Blurb in today's New York Times about the New Year's Eve concert on PBS ....
[Here in L.A. on PBSSoCal (HD channel on Cox Cable is 1029) from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. "Live From Lincoln Center."]
Before his death on Aug. 6 Marvin Hamlisch had been scheduled to conduct the New York Philharmonic in its annual New Year’s Eve gala. Now the orchestra will toast this composer and conductor in “Live From Lincoln Center: ONE SINGULAR SENSATION: CELEBRATING MARVIN HAMLISCH,” on PBS stations on Monday, Dec 31, at 8 p.m.
Directed by Lonny Price and conducted by Paul Gemignani, the concert will feature music spanning Mr. Hamlisch’s career — from his signature works “A Chorus Line” and “The Way We Were,” as well as “The Sweet Smell of Success” and “The Sting.” Audra McDonald, in her new role as the official host of “Live From Lincoln Center,” which is presenting the concert, will perform with Joshua Bell, Raúl Esparza, Michael Feinstein, Maria Friedman, Josh Groban, Megan Hilty, Kelli O’Hara and Frederica von Stade. Accepted into the Juilliard School as a prodigious 6-year-old, Hamlisch went on to win big: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, two Golden Globes and a Pulitzer Prize for work that spanned film, television, theater and recorded music. He had appeared four times with the New York Philharmonic, his hometown orchestra, conducting 40 of his own songs.
