Yes, this whole thing is blowing up all over the Internet. Evidently, Selena herself supposedly had a meeting with Linda a few months ago, and Linda gave her blessing. If so, then we're off to a pretty damned good start (IMHO).

I personally hope Selena doesn’t sing herself, but lipsyncs to Linda’s vocals 🤞🏻

Just seen in Instagram that Kosh has commented that Selena will be singing … which I don’t think I’m happy with

I'm not familiar with Selena Gomez as a singer but I prefer the biopics where the actor actually sings. Sissy Spacek and Jessica Lange both gave excellent performances as Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline, respectively. But Sissy recording her own vocals, after some coaching from LL, puts her over the top. Dubbing the vocals can take me right out of a movie. Can Selena, with some coaching, get the vocals right? I think she could. Now, I'm not comparing Selena to Sissy as an actress. That's a different hurdle to clear. The big thing will be what part of Linda's life/career the film will cover. Regardless, I'm excited by the prospect.

I would have to believe that this project wouldn't have been announced as being in pre-production, or that Selena had been cast, unless there was already an actual finished script in place. One of the things that Steven Spielberg has always said is that "If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage"; and that can't help but apply to this Linda biopic as well.
Insofar as to what Selena has on her plate, certainly there's a lot for her to be laser-focused on beyond even whether she lip-syncs or actually tries to emulate Linda's actual vocals (the latter of which is, to put it mildly, a job and a half). Apart from what she experienced in Catholic school, Linda's childhood was not necessarily one of overt trauma, but one in which music was the central driving force, and one in which her Mexican heritage was and is a large part of her being. And of course there's Linda's place in the burgeoning California folk-rock and country-rock movements of the late 1960's and early 1970's. All of these elements, and more, will most likely go into this film.
We should also keep in mind that such a film may still be at least a year from actually coming to the big screen, even if everything works out. But now that it's a done deal, here's hoping.

Yaaay, looking forward to this. (If I'd been able to get the link to work, I'd be posting the Steve Carell/The Office "Oh my god... okay it's happening..." gif here.)

I am conflicted over the news. I am of course happy to hear something new about her in the news. But I am not sure how they are going to pull this off. In the given 90 minutes or so how would they do her life? Ever since the Queen one (which was great) they keep trying to come up with another one like it. Rich Happy New Year

To be fair, Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, released in the summer of 2022, was a huge success. which, given who is was about, it couldn't exactly be anything less than that (and at 160 minutes in length at that).
I don't think this biopic of Linda's will be as much of a spectacle (because Linda herself never was), nor quite as long (perhaps 135 minutes?). But I think there are ways of making Linda's life gripping enough for the big screen without the need to embellish or sensationalize.
Watch this space.

That's a different hurdle to clear. The big thing will be what part of Linda's life/career the film will cover. Regardless, I'm excited by the prospect. Personally, I preferred Beverly D'Angelo's vocals as Patsy Cline in the Loretta Lynn biopic. Loretta expressed a wish when the Patsy Cline movie was made, that it had been Beverly continuing as Patsy and singing the songs. She had nothing against Jessica Lange's portrayal, other than Jessica lip syncing to Patsy's voice. I've always wondered how come it was that Beverly never had a successful recording career as a singer and songwriter? She wrote songs with her brother and had a great singing voice and the looks, yet she was one singer who was overlooked by the industry. Selena, I guess I'm okay with simply because Linda has given Selena her blessing, though she would not have been my first choice. I think she looks too young, although she could certainly play Linda at an early age. But, Selena is in her 30s now, the age Linda was when she was at the top of her game, so this may work out in Selena's favor. Using Linda's own vocals rather than Selena's singing voice suggests to me that she would have trouble matching Linda's voice. Here again, with the AI technology, perhaps they could use the technology to match Selena's singing to Linda's singing? Then again, I'd rather Selena sing the songs in her own voice and just do the best she can to sound like Linda.

