Kennedy Center Celebrates 2019 HonoreesDecember 9, 20195:02 AM ET Heard on Morning Edition Elizabeth Blair 4-Minute Listen ondemand.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/npr/me/2019/12/20191209_me_the_2019_kennedy_center_honorees.mp3?orgId=1&topicId=1008&d=254&p=3&story=786205012&siteplayer=true&size=4057827&dl=1
Transcript Among the artists receiving Kennedy Center Honors Sunday night in Washington, D.C., were Linda Ronstadt, Earth, Wind & Fire and actress Sally Field.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "WHEN WILL I BE LOVED")
LINDA RONSTADT: (Singing) I've been cheated, been mistreated - when...
RACHEL MARTIN, HOST:
I mean, maybe. But that voice got lots of love at the Kennedy Center last night. Linda Ronstadt is one of this year's Kennedy Center honorees. She was recognized along with actor Sally Field, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, the TV show "Sesame Street" and the band Earth, Wind & Fire. NPR's Elizabeth Blair reports on last night's celebration of artistic excellence.
ELIZABETH BLAIR, BYLINE: Before the show, singer Trisha Yearwood told me her dream was to sound like Linda Ronstadt.
TRISHA YEARWOOD: There's a power in her vocal and there's a vulnerability in her vocal that I just - I think she's unmatched.
BLAIR: Linda Ronstadt retired from singing eight years ago. She has Parkinson's. But for four decades, she did everything - country, pop, new wave, jazz. She won 10 Grammy awards, including one for an album she made with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "THOSE MEMORIES OF YOU")
EMMYLOU HARRIS, DOLLY PARTON AND LINDA RONSTADT: (Singing) Those memories of you still haunt me.
BLAIR: During the show, Emmylou Harris gave an emotional speech about her long friendship with Ronstadt.
(SOUNDBITE OF KENNEDY CENTER HONORS)
EMMYLOU HARRIS: Linda - my sister, my dear companion - thank you. And congratulations on your Kennedy Center Honor.
(APPLAUSE)
BLAIR: In the balcony with the other honorees, Ronstadt smiled and teared up. Sitting nearby was Sally Field.
(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "FORREST GUMP")
SALLY FIELD: (As Mrs. Gump) Life is a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you're going to get.
BLAIR: Field played Tom Hanks' mother in the movie "Forrest Gump." She won her first Oscar for "Norma Rae." And in "Smokey And The Bandit" with Burt Reynolds, she looked like she was having a ball.
(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT")
BURT REYNOLDS: (As Bandit) Go, girl, go.
FIELD: (As Carrie) I'm going. I'm going. I got the metal to the pedal and the thing to the floor and...
REYNOLDS: (As Bandit, laughing).
BLAIR: Field went from playing the perky Gidget on TV to winning Oscars and Emmys. She talked about what made this award special.
FIELD: I think we all feel that we're being recognized not just for a body of work, not just because we've been here a long time but because in some ways we've had - resonated in some specific way in the culture.
BLAIR: For Earth, Wind & Fire, that specific way is with songs that have bridged generations.
(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SHINING STAR")
EARTH, WIND AND FIRE: (Singing) You're a shining star, no matter who you are, shining bright to see what you could truly be - what you could truly be.
BLAIR: Maurice White founded Earth, Wind & Fire in the early 1970s. He died in 2016. He had Parkinson's. Singer Cynthia Erivo says she wakes up to their music.
CYNTHIA ERIVO: It gets me through the morning, gets me started. And there's romance in it, and there's love in it. I don't know. They make music for everyone.
BLAIR: Erivo performed a medley of Earth, Wind & Fire songs, including "Fantasy."
(SOUNDBITE OF KENNEDY CENTER HONORS)
ERIVO: (Singing) Every man has a place. In his heart, there's a space. And the world can't erase his fantasies. Take a ride...
BLAIR: In a seemingly unusual pairing, Lars Ulrich, drummer for the heavy metal band Metallica, honored classical conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. Turns out, they've performed together with the San Francisco Symphony orchestra.
(SOUNDBITE OF KENNEDY CENTER HONORS)
LARS ULRICH: He can talk about a piece written in 500 A.D. just as passionately as he will address the merits of a hard rock anthem written in the 21st century.
BLAIR: Tilson Thomas is also known for championing the work of American composers, like Aaron Copland.
(SOUNDBITE OF MICHAEL TILSON THOMAS AND SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY PERFORMANCE OF AARON COPLAND'S "RODEO: HOE-DOWN")
BLAIR: Last night, "Sesame Street" became the first TV show to win a Kennedy Center Honor. The Muppets walked the red carpet.
FRANK OZ: (As Cookie Monster) Me just so happy to be here with all me friends.
BLAIR: Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt said he grew up loving "Sesame Street" and now his two boys do. He says the show teaches more than just the ABCs.
(SOUNDBITE OF KENNEDY CENTER HONORS)
JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT: Healthy habits, social-emotional skills that foster mutual respect and kindness and acceptance of others - something we could all probably use a little more of, especially these days.
(APPLAUSE)
BLAIR: The 2019 Kennedy Center Honors will be broadcast on CBS next Sunday.

