Linda while not petite, but slight, has had her "small" size commented on, particuarly in relation to her impressive voice. Dolly Parton is only 5 foot tall, but makes up for it with high heels, hair etc. But back to Linda. Of course she had tall guys in her band as in the photo. I was watching an episode of "Medium" with Patricia Arquette, who is also 5 foot 2 inches tall. Ms Arquette does look short-ish beside male actors, and now female ones too. I thought then of people I knew who might be Linda's height and build, and was surprised. Some videos on Youtube particuarly struck me as showing Linda's height - Linda alongside Glen Campbell and Neil Diamond who tower over her, and one with Johnny Cash, Jerry Reid, Eddie Albert. Cher as well. I have never seen Linda live, only having videos to go on. My mom was 5 foot 4. ![](https://bestclassicbands.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/wwronstadtsimpledreams1977.jpg)

I met her when I was 21 during her Canciones tour. She was backstage and wore no make up and was stunningly beautiful. Her skin was flawless and her energy radiant, sparky and no-nonsense. She smiled and looked at me so intently I was instantly rendered speechless. My friends never let me live it down that I went mute in her presence. She asked if I enjoyed the concert and I nodded yes. She asked me a few more questions and I couldn't speak and she giggled sweetly. I think it entertained her and this was likely something she was used to. Her eyes are hypnotizing. Don’t meet your heroes, I guess. As for her height 5’2” would have been my guess. I was given a few more opportunities to meet her over the years and I always quickly declined. I just knew it would likely happen again all these decades later.

In the photo, she is wearing high heels and standing next to her Stone Poneys band mate Kenny Edwards, who had to be around my height, which is 6'4." He may have been 6'5" or 6'6." I remember seeing a video of Linda in front of Kenny and she didn't even approach his chest. My sister, who is 5'4," just barely comes up to my chest and I still got a foot over her. So, I'd say Linda is 5'2" rounded up, but actually just slightly shorter than 5'2." Definitely not 5'3" as there's a photo from 1967-8 of her with Bee Gees member Maurice Gibb, who was around 5'3" at the time. And Linda was shorter than Maurice, who would eventually go on to grow to 5'10" at the time of his death. Maurice was 17 or 18 at the time the photo was taken to Linda's 21.

I would've killed to have been your date, Linda, as I would've had no hesitancy in talking to Linda R. Pity you didn't act on those opportunities. What you didn't do at 21 did not mean a repeat of what you didn't do. You may have found your voice in talking with someone famous. I would still love to be able to talk to Linda as I relate more to musicians and singers than I do any other people, but with all that has happened to Linda, I realize the chances of that happening may be over, much to my sadness and regret. I would've loved nothing more than to have engaged in talking to Linda for hours or as long as I could before she grew tired and needed to rest. As for her height, I would say she's 5'2" rounded up. Out of the high heel shoes and in her bare feet, she barely looked to be five feet at times. And I don't know if her given height of 5'2" included her wearing shoes or if she was in her bare feet. Another of my million questions I would've had for Linda if I'd had the chance!

I spoke to her several times during the Pirates run and a few other times since, but I was always nervous and probably said some stupid things. I think she dislikes when people react that way to her public persona, but I hope she understands at the same time what those encounters are like for her fans.

Even at age 21 I knew Linda is not keen on being praised. And she’s right not to know what to do with it. I do think she thought I was cute in my puppy dogness. She said in an interview that the nice people hang back and pushy people often talk to her. I was just standing there. She walked over to me (probably at my friends request but they said no) I was too shocked to think of something right to say. I had no problem talking to all 5 women musicians who paid tribute to Linda at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. it was backstage and I said something that might have been l considered rude. I said it took all 5 of them to be one composite Linda. But they agreed! I engaged Emmylou In conversation the most. And with no fear. I’ve been lucky to meet Dolly too (separately) and talked to her very easily. Linda is different. She has this extra glowing quality that disarms me. I’d go to her concerts and go into a trance. My face would turn red and my friends would laugh and say I “had it bad.”I did. And I do. I attended her book tour talk and I was in the front row. She said something about sad music oddly making us happier I nodded and she looked right at me and said out loud “he knows.” I avoided the book signing line. I just could not risk going mute again. And I thought Linda didn’t need my small talk added to all the other stuff. The best things I can do for her are read the books she recommends and turn people on to her music. Notably the Spanish recordings, CLARHLTW, Winter Light and Adieu False Heart. She’s especially proud of those.