I wouldn't put much stock in this project going forward. The producer James Keach does mostly small budget stuff, much of which never goes to theaters and I'm only aware of one film of his actually making money. Selena's name has been attached to lots of projects over the years that don't seem to happen. Personally while I understand the appeal of putting someone 'popular' as lead for the project, Selena would not be my choice. She doesn't really look like Linda, she has a very weak singing voice, and speaks in a low monotone that sounds nothing like Linda. I see her in Only Murders in the Building and she has no charisma.
I'm also leery of doing a biopic for Linda on principle. I've loved her since I first heard of her decades ago, but biopics and documentaries are different animals. Documentaries can be staid and just recite the facts, so we can talk about Linda's rise and watch actual clips of her singing. A successful biopic requires.. what's the word.. messiness... in its subject. Like Jim Morrison's drug problems. Or JFK trying to handle the Cuban missile crisis. Linda had a one in a million singing voice but she kept her personal life on lockdown. No scandals, no relationship drama. Everyone likes her. Her childhood was idyllic... you see where I'm going with this? I'm afraid to juice things up they'll do what they did with Bohemian Rhapsody and simply make stuff up. If Linda isn't truly going to unlock and give us much more of a sense of who she is through her private life, I think the biopic will not do anyone a service.

One of the things that Steven Spielberg has always said is that "If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage"; and that can't help but apply to this Linda biopic as well.
My belief is the script has been written and part of the pre-production includes determining the number of scenes that will be needed, securing the permissions from those who will be depicted in the movie, in addition to the music publishing rights be secured. Does Linda get a say in the movie as to which songs of hers will be heard? And if music publishing can't be obtained, would other songs be selected or the scenes in which those songs would appear end up on the cutting room floor? From the way it sounded, Selena was the only one that had been cast for the movie, while others yet to be signed.
Insofar as to what Selena has on her plate, certainly there's a lot for her to be laser-focused on beyond even whether she lip-syncs or actually tries to emulate Linda's actual vocals (the latter of which is, to put it mildly, a job and a half).Apart from what she experienced in Catholic school, Linda's childhood was not necessarily one of overt trauma, but one in which music was the central driving force, and one in which her Mexican heritage was/us a large part of her being. And of course there's Linda's place in the burgeoning California folk-rock and country-rock movements of the late 1960's and early 1970's. All of these elements, and more, will most likely go into this film.
Regarding Linda's childhood, her early life may be glossed over, just as most of her music was glossed over in her autobiography. Regarding a biopic, I wouldn't mind seeing her childhood and early teens depicted and what she experienced or witnessed in the Catholic school. A biopic shouldn't be a two hour movie that focuses solely on her music. The movie should be a celebration of her life, from childhood to now, in addition to a celebration of her music, and a celebration of her heritage.
Regarding her music, I've wondered about the possibility if the movie could include songs Linda sang as part of her family group, as part of the Stone Poneys or a solo artist, but never ended up being recorded or if recorded, has remained unreleased? There is still talk in the Elvis circles about songs he rehearsed (and possibly recorded), sang at home (and possibly recorded) and unreleased songs recorded in the studio, including studio jams, which are lost. The Linda Ronstadt sessionography a Euro fan compiled had several unreleased songs listed. I've always been curious about songs she may have sang in the clubs or in her early concerts on which no information has ever surfaced. The radio concert from 1973 and the guitar shop concert from 1975 (with the Seldom Scene?) would be two such examples on which information wasn't known originally to many.
We should also keep in mind that such a film may still be at least a year from actually coming to the big screen, even if everything works out. But now that it's a done deal, here's hoping.
My guess would be a 2026 release, and I don't take nothing as a done deal until the previews start showing up in the theaters. I've seen three movie remakes of TV series from the 60s listed on IMDB's website on several occasions. Each time the remakes ended up being cancelled, even though the proposed movies had actors signed to the projects. What killed the movie remakes? Lack of interest from the studio that was going to make the movie, the movie studio in question lost the option for the movie, the actor or director bowed out of the movie because it was taking too long to get it underway and tying up the actors and directors making other movies, the studio didn't like the final story lines and script and canceled the movie. A Linda movie should be a sure bet and it would be an instance of where Linda should receive money from the studio for giving her permission for the movie to be made. She may not get royalties on her music but a movie about her life, she's entitled to compensation and I hope her deal includes a percentage of the profits if and when the movie is released.

