In this interview, when asked about influences, the first name from Linda is Kitty Wells. I read this interview at the time it was released and that really surprised me. I was a fan of many female country singers, but Kitty Wells was one that I found very hard to listen to. Maybe Linda was just lying outright because she thought that would be a good answer for a country music magazine.
In the 1996 Goldmine interview, Linda went the opposite direction, saying "I wasn't a person who hungered after a Kitty Wells record." Then she unfairly insulted Kitty's upbringing and refinement.
Maybe Linda should just keep Kitty Wells' name out of her mouth.
I dined across from Kitty Wells one time. I had attended the CMA Awards in Nashville and Kitty had performed on the show with Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn and k d lang. After the awards, Kitty and her husband headed to Shoney's, as did I. Being the queen of country music, she spread her fur stole across the booth to showcase herself. Very refined.

Bizarre interview. “I hate music”? This is the first Linda interview where I thought “I don’t like this person.” Maybe she was just having a bad day.

I think she was referring to hating the music business and performing. Either way, she did sound rather grumpy in this interview and used the word "hate" a lot.

I think this is one of those cases in Linda's career where she doesn't have a filter for what she says. Sometimes that's a good thing because people do appreciate honesty. Other times, however, things you say can come back to haunt you at some point in the future, even decades later.

Yes, as the TIME story said:
"She talks too openly about insecurities, she thinks. It's not that interviewers lie, 'but for instance you tell them that you have felt suicidal - who hasn't? - that you had the idea of wading into the ocean in North Carolina and swimming to New York. Then that comes out in a magazine, and it becomes a permanent fact about you, when really it's just momentary.'"

I remember Linda saying one time when asked what she would change about her career and she relied that she wishes she had been more gracious.
Maybe this was one of those times LOL!
Sometime I just shake my head how open she was during this time. She was shy and not terribly confident.

Welcome, Tlw1954, to the forum. She was very contradictory at times. Linda seems to just free flow thoughts out loud probably partially because she is nervous and talks fast. I noticed they spelled the word "distilled" "destilled". I, too, was taken aback when she said I hate music. I didn't get a grumpy vibe about this interview (which I never read before Thanks, Boss). Her discussion of chick singers deserving the prejudice they get I don't understand. eddiejinnj

If she had only said she was influenced by Dolly Parton, it would have fit in so much better with her later revisionist claims of Dolly Parton being her favorite country girl singer. Although that too may have only been a convenient factoid. Influenced by Patsy Cline would have been totally believable.
