Who among us is surprised, and, more importantly, who can blame Maren for feeling the way she does?
In truth, the atmosphere in country music is even more toxic for women than it was twenty years ago, when the Dixie Chicks were basically shown the door because of what Natalie Maines said about Bush II just before we invaded Iraq. Maren is clearly someone who loves the music, but she is also in a country music industry that still thinks that women like her are merely the "tomatoes" in the country music salad, while the Bromeisters (espeiclaly Jason Aldean) are the lettuce, or so said Keith Hill back in 2015 (neglecting the fact that even lettuce spoils after a while).
Maren has also taken to calling today's country music "butt rock", so we can add that to how Tom Petty once viewed it ("bad 80's rock with a fiddle") and, of course, Linda's long-standing view of it being "mall crawler music". And we can also add Maren to the long list of female artists in the genre who consider Linda a significant influence on them.
It's sad to see her leave the country music genre, if that's what she indeed does, but it's not her loss, it is the country music industry's loss as far as I'm concerned.