I think as part of her deal selling her catalogue Linda sold the rights to her image so that may include the portrayal of her in this biopic. Who knows ….
Guessing that if this does go ahead we might see a soundtrack / hits companion released

A thread I would put in the movie is how Linda had to deal with being white and Mexican. Mixed kids usually get it from both sides. The thread could go from childhood and into adulthood. Of course, she built a bridge with the 2 cultures with 'Canciones De Mi Padre'. Also add to that dealing with being a woman in the music business. So there are a couple of conflicts there.

The movie needs fast pacing and it must be a very rich character study. How determined, plucky, gifted and charismatic she is must shine through. It’s an incredible success story about a young woman, wide eyed and clear headed, who rose to the top while battling insecurities and surrounded by truly fascinating people. If the movie accurately recreates her 70s heyday and spends much of the time in that very big moment for her, it can then slickly and quickly move through pirates, riddle to canciones and then it ends with her in a triumphant place. Linda is smart. This is completely all on Selena. She has to become Linda in a way that astounds us all. Look only to the actress playing Diana at the end of the Crown to see that it can be done. It’s a miraculous achievement. I’m betting Selena will do it right. And she’ll be surrounded by lots of people who just won’t let her get it wrong.

I know what you mean about Spacek in the Loretta Lynn Movie.. I'm not too familiar with Selena's work as a singer or an actress.. I've seen a couple clips of her when she was younger on A Disney type show... and I thought physically she could pass for young Linda.. Actually she looked more like Linda then than she does now. As far as the singing.. I wasn't so sure.. So I did a little research. From the few clips I saw, it would be hard to imagine Selena belting out Tumbling Dice or even "I can't help it if I'm still in love with you." Linda has a huge range and very distinctive vocals powerful strong and clear vocals. Selena has a much deeper/lower-quiet almost muffled sounding voice. IMO it would be almost impossible for Selena to mimic Linda's singing and convince me that the voice coming out of her mouth is Linda's.. But who knows? Selena is a singer, I suppose and probably wants to do her own singing.. oy

I read recently that Selena Gomez doesn’t want to be known as a singer and that she may not make any more albums, or just one more album before concentrating solely on acting. I hope KOSH is correct that Selena will be lip-synching to Linda’s recordings. No one can sing like Linda and I would very much be taken out of the movie to hear a third-rate version of her songs. Am trying to keep an open mind about this project.

David O.Russell(American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook)has signed on to direct. This is A+ level Hollywood stuff. The best music biopics tell great stories(Coal Miner's Daughter, Walk the Line, Straight Out of Compton). The somewhat popular entertainment of Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis, Elton were sub-par filmmaking, good screen actors, built around soundtracks. Ronstadt's voice will be used. Movies can be magical- let's hope these talents do right by Linda.

On Wednesday, Gomez announced she was taking a hiatus from social media.
The "Calm Down" singer shared a video of boyfriend Benny Blanco, 35, playing with two young children, with Gomez heard chuckling off-camera.
"I'm off social for a while," she wrote next to the clip. "I'm focusing on what really matters."
Maybe she's focusing on the Biopic? LOL.

My other half heard on WOBM FM from the NJ Shore a whole segment on Linda's biopic and Selena Gomez playing her. I will ask him what else was said again.
I thought it cool he called me right up after he heard it. eddiejinnj My opinion re: the Lily vid is that it should be taken down because of the language. Not for any other reason. Their stupid fight is their fight but since I kind of think this a general audience site it be best to be removed. It doesn't really add to a Linda site discussion. Just sayin, lol Happy Sunday y'all eddiejinnj

It's very much of the way Hollywood is in this age of #MeToo. Absent those accusations and actual behavior caught on camera, I wouldn't have a problem with David O. Russell being behind the camera on this movie. Now, however, things are, how shall we say, a bit different.
If Russell does have to drop out, I would suggest either getting a woman director, say, Patty Jenkins, or, if he isn't too busy, Steven Spielberg. At least get someone who doesn't have this kind of checkered history in which they are aiming to be another Otto Preminger. This film about Linda could, with the right personnel, be something special; but what it doesn't need is this kind of controversy.

All I hope is that it is not one big chronological, career-spanning story with everything done in order. I think that could be a blah, predictable way forward. I think begin with her in a moment of triumph, presumably Canciónes, and then flash back to how it happened (which winds up getting everything you’d want touched upon along the way.) I think David O Russell is likely to do something more avant grade than a Spielberg would and that’s probably a good thing. It should be a work of art and I am confident it will be.
