Yes, it was the Cat Stevens special Midnight Special. No, it was ABC-TV's Friday night Rock Concert, which was produced by Don Kirshner. After ABC canceled the series, Kirshner took the show to syndication but called it Don Kirshner'sRock Concert instead. I think that was because"Rock Concert" was copyrighted as an ABC program. Kirshner adding his name made it a different show, even though it was the same show, although it also added Kirshner's opening narrations. The series differed from the Midnight Special in that the artists were filmed in concert. I believe it started in 1972 after the Midnight Special pilot aired, which was to encourage the 18 year olds to register to vote. Linda also performed another Cat Stevens song, I believe, titled "A Star and a Stone." Each Rock Concert show was 90 minutes long, same as the Midnight Special. I also believe the show also featured only portions of a concert rather than a full blown concert by any one artist. And I'm not real sure, but I don't believe the original RC (or even DKRC) is available on dvd, which is a pity.

I posted a similar one here a while back:

How was I wrong lol? I said that it was Cat Stevens special that aired prime time on abc. There is nothing incorrect in that statement. She does do a great job on there. She probably was very nervous but she put her all into it. Superb vocals and endearing behavior. eddiejinnj

I always remember the series starting at 10:30 after the local news. Could it have been ABC left it up to the local stations on what time they aired the show? Or maybe the station you watched the program had a delayed broadcast for some reason?

Or maybe the station you watched the program had a delayed broadcast for some reason? Not that it is any big deal but you all got parts of it right. I never thought about the prime time comment and I suppose prime time means different things to different areas. I saw it in Kentucky whose prime time is 7 to 10 pm where New York our prime time is 8 to 11 pm. In KY it came on at 10:30 pm and in NY it came on at 11:30 pm which was the regular time slot of the ABC IN CONCERT series. The really great thing for me seeing it in Kentucky was that they have most of their stations on the earlier zone but I was able to pick up another station in a different zone with an hour difference so I got to see it TWICE the night it originally aired. This was mostly before VCRs came on the scene so it was a difficult concert to find copies of. I had an audio copy that I taped but didn't ever see a video copy again until Julian P. showed up with The First Cut on youtube and I told him about this FORUM. I miss his postings here as he had quite a different perspective. He was kind enough to oblige me and post Fill MY Eyes soon after. I was terribly disappointed that Linda never released these songs as Fill My Eyes could have been a Country Rock hit for sure and The First Cut a Top 40. That one concert showed more than anything the great possibilities of Linda's talent as up until then she was mostly considered a "countryish" type of singer. To me this one concert was her Turning Point and many, many people took notice of her afterwards that might not have. I think it set the stage for Heart Like A Wheel's success very nicely. It also introduced her to a lot of Europeans who tuned in to watch their favorite son Cat Stevens and got a real treat finding Linda in the chocolate box.

My apologies for not being accurate that it was a prime-time special for Cat. I thought we established that but I should have read slide's Aug 19 post in more detail. Wasn't the Midnight Special on NBC though? So this is the syndication being referred to? eddiejinnj
PS: The Midnight Special was on NBC 12:30am until 2am from 1972 (Linda was on the first episode with John Denver hosting if I'm correct) until 1981.

No, not the syndicated show. I had the title of the show wrong that aired on ABC, which was "In Concert" and which was the show that aired the special concert on Cat Stevens. The Midnight Special was on NBC, right, not ABC, but I didn't say which network it was on. Shoulda been clear on that. Don Kirshner did produce In Concert but had no connection to the show after the second episode other than a production credit. Don Kirshner's Rock Concert began on September 27, 1973. In the Central time zone, the Midnight Special aired precisely at midnight following Johnny Carson, whose then was still 90 minutes. When Carson cut back to one hour, that's when the show moved back to the 12:30 a.m. - 2 a.m. (Eastern time) time slot. The pilot aired on August 19, 1972 and the series debuted properly on February 2, 1973. And you're right that John Denver hosted the first Midnight Special, which featured Linda amongst other guests. My memory, such as it is, is that Linda performed three songs, all live: "The Fast One," "Long, Long Time" and I still believe the debut show featured her first performance of "You're No Good," although it might have been "Silver Threads and Golden Needles."

I just had to do it. My apologies if my editing wasn't approved of. I just love his avatar and remember in that Muppets scene Linda singing the best version of "When I Grow to Old to Dream" she says (and I agree) she ever did. She seemed so comforting with Kermie. I don't recall the ABC show. I always remember "The Midnight Special" and DK's "Rock Concert". eddiejinnj

Other than Miss Piggy and Linda, who can claim to have Kermit the Frog as a boyfriend.

Was she the only one that Kermit wanted other than Miss Piggy? My mom liked the Muppet Show. I know Miss Piggy gets jealous but it seems that Linda was the only one Kermit said was his gf other than MP? Is this true? I don't know the plot of many of the episodes. thanks. Not doubting the guest; just not sure he/she is making a definitive statement or not. It is just that even if Linda was not the only one the list would be pretty short. eddiejinnj

eddiejinnj, your edit to my post was perfect. I remember waking up with my TV on in my room to the promo for the Muppet Show. I awoke just as it was ending and I must have been somewhat awake for all of it cause I came to thinking it was all a dream. I made sure to turn in that Saturday night to see if it was all just a dream. What a gift that was. It was my compensation for having to go to bed early all those years while my older sibling got to stay up for In Concert, Don K's and Saturday Night Live. My parents did order HBO/Cinemax just so I could see the Mad Love Concert. That was a real treat.

Speaking of behind prison walls, what holding cell was that photo of Linda taken in? I mean, look at the floor, to say nothing of that table and chair. Looks like an abandoned school room in the Ukraine.
Linda looks absolutely adorable.

That's John Stewart to her right, correct? Would like to know where this is from. Dating it by her hair length, which is like dating a tree by its rings, lol; I would say this is 1981- 1982. eddiejinnj

Another nice pic on Ebay: ausfan2 how did you manage to get rid of the watermark on the ebay photos? I posted the same one but could only find it with the ad plastered across the photo. (see bottom of thread ronstadt.proboards.com/thread/1066/linda-ronstadt-photos-13-favorites?page=15) I think I will replace it with yours. Just wondering if there might be a different version of ebay in Australia? Never mind. I just noticed yours is autographed so it must be another photo or from an older post.

Could be around the time they did this song together:
The back of the photo says December 5, 1982 (very good guess Eddie). Linda Ronstadt performing on stage with John Stewart (right) at Pepperdine University, Malibu. The concert was to benefit the local Malibu Hospital. I am not sure who the other guy is.
The above song is from 1980 I believe.

And Linda most likely knew Stewart all the way back to when she started; he had signed on to Capitol as a solo artist in 1967 after the Kingston Trio disbanded, and Nik Venet was his producer, as he had been for the Stone Poneys during that same time frame (1966-1968).
