I guess this should have hit me before when it came to Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks selling their catalogs. I would imagine that streaming would put an extreme strain on the finances of our favorite artists; and while some would cluck their tongues and say rock artists spend all their money on sex and drugs, it's not necessarily true, nor even the rule.

I never understood why artists would want to sell their publishing rights, they can end up missing out on millions of dollars in earnings in the long run. Leonard Cohen was nearly broke when his manager sold his rights, that's why he toured for 5 years so late in his career. Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman have feuded for years because Cummings bought the rights to the old Guess Who songs without informing him and now Cummings earns 75 cents for every dollar for their songs and Bachman only earns 25 cents. American Woman and These Eyes still get a lot of airplay so it must be costing Bachman millions. Def Leppard didn't have their songs on Spotify until 2018 because Universal Music owned their original recordings and they had a dispute about royalties.

On the other hand, at Bob Dylan's age, it would take much longer than the rest of his life to earn 300 million dollars from his songs. And he still owns the recordings-- they don't get his voice.
