Here is the trailer, which features Linda (via voice-over), among others we all know (Souther, Browne, Nash, Geffen, etc.) --
And here is a discussion about the upcoming documentary (there is a #Linda hashtag in the text below the video) --

I have heard of her through discussion here but I never knew she was the first artist signed to Asylum. Good trailer for the documentary, imo. eddiejinnj

The "Tenderness" album was released in 2015, and I think the songs included were written about that time.

It seems amazing that Linda and JD became friends until this day. He presented her her Lifetime Grammy. eddiejinnj

No doubt that JD was a player (as many men are), and he did write "Faithless Love." He and Linda were not in a romantic relationship for that long. If Linda was a muse, I would say that Judee was not "amused."

Guardian article on Judee Sill documentary (Excerpt from article: Sill’s labelmate Linda Ronstadt acknowledges her music as "something special ... it wasn't in a category ... it wasn't in a niche. It was original."

I heard about Judee years ago and always wanted to check her out, but never could find copies of her album. Same for Valerie Carter and some other female artists and even bands. Judee's story is a tragedy as I believe these days that in the 60s and early to mid 70s, the music industry just didn't promote female artists. The industry pushed male artists and male bands but not female artists and bands. Some got some push and some may have gotten a hit record, but never a hit album of major proportions. Even after Carole King released "Tapestry" and it sold ten million copies. There was no push to find the next Carole King like there had been in the 50s to find someone like Elvis or in 1964 in the wake of the success of the Beatles. It was like female artists and bands were invisible. I've always believed Linda could've made an album that would've sold as much as Carole's had her early albums had more original songs than covers of old songs, but even Capitol's ideas were that Linda record covers of more recent songs. And they had enough country artists on their label who had done just that, and whose albums that were not returned sat in the cut-out bins gathering dust because no one wanted those albums. But, I think Linda, like Judee was simply a victim of the label politics. They wasn't going to promote her the way she should've been promoted. Instead, she was going to be a label loss for the books, which too many female artists were. And many of the female artists, like Judee (and Linda), made some of the best music one never heard.

I have heard of her but I think that it is mostly on here (this forum provides a good overall discussion of music). As for Linda, it was me seeing the GH ad on TV and saying to myself, wow I know some of her songs. Very soon after, my dad and stepmom took me to Monmouth Mall and I bought GH at Sam Goody. eddiejinnj

Linda could of brought her recognition and respect a Long Long Time......a go... she did record her song Jesus Was A Crossmaker but changed the name to Bandit And A Heartbreaker interesting comment @ethergirl 3 years ago This is actually a Judee Sill song called "Jesus was Cross Maker". The lyrics here are identical except in the original after the "Bandit and a heartbreaker" line she sings "Oh but Jesus was a cross maker". I guess Linda's people thought this change would make it more mainstream and commercial? It's not really a religious song, though. I love the song and Judee's version of it, and was thinking the Linda Ronstadt ( whom I'm a big fan of) could really do it justice with a cover and I googled and found this version. Ironically the song is about JD Souther who broke Judee's heart when he dumped her for Linda. ( Judee and Linda were friends, Judee invited Linda over to a party at her house, where she met JD and that was that.)

"Bandit and a Heartbreaker" was not on a Linda album but appeared as one of the unreleased outtakes (one of the few) on Linda's boxed set. So, it's not a song that Linda was not that thrilled with enough originally to release on an album. She probably had to be coaxed to include it on the boxed set. That said, I love Linda's performance on the song.

I believe that Rob from NJ (who I miss on the forum) agreed that she did the song (vs it being "Falling Star") at Saratoga Springs Arts Center in the summer of 1983 (probably near when Moky saw her in Boston that year). It was considered the extended or second leg of the GC tour and of course her musical course changed dramatically with the release of "What's New" soon after. Maybe Linda changed the title to reflect what the song is about (a heartbreak song). Not sure why, though, she took out the Jesus line? Maybe, again, to not confuse the real meaning of the song.

She sang it in Boston on July 22, 1983. Moky/Mike, color me ignorant then, because I did not become aware of the song "Bandit and a Heartbreaker" until the boxed set was released. 1983 was pre-Internet and social media and this Forum and, therefore, I apologize for being ill-informed.

I didn’t mean to have any “Tone” with my reply. Just simply stating she sang it live once that I witnessed. I meant nothing more. I knew nothing about the song or Judee Sill at that point. Glad I have my original copy of The Boxed Set. I need another, mine is in rough shape.

Opens in NYC today. To commemorate, the NY Times today published “The Ultimate Judee Sill Primer” including “Jesus Was a Cross Maker.” I know that we’ve discussed the title change in Linda’s version but I’m not sure that I knew the origin of the alternate title. This seems to clarify it:
“This was perhaps her most famous song, and almost certainly her most covered. Interviews in “Lost Angel” confirm that Sill wrote this tune about her “unhappy romance” with the singer-songwriter and future Eagles collaborator J.D. Souther. As Sill tells a live audience in one clip, “One morning I woke up and realized ‘he’s a bandit and a heartbreaker’ rhymes with ‘but Jesus was a cross maker.’ And I knew that even that wretched bastard was not beyond redemption.”
I guess this still leaves open the question of how/when Linda heard this story and how she came to use the alternate title. (Apparently, she empathized with Judee’s feelings? The song is about JD after all, or at least inspired by him.)

Well this is very interesting. If you go now to the NY Times Judee Primer, what I quoted above about JD has been deleted completely from the first version published earlier today, replaced with an anemic comment about the Hollies cover. No reference to JD at all. One can only speculate…I’m going to ask.
