Astrud Gilberto, 'The Girl from Ipanema' singer, dies at 83 A little story. Back in the 1980s, what was then the Museum of Broadcasting had a festival over 10 days or so at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. My friends and I attended "An Evening With Mary Tyler Moore." Prior to Ms. Moore coming out for an interview and audience Q&A, the museum showed some clips, including video of Astrud Gilberto performing "The Girl From Ipanema" on a 1960s TV variety show. Having grown up in the 1960s, I remembered her and the song and enjoyed her performance. But, for reason, a number of younger audience members thought it was a scream and laughed throughout the video. As soon as Ms. Moore took the stage, in a nice way, she said she couldn't believe people were laughing at Ms. Gilberto and then Ms. Moore added, "She was the height of chic!"

I love this story. Saving hawks, defending Astrud…I admire Mary for so much more than her brilliant TV and film work.
