Get ready this December for director Steven Spielberg's reworking of the ten-time Oscar-winning 1961 musical classic WEST SIDE STORY. This is the first trailer for said film:

I am curious to see this, the original is a classic, tough standard to meet. They have a great score to work with, though ...

No use in denying that; this is a tough one to top. But I doubt Spielberg wanted to do this film because he thought he could top the original. It is truly a timeless story (essentially, as was the case with the movie and the original musical itself, it is Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet set on the mean streets of NYC); and what I suspect he wanted to do was make something of a comment on ethnic racism and bigotry, as he had on the anti-Semitism that led to the Holocaust (SCHINDLER'S LIST), or the turmoil around the Pentagon Papers (THE POST). And since we are talking about a director whose films have made a combined $20 billion, he is almost certainly the only one who could possibly get away with doing this (IMHO).
