Quote by eddiejinnj:
It kind of makes you wonder why Toto didn't release "Stay Away" as that album's second single (the one single that got released, "Pamela", got up to #22), with the addendum "featuring Linda Ronstadt". This could conceivably have been a substantial hit during the spring of 1988 (IMHO).
The argument might then be that listeners would be confused by Linda being so out front on a straight rocker from another group while, on her own, she was actively promoting something totally different, in Canciones De Mi Padre. But at least back then, I think listeners were much smarter and much more attuned than record labels, radio programmers, and even DJ's gave them credit for being (IMHO).

The SNL skit What’s New/Ronstadt I didn’t find it funny, just stupid then as I do today. Not because I’m a fan of Linda’s or that it was insulting, it just wasn’t funny. They were trying to hard IMO. SNL in general I didn’t find funny at that time. The show had lost its mojo and it didn’t find it again until a few years later.

I wasn't a fan of the skit. The song/album title left her open to the negative comments, imo. What are people's opinions on "The First time Ever I Saw Your Face" done by Aaron and Linda? eddiejinnj

Their "Please Remember Me" is gorgeous and it was on the Adult Contemporary chart wasn't it? I believe it got up to the 30's on that chart. I might be confusing it with another song so I will have to check. eddiejinnj
PS: On Wiki, it said that it never was released as a single. I think they missed out not releasing it as a single.

Linda singing female back up to Gene Vincent in "Scarlet Ribbons". So tender.

I think I have only heard that maybe one other time. Is somebody else famous for this song, "Scarlet Ribbons"? eddiejinnj
I looked it up on Wiki and yes many people have done song. Gene and Linda's version is not included. Video on YT says was recorded mid-Aug 1969.

Gene Vincent had a Capitol contract, so Linda was around... I wish her memoir covered those earliest years more.

2011 Linda in the chorus harmony?
If so, where does this fit in with Jimmy Webb's album & The Chieftans' album?

Is there a recording of this SNL skit FADE IN on Julia-Louis Dreyfus dressed and posing like Linda Ronstadt. The words, What's New–Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra frame the shot, exactly like Ronstadt's album of the same name. The background music to the title track plays, and Julia begins to sing live.] Linda Ronstadt: [singing]What's new? How is the world treating you? I made the big bucks fast, Since I have learned to rip off the past. What's new? In four years, I'll be 42, And music's just a game, A silly riddle, Nelsons his name. [Julia sits up] Linda Ronstadt: [singing] What's old? Records I make turn to gold, And though the income's grand, The songs I sing, I don't understand, Thank God for the band. What's next? This old backup singer's perplexed. [coyly] I sing old songs for you, Cause I can't do what's new! [ZOOM back to show Julia leaning back and posing as before, and then the same album frame appears around the shot.] I haven't found a recording of it but I have figured out that it's from the Jan. 14, 1984 show, which was episode 9 of season 9. Don Novello hosted that night and Huey Lewis and the News were the musical guest. That should be enough info to find it.

I have always had mixed feelings re: the SNL skit. I think I find that they acknowledge how well Linda did with recording standards by saying her albums turn to gold and frankly, making a lot of money. I think it would have been cold if Linda was popular and then her NR albums tanked. Like Tony (the Boss) points out, Linda did as well or better in the 80's than 70's. So I kinda think take the good with the bad. If anything; it kept her current. eddiejinnj

Great background chorus effect on the DB song. It gave it the feel for all the ages effect, in my perception. Seems like a difficult arrangement that all seem in sync with. eddiejinnj

As a fan of the original torch singers, jazz and swing bands, Linda in WN started by sounding out of her depth. However Linda's versions have their own charm, just as Doris Day, Martha Tilton or Judy Garland, all home girls at heart. They sing sweetly, not sexily, tunefully and heartfully, lovely to dance to.
I would like a HD release of Linda's WN videos, as well as various concerts.

hb, what does "sounding out of her depth" mean? I have learned from my bloke, Alyn, that there are subtle differences in meanings in GB English and US English. I just don't want to misinterpret it by "ASSuming", lol eddiejinnj eddiejinnj

Means a bit beyond a persons capability, a water metaphor.
In the context of Linda, those higher notes going flat or yelled. Linda is great for "Ghost of a Chance", "Goodbye" and lower moody tunes but for "Hang My Tears Out To Dry", for example, sound to me a bit more coaching was needed.
As Linda went through "Lush Life" & into "For Sentimental Reasons", her singing and song choices for her developing ability improve. I love all 3 NR albums, and Linda's Spanish trio as well. Tacos tonight!

One might say that water metaphor "more easily", imo, if Linda had not had her Pirates period where her voice had such training and a workout because of Linda's talent and devotion to her art and the production. The word "bit" softens the blow, lol. eddiejinnj

. . . Linda in WN started by sounding out of her depth. . . I think that is what Bryant Gumbel said to Linda when he was interviewing her. But she rebuffed him. Then he pointed out that she had an advantage that the old-timers did not have-- video to promote her orchestral music. She also shot him down on that, in that there were videos in the 1940s called soundies. Bryant came across as a bit of an ass in that interview, as if he were interviewing someone in government instead of a pop star promoting a music project. There did not need to be a gotcha moment with Linda.

I don't think that skit is all that funny or clever. JLD got some of the mannerisms, but not a home run IMHO.

Linda was a friend of SNL back to Gilda's Rhonda and the Rhondettes. Shame on SNL. I love Julia but she should have said no. The SNL equivalent of Christgau's C- review. www.robertchristgau.com/get_artist.php?name=Linda+Ronstadt
