With the overview they provided, they must be trying to keep sales to a minimum.

What a horrible description, especially since Linda does some great work here. One of her most underrated albums, in my book...

Yes, that kind of review is basically "Kick somebody when they're already down" in our present context (IMHO).

Great find but what's with that lousy review? I find Get Closer was one of her better albums. Good mix of rock, country and adult contemporary styles.

It's not like we should expect every album Linda ever released, or gets re-released in this format, to get sterling reviews or be free of criticism. I myself have been more critical of some of Linda's later endeavors than maybe the law around the forum allows.
That said, however, Get Closer has a lot to recommend: the title track (though many might disagree with me on that); the two Jimmy Webb songs ("The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress"; "Easy For You To Say"); her impassioned take on "I Knew You When"; and "Mr. Radio" (which Trisha Yearwood, the mega-fan of Linda's in the 1990s Women of Country movement, would cover in 1993).
What bugs me the most about this particular review most is: one, as I mentioned before, the way it seems to kick Linda when she's already down; and two, the sheer laziness in the way it's written.

Barnes and Noble has several upcoming exclusives- Bread, The Doors, Ronstadt, Tina Turner- at varying price points. I pre-ordered the Linda Ronstadt title, but I have many questions. Why do you think Get Closer is so expensive? And would gold vinyl be an audiophile product? In my experience, colored vinyl never had the best sound quality, and picture discs were unlistenable. And who can we contact to rewrite that idiotic overview of the album? Why did they involve Dave Marsh?

A B&N Exclusive and they have that snippet of an overview that says "Why did I bother" imo. Why would they go to all the trouble and then say the material is lackluster. Boss, I guess one could e-mail them and in a nice WTFudge way ask if they want to sell the album.......It really is "just so reeeediiiculous"!!!! eddiejinnj

That's so funny that we all had a "WTH?" reaction to their initial ad. I was thinking that too...it almost read like well this sucks but we're selling it anyway....
I've had decent luck with some of their pressings so I'm hoping this will be good. But why gold vinyl? Doesn't red make much more sense? Throw in a few white polka dots? Just odd...plus I have a lot of gold vinyl and sometimes they're kind of blah looking. I do like the clear gold versions though.
So now we have Mad Love (really cool pink swirl), LITUSA (original UK red and Friday Music blue), Live in Hollywood (red), and GH (red). I also have a couple of rare ones - GH Vol 2 on green vinyl from Mexico (terrible copy...might be a boot since it's not on Discogs) and A Retrospective on purple vinyl from France, which looks really cool. Am I missing any??
Here's the updated "oh I guess we really do want to sell copies" lingo on the B&N site:
Overview Linda Ronstadt is truly a worldwide gift to all forms of popular music everywhere. She continues to be a superstar who inspires generations of music lovers with the many fine recordings she has made over the years.
After her stellar run of hit singles and albums throughout the 70's, Linda got together with a super group of renowned musicians and created another pop masterpiece with “Get Closer.” The 1982 classic features some of her most revered songs like her top chart Grammy nominated hit “Get Closer” along with more hits like her stellar interpretation of Billy Joe Royal’s “I Knew You When” and the Jimmy Webb penned smash “Easy For You To Say.” Her rock & roll side is showcased on the Knickerbockers classic “Lies” plus further rock readings with Bert Bern’s pop smash “Tell Him”, and a fine duet with James Taylor on “I Think It’s Gonna Work Out Fine.”
Known for her championing of Jimmy Webb’s catalog, she continues with another one of his big classics “The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress” plus a stellar reading of Kate McGarrigles’s “Talk To Me Of Medicino.”

Back in the 70s I had some awful sounding ones, but it's so popular now that the quality has improved significantly from what I've experienced. There's all kinds of online debates about this, and how black coloring is actually added anyway so all vinyl technically is colored vinyl, but that's for others to debate. Check out the many threads on the Steve Hoffman Music Forums (Great site BTW).

While interesting this practice is also really very annoying .... especially for overseas fans.
Why produce something, obviously marketed to fans, only exclusively available via such a retail store to such a small group of people?

Why produce something, obviously marketed to fans, only exclusively available via such a retail store to such a small group of people? I agree - the fact that I came across this purely by chance also says something. I am a fan of nearly 50 years at this point, and will buy anything like this in a heartbeat. I guess she doesn't really have a marketing team anymore. Possible good news Re: your overseas availability - Fiona Apple's new LP is also a B&N exclusive in the bronze color, but is being marketed in Europe at certain retailers in the same color and packaging from what I've read. So maybe Get Closer will have a similar fate...or there's always ebay.

I also don't like how many CDs come with bonus songs, but only in certain countries, usually the U.S. Fans everywhere should get to hear the same songs, luckily they're fairly easy to find online. The last few CDs by Adele, Def Leppard and Kiss did this.

I've got a RIAA gold record award for Blue Bayou but I doubt there is any actual gold. I think I have a gold vinyl record by Linda ("The Southern Belle") but it was not especially impressive looking. At this price, I hope the Get Closer release sparkles and shines.
180 gram gold vinyl- 180 grams of vinyl- 0 grams of gold I would say.

Forgot about The Southern Belle - I have 2 versions of that - one is gold-ish and kind of blah looking (which is what concerns me about the GC reissue) and one is kind of pearl colored, and pretty.
It would be nice if the new GC had real gold in it...although my turntable & needle might not be happy! Maybe that's why it's more expensive than some of the other exclusives!!!! All kidding aside, it's just colored vinyl. I am curious about what it will look like though.

I have that picture saved on my computer - I titled it "Fave" so you see where I'm coming from. It just epitomizes 70's Linda - gorgeous, great hair, bangles on her wrist, on stage in jeans...no wonder I fell in love with her. Might have had something to do with her voice too.

That overview reads suspiciously like the critique of the album in the Dave Marsh Poison Pen edition of the RS Record Guide.

I just saw this on Amazon.
Get Closer (180 Gram Translucent Red Marble Audiophile/Anniversary Edition)
Being released November 6th. Pre-order price $30.49.
It's being called an Anniversary Edition. 38th is an odd one to me.

Thanks for the heads-up. Wish I had a turntable! Speaking of Amazon, anyone ever hear of this? Looks "unofficial" to me.
