The quality was decent for something from 1980 being viewed in 2020 on a large wide screen tv. I would say the original source tapes were used. Party Girl from this concert is a great Ronstadt performance. In an interview somewhere I know Linda said she was really into the song at the time and it shows in her interpretation. I’ll keep hoping for the full concert on DVD!

One of Canada's largest newspapers gave the show a good review - www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/television/article-what-the-world-needs-now-love-life-a-gift-of-smart-romantic/ Linda Ronstadt: Live in Hollywood (Sunday, PBS 9:30 p.m.) is a music gem. Recorded in 1980 at Television Center Studios in Hollywood, the concert captures Ronstadt, then at the peak of her reign as the most popular female country-rock singer and interpreter of other people’s songs. The concert was recently released as Ronstadt’s only live album, after it was believed the original recording was lost.

$96 is for a year's membership to PBS; for that you get the digital download of the concert.
That's what I did.
I realized that I pay for other streaming services (HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Start) but don't for public television, even though I watch it a lot. Been meaning to become a member but never got around to it, until last night.
(Much of PBS's programming—especially their back catalog—is only available to members, although current programs/shows/episodes are available to all for a limited time frame.)
It was so much fun watching that concert on broadcast TV. She was so emotive and spunky and darling and, of course, that voice just slayed me. I couldn't help falling for her all over again.
And yes, I did miss Party Girl, but I can't say the same about Mad Love and Cost of Love. I don't think those two were especially good performances, with Linda stomping on the vocal gas too hard and too often, in the process shredding her voice to the point where it makes me wince to hear it. And she's done I Can't Help it countless times better than she does here; perhaps it's the arrangement.
This version of Silver Threads, however, is the very definition of country-rock. Smoking hot.

Quote by Richard W:
With respect to "Mad Love" and "Cost Of Love", I suppose she did do some "vocal shredding"; and that's not necessarily to everyone's taste. I guess I don't mind it so much, though. If Linda's guilty of this in service of her idea of raw passion, then so be it.
The rendition of "Silver Threads" here is truly unique, driven by what, to my ears, sounds like a Farfisa organ. She was pushing this C&W standard (which she bought into rock) into the 1980s and, in retrospect, probably paving the way for acolytes like Trisha and Martina (IMHO).

Party Girl and a few other songs are missing from the PBS version of the concert. The video of Party Girl is posted earlier in this thread if you want to see it. Has anyone received the download from PBS? I wonder why they are not offering a DVD.

Am quoting what CyberianHusky posted because the post lists the line-up on the PBS schedule -- Here's the PBS concert performances. Not the entire HBO concert but at least a few more songs that weren't included on the CD.
1. I Can't Let Go 2. It's So Easy 3. Willin' 4. Just One Look 5. Blue Bayou 6. Lies 7. Faithless Love 8. Hurt So Bad 9. Silver Threads & Golden Needles 10. Poor Poor Pitiful Me 11. You're No Good 12. How Do I Make You 13. Back In The USA 14. Heatwave 15. Desperado [/div] [/quote] The Pledge Breaks are after "Blue Bayou" and before "Lies"; again after "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and before "You're No Good"; and then after "Desperado." The credits roll after the final Pledge Break.

