For those who live in or have lived in Southern California, Huell Howser has been a staple on local PBS stations for many years. He announced that he was retiring a little while back and people speculated that he might not be in the best of health. And, now, today, comes the news of his passing. www.deadline.com/2013/01/huell-howser-dies-california-gold-iconic-host/

I remember H.H. quite fondly from his time on both KCBS and PBS; he really personified a lot of what made California a great place to live. He'll definitely be missed around these parts (IMHO).

What was he retiring from? I mean, what did he do? Have his own show? A comedian?

He had a show that aired for many years on our PBS stations here in SoCal called California's Gold, which was a chance for people to explore all the best our crazy state had to offer, both well-known and lesser-known.

RonstadtFan, he was this gay Marine who had worked for as an aide for Republicans. He had worked for the local CBS station but then moved over to KCET, where he had a long career. He had a series of shows, including Videolog and Visiting, which chronicled people and places in the L.A. Area. And then he later did "California's Gold," which looked at places all over The Golden State. He had this "gee-whiz" innocence. He was often imitated because if he were touring a Jewish synagogue, and the tour guide said, "This was the Queen of the Shuls (temples)," Huell would then repeat verbatim what the guest just said, "This is the Queen of the Shuls?!?" It was endearing. Here is how the Los Angeles Times is remembering him today -- www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-huell-howser-20130108,0,1021100.story

Do you mean to say that “he” actually spoke on that phone? Are you telling me that the President of the United States spoke on that actual phone on the table by the chair? Why, that’s amazing that he used that phone. Comment by Annette — Monday January 7, 2013 @ 2:12pm PST REPLY TO THIS POST
