Found on Kilph Nesteroff's tumblr blog. Based on the info in the article and this post from the 1969 thread, the date of the show would be February 19, 1969. Guessing that this review comes from a showbiz trade paper, probably Daily Variety. Apologies if this has already been posted here in some form. (Edit: posting the review as an attachment rather than a hotlink.)

I have not seen this article/review in quite a while, so thanks for posting. I wonder if they spelled Jeff Hanne wrong and it is Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I would think so. eddiejinnj

Quote from February 1969 revoew"
Normally I try not to read too much into critiques, but even this early in her career, when Linda was out in the open about trying to reconnect rock with its C&W roots, this one seems just a tad bit condescending.
But the review does point out one critical thing that was quite true at the time, and that was Linda being paired with Alice Cooper, an artist with which, to say the least, she had practically nothing in common, either then or now.

Quote from February 1969 revoew" The snake gig was kind of cool... (even Elvis liked it lol) I like a few of his songs but I've never been a huge fan of A.C. ..I don't remember where I heard him say this.. and I'm paraphrasing.. (it may have been on youtube?? who knows?)... He made a snarky comment towards Linda and even threw Don Henley in the mix...about their "beliefs,".. it was so stupid.. something a kid would say.. i.e. .. "really, Linda Ronstadt and Don Henley? Like I'm going to care what they say... Yet, he claims not to advertise his "beliefs," but he went out of his way to make a stupid comment.. basically advertising his beliefs .. he claims should not be advertised. lol

Dianna, I found this news story. I did not find the original Washington Post article.

I think a big reason why Linda was paired with Alice Cooper back in '69 is that both of them were managed by Herb Cohen. Beyond that, however, this was otherwise a truly bizarre mismatch--even more bizarre than when Linda and the Stone Poneys were the opening act for The Doors the previous year.
Quote by Dianna re. Alice Cooper:
There are two ways of opining on A.C.'s quote. One is the politically correct way, in saying that he was duplicitous. The other, and less PC way, is to say that he was a Hypocrite.

Erik, it seems like the reviewer was praising Linda for the most part. The "condescending" tone you might perceive is the way women were treated in general at that time. Being called "Miss" Ronstadt is a prime example, before this was thankfully changed to Ms. in the 1970s. I never heard the song "Alligator Man," but it's interesting to see Linda's setlist choices in that early era in her career.

All true, but that wasn't the problem I had with it. The reviewer described her vocals as "cornpone", which is a little bit extreme, in my humble opinion; it kind of made it seem like she was trying hard to be, well, a Hick.

Cornpone as an adjective means rustic, unsophisticated. Many of Linda's early recordings were just that and there is nothing wrong with that, imo. One I think must be careful using the term Hick, imo. It prejudges people who live in the country vs urban areas. Examples of very rustic songs by Linda are her take on "Louise", "Hobo's Meditation", "Life is Like a Mountain Railway", "Up to My Neck in High Muddy Water" even "Nobody's" (which is a great song), "Old Paint" and "Rambler Gambler". A beautiful song or singing can be simple and quote unsophisticated but have a profound effect upon somebody. eddiejinnj

IMHO, I don't think the reviewer meant "cornpone" in a derogatory sense. I think he felt she was capturing an authentic folksy, country vibe, not that she was a "hick."

I agree as in the Americana type genre which Linda could be considered an innovator, too!!! eddiejinnj