I think Linda understands nervous fan reactions. I recall an interview where she met one of HER idols, Liv Ullmann, and basically Linda remembered that she babbled incoherently, her makeup looked greasy, the hat that she thought was cute looked stupid, etc. Jackie Onassis used to get excited when she’d spot Garbo walking in NYC. It happens to all of us.

There is a guy on the web "ronstadtfanaz" who has a 1970s photo of Linda standing next to him. I saw it on an old Cat Stevens forum.

I would say Linda is petite at 5'2".. She may have shrunk a little. A lot of us do when we age. I used to be 5'4".. Now I'm 5'3" (barely) lol.. I'm still 6'4" in my old age. Haven't shrunk at all, really, unless I was taller when I was younger. Used to horse around with my cousin on who was taller, me or him. He was taller, 6'6.5." I came up to the top of his head when I stood up straight and I may have been 6'5." We measured. It was always a joke between us because we were the tallest in our families. Linda looked super small in that black and white, almost like a child. The guy with blond hair next to her, I think is/was Don Randi, who played the harpsichord on Different Drum and other songs (where it was heard) on Evergreen, Vol. 2. I've been watching a number of videos on YouTube where songs have been deconstructed. That is, the songs have been broken down to their individual tracks, usually starting with bass or drums first, then keyboards, guitars, horns or strings (if heard), then all of the musical tracks combined and last, the vocals. I wish I could say there were some Linda tracks but so far I have found none. You can hear a number of songs by the Monkees broken down, as well as the Beatles, CCR, Elvis and the Beach Boys. You get a look at the musicians who played on the recordings if it was not the members of the actual band. Usually, it was the Wrecking Crew heard. You can also get a look at the Wrecking Crew on recordings that were made at Gold Star Recording Services. There were so many musicians in the room in the photo, you might have thought it was a session being produced by Phil Spector. In one photo, Randi was identified as the arranger and keyboards player. It's a fascinating history to be sure though the breakdown of how the musicians played on a recording could be tedious at times, especially those playing the drums and bass. The best drumming I heard was on Elvis's version of Suspicious Minds, though the keyboards (electric organ and piano) had to share with the strings and horns (probably in the bounce down), although losing the piano wouldn't have been a bad idea. Elvis's lead vocal had to be shared with those providing backing vocals though his voice was powerful and commanding. I'm hoping some of Linda's recorded work does turn up, like Love Has No Pride or What's New, Linda has enough music across the decades, it'd be difficult to choose recordings to deconstruct to listen to variable parts.

I think Linda's 5'2" frame fools a lot of people, because some can't imagine that someone who isn't exactly of NBA (or WNBA) stature could have such a big and wide-ranging singing voice as her. Even now, long after she was forced to retire, that voice is still heard in the mental jukeboxes of her fellow female singers, and it can be intimidating (IMHO).

When Linda was on TV, I would watch (of course) and listen to her sing (of course, again) and wonder just where that magnificent singing voice of hers was coming from? Singer Jackie DeShannon was just five foot tall and although she had a good singing voice. it wasn't as strong as Linda's singing voice. Same for Petula Clark, who was also just five foot tall, I believe. Incredibly good singer and voice, but her voice didn't compare to Linda's. I believe she was some kind of angel sent from heaven to grace our world with her singing, maybe as a reminder good things come in small packages.

Linda's a farmgirl......people don't realize, most great singers are actually supreme athletes'....prob how her illness just seems to have overwhelmed her on so many levels, understandably, but till that occurred I think she really was strong and resilient

Quote by musedeva:
I think it also helped that she had (and still does) an appreciation for the environs around which she grew up. The Sonoran Desert is one of the hottest places on the planet during the summer, where temperatures can sometimes hit 120 degrees (only Death Valley is hotter). She also related in her memoirs that the summer monsoons, called "Chubascos" and caused by tropical moisture coming up from the Gulf of Mexico) can turn normally bone-dry arroyos into raging rivers within minutes. And of course this being a desert, you have the usual cast of creatures: tarantulas, rattlesnakes, coyotes, bobcats, etc. All of this made her resilient and less susceptible of falling into too many of the bad habits that are a part of the entertainment industry, especially her part (IMHO).
