I only came to appreciate his work fully in recent years but just marvelled at his ability, his personality and well...his eccentric genius... he kind of had that style and panache that fitted alongside some of my other heroes, Lowell George, Van Dyke Parks come to mind immediately...they just don't make them like that any more. There is a beautiful video of Jackson in concert from about 1978 performing For A Dancer with just David accompanying him on violin. I know they did it many times, but the rawness and the sheer emotion in that performance is just amazing. A mind-blowing musician has left the stage.

This was very sad news to hear, surprising in a sense because David had been off the news media radar for some time. And I haven't seen one report listing him as a distant cousin of Linda's, though we all knew he was. Still, he was more than just a session player; I would say a more accurate description of him was that he was a world musician, seeking out those strange musical instruments that captured his own musical interests and tastes. His obituary would've been a good place to have listed all of the musical instruments he was capable of playing, though he himself couldn't tell a reporter how many instruments he played. He just could, and that's what made him stand out in a world of musicians. And that made him a musician that can never be replaced. And also makes one wonder how many musical instruments he was capable of playing will disappear into history with his passing, never to be known of again. Not to mention the artists he worked with, including Linda, and who could've added to the history and stories of those artists. Things only he knew and never told, now lost with his passing.

David Lindley passed away. I always loved his playing. He played on sessions and concerts backing Linda on several occasions and a lot of work with Jackson Browne. RIP David.

I often wondered if being referred to as Linda's 'Distant Cousin' was a bit of a tongue in cheek in-joke amongst musician friends. David was so eccentric and I'm sure an incredibly nice guy, I wonder if his charming weirdness led to the reference as 'distant' was sort of meaning ...best to not be near him, in a comedic way, and the cousin thing as just completing the joke? Maybe?

Is David Lindley related to Linda Ronstadt?
BY DESMOND KUFFOUR MARCH 4, 2023 abtc.ng/is-david-lindley-related-to-linda-ronstadt/
It doesn't say how. Maybe through Linda's Dalton family line.
in case anyone was wondering:
Lindley died after a long illness on March 3, 2023, at the age of 78.[29][27] He had COVID-19 in 2020 which his family said developed into Long COVID with lasting kidney damage.[30] wikipedia
Covid is a nasty disease and can have lasting effects on some people. Take care of yourself if you've had it.

And let’s not forget Linda was producer on Lindley’s El Rayo-X’s album Very Greasy.

Yes; and I think it was the first album of anyone's where Linda was actually credited in that capacity (and this was 1988, I believe).
