "It's So Easy", reached #5 at the same time, in December 1977. No female singer had ever managed to place two songs inside the Top Five at once before Linda; and indeed, the last time anyone had done it before Linda was in April 1964, when the Beatles owned the entire Top Five.

It is rather odd that the Opus Collection is not advertised, spotlighted or mentioned at all on either the Starbucks site or Rhino Records. I mean, you'd think it would be since it is already available.

It wasn't that she had two songs in the top 5 it was that they were both with a bullet/rising. Many have had one in that was falling and a new one rising but that isn't what caused the stir. Both rising (with a star) was the thing.

Quote by Goldie:
And just for more arcane chart matters, there were only two things keeping "Blue Bayou" from becoming Linda's second #1 hit. One was the fact that Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" held down the penthouse for ten straight weeks. The other was the song that knocked it out of there: "How Deep Is Your Love?", by the Bee Gees.

The same thing happened earlier with When Will I Be Loved which was kept from the #1 position by Love Will Keep Us Together which was the smash song of the year by Captain and Tenille. (now divorced) I noticed the Linda Ronstadt Opus Collection on YouTube which looks like a gathering of the songs. It adds up to a nice mix.

Blue Bayou may well have been a Billboard #1 song but it was robbed of that position because of the holidays. Legend has it that it would have been #1 the last week of the year for 1977, but Billboard did not publish an issue that week. It was #3 the week before.

just got my copy today at Starbucks in Minneapolis. love it... Had fun talking to the cashier . she looked about 18 years old. when I checked out she said " which one is this oh Linda Ronstadt, never heard of her. " So the cashier started asking me questions about her and I found myself giving her a mini lecture on Linda Ronstadt music. she seemed really interested and said she would have to listen to it.. I highly recommended that she do that. great cd and I really enjoy all the write-up in the included booklet

The first three songs have great sonic quality and her voice is clear, powerful, and sparkling (80s-90s after Pirates/LaBoheme was perhaps her best voice). Then the 70s songs come on, which seem muddy and make her voice sound less than stellar. Back to 80s-00s, then 70s and the same thing (back and forth). The later songs (Nelson, Mexican/Cuban, and beyond) sound great - the 70s not so much. Anyone else hear the same thing? You think with the audiophile releases on vinyl and CD of her 70s work, they would have found better recordings from more original sources. I know she didn't like her 70s voice as much, but I don't remember it being "as bad" (relative to later work) as this recording makes it sound.
I also agree that at least a couple of her photos are never been seen before (by me anyway) shots from familiar photo shoots. I am going to re-listen tonight and re-read the liner notes.

Just bought the last one at the Starbucks in Torrance at Pacific Coast Highway and Crenshaw. Am hoping if this sells well that there might be a second volume. Perhaps with a previously unreleased track. Starbucks does that sometimes.

I, too, was struck by the "great sonic quality" on the first three songs. "Cry Like a Rainstorm" never sounded so good. You can actually hear the room where it was recorded. Breathtaking, really.
I was also struck by how gorgeous Linda and Dolly sounded on "Lover's Return." I don't think I've ever heard their voices sound quite like they do here.
As for the "muddy" '70s material, I hadn't noticed a significant drop in sonic quality. In fact, "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" sounds noticiably great. But I'll give a closer listen.
I have to give Kudos to Steven Stolder's sequencing "Cry Like a Rainstorm" as the opening track. It's always been one of my favorite Ronstadt songs, but here, out of context of the album, it is a stunner. Everything you love about Linda's voice comes through on this one, and, as mentioned, the sonic quality really tingles when the chorus rises and the guitar wails. Jeepers.

I live in Canada and I checked out two Starbucks and no Linda CD. I've looked on Amazon and don't see it there like somebody above mentioned. It's disappointing that this CD is going to be hard to get here. I really don't want to resort to those ebay bloodsuckers!

And do you have to get what's on their menu to get the CD? Because I've only ever been into a Starbuck's once to have one of their coffees. I can't remember which kind I chose, but my throat d***ed near burned up having it!