For me, Emmylou, a genuine surprise for Linda, was the best moment--"my sister, my dear companion..."

I recorded it and still watching.. Just loved Linda's tribute. When Trisha was singing, I could see Linda mouth the words, "I love her." Also loving Earth Wind & Fire tribute. I learned how to use my falsetto, singing along to Phillip Bailey's part in "You can't hide love." I'll be watching this again.

Linda was first up. A very beautiful, heartfelt tribute. Linda had tears in her eyes a couple of times. I did too, from seeing her tears. For anyone in the Mountain and Pacific time zones who haven't seen it (I'm assuming it's delayed), I don't want to give too much away. Just expect your heart to be touched. Yeah, it was so touching. I guess she didn't expect Kevin Klein. Everything he said about Linda was on point. He really admires her.

Slide, thank you for not including any spoilers. I don't want to say too much, but will say that I was greatly moved by it. Will wait to say more after I know more people have been able to see it. Yes, Kevin Kline was a nice touch, but it was so clear how moved Linda was by having Emmy there.

It broke my heart to see the tears in Linda's eyes. She doesn't cry often in public, but it was a very touching tribute. Both Emmylou and Kevin Kline seemed close to tears in their tributes and it's obvious they care deeply about her. Trisha did a fabulous job on You're No Good and Don't Know Much with Aaron Neville. Linda was mouthing the words to a number of songs, including Somewhere from West Side Story sung by Audra McDonald. I'm sure Linda was longing to sing along....

I thought the whole thing was well done; and of course Linda's segment, which opened it all, was especially moving. Seeing Linda in tears was heartbreaking for sure, but I think it's safe to say that those were tears of joy. She knows that she is still very much loved, wanted, and appreciated by her peers, and her fans. I don't think we could have asked for too much more.

I may have missed a bit of the beginning but from what I saw, it was beautiful. Seeing Linda moved to tears was very touching because it was the first time I ever saw her show such emotion. I thought they could have done a better job showing vintage footage (maybe live Back in the USA with Chuck Berry or live Desperado with the Eagles) but I won't complain. Bravo Linda!

"She knows that she is still very much loved, wanted, and appreciated by her peers, and her fans. I don't think we could have asked for too much more."
Well said, Erik.
My greatest apprehension as a long-time fan(atic) wasn't that Linda would fail to be appreciated, eventually, but that it wouldn't happen in her (or my) lifetime.
That apprehension, especially after this year, has been laid to rest.

I was hoping they would show Linda's segment with Kermit during the Sesame Street tribute. That performance was priceless!

Just an observation about last night's ceremony. Carrie Underwood and Trisha Yearwood are excellent singers and they paid lovely tributes. But they don't have magical voices--that's the only word that I can come up with to describe Linda's voice. Which I guess is a big reason why we're all on this board and why she was sitting in the box last night. As Eve Babitz wrote in her dedications in "Eve's Hollywood": "And to Linda Ronstadt for 'Long, Long Time,' earrings, Arizona and that voice, my God."

I could not really have asked for more, as noted above few people hear such praise and expressions of love while they are still around. Linda seemed genuinely surprised and thrilled especially when Aaron and Emmy took the stage. It is also significant that Linda was accorded a full half hour tribute in a 2 hour show. Respect.

Been a great year for Linda Ronstadt and her fans. Live in Hollywood, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice and now the Kennedy Center Honors. Next year looks to be beginning the same with the airing of the documentary. There may be other things in store for all of us to keep this momentum going.
Above all of these I wish her good and improving health. That would be the best thing we could hope for. Visualize it.

So well put Rob. There’s something about Linda’s voice that makes it masterful that is unquantifiable. Trisha Yearwood said Linda’s voice has a power and a vulnerability, and that is an excellent way to start trying to figure out the mastery of Linda’s voice. Just an observation about last night's ceremony. Carrie Underwood and Trisha Yearwood are excellent singers and they paid lovely tributes.