I wonder if they are not offering a DVD. John Boylan's comment on 12/16/2018. "Hi Joe The people in your comments section make several intelligent points, but those points do not take into account some of the behind-the-scenes realities of the 21st century record business: 1. Although it is technically possible to put up to about 85 minutes on a CD, the actual Red Book standard mandated in the technical specifications set down by Sony and Phillips states that 74 minutes is the maximum. Yes, I’ve seen some of the longer classical CDs, but chances are very good that they won’t play in many CD players, only on CD-ROM drives for ripping to iTunes. We have tried to adhere to Red Book standards which Rhino prefers. Anything else risks compromising sound quality. 2. In addition to the Red Book issue, there is a fee for every song that appears on a CD. By statute it’s $.091 per song per CD, paid by the record company to the various copyright holders of the songs. Since Linda did not write any of her hits, she is unable to offer a reduced rate to Rhino, so we had to pay full rate for all 12 songs. 3. Even if those first two issues somehow went away, there’s still the matter of the vinyl release – 20 songs would have necessitated pressing four sides, a double vinyl package that is very expensive to produce. To adhere to Red Book standards, we would have had to have a double CD as well, also expensive to produce. This would have priced the package above that which many buyers want to pay. 4. Every musician on the CD deserves to be paid for his or her work, so we adhered to the rules of the American Federation of Musicians and paid a substantial re-use fee to everyone. Those fees are calculated on the number of minutes of music. 5. Of course, we would all love to have a professional standard recording of Linda when Waddy Wachtel and Andrew Gold, and any number of other great players were in the band. I wish such a recording existed. However, this is one phenomenal group of players, all at the height of their game – that’s enough for me and should be enough for any Linda fan. To sum this up, after many hours of discussion (the process was certainly not “half-assed,” believe me), it was decided that the 12-song project was the best combination of art and commerce. The effort to bring this album to fruition took over a year, and involved the work of several lawyers, record company people, and Linda herself, who signed off on everything. As to the idea of a DVD/Blu-ray reissue, let me say that we are trying to make that viable for the future. Blu-ray is a very advanced format, however, and the master video of this concert is quite dated, technically speaking. It uses the old 4:3 aspect ratio instead of the current 16:9, and it looks sub-standard next to 4K video. However, we’re working on it, with no guarantees. I realize that none of these reasons, and indeed, none of the financial realities of the 21st century music industry, mean anything to the true music fan, myself included. All we can do is to keep trying. I do. Every day. By "Start", Tony, I meant "Starz." Autocorrect got me. Haven't downloaded the concert yet so I don't know its extent. I would assume what was shown. Update: Evidently I'm to receive a code in the mail. Odd.

I emailed PBS SoCal and told them the concert they aired had several songs missing, including for example "Look Out for My Love" and asked if the download was the full concert or just what we saw on the air. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the information but here is the response I got:

This was the "Mad Love" tour but they concentrated more on Linda's previous hits for the PBS airing. I saw that concert tour at Radio City in 1980 and it was definitely more comprehensive. I'm sure the digital download is the whole concert. It's too bad that it was so hot in the room when it was filmed and they had to perform under those conditions.

In all good honesty, very few concerts are great examples of absolutely perfect working conditions, for either the performers or the audiences. For all the (justifiable) complaints Linda voiced about the hot lights ("I feel like a chicken-fried steak" [LOL]), she and her crew handled it like troopers. And as was the usual, Linda delivered an ultimate out-of-the-ballpark performance (IMHO).

Here is the answer from the producers:
" Dear Richard, I can confirm that the digital video download will be the same as the broadcast version and it will not include the additional songs that were in the original 1980 concert. Our Membership services team did not know that Linda sang more songs that night. So, when the PBS description said the “entire concert” they meant of the PBS concert that we broadcast. Hopefully those songs will surface at some point! Best, M Maura Daly Phinney VP, Membership and On-Air Fundraising PBS SoCal – KCET From: Rick Date: Sunday, June 7, 2020 at 3:23 AM To: Maura Daly Phinney Subject: Re: Linda Ronstadt, ‘Live in Hollywood’ Hello, Ms. Daly Phinney — Hope this finds you doing well. I was so thrilled when “Live in Hollywood: Linda Ronstadt in Concert” (1980) premiered on PBS SoCal premiered last Sunday. As a fan of Ms. Ronstadt’s since her first hit in 1967, I’ve been hoping to see this concert restored as you showed it; however, the complete concert featured 20 songs by Ms. Ronstadt. The version you broadcast with pledge breaks was missing five songs. I renewed my membership with PBS SoCal during the Ronstadt concert. A friend posted the following on a Linda Ronstadt Forum he runs. As you can see, PBS SoCal is assuring Tony that it is the complete concert with all 20 songs as it aired on Home Box Office in 1980. Is this something you can confirm as true? My memory is that during the pledge breaks it wasn’t stated if the video download would be the complete concert, but your Member Services Dept. is certain that it is. I’d appreciate knowing one way or another. The other songs include Neil Young’s “Look Out for My Love”; “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You”; the title track off her 1980 “Mad Love” album; and Elvis Costello’s “Party Girl.” Thank you very much. “

It's disappointing that that PBS Broadcast does not include the entire concert. The setlist from Television Center Studios, Hollywood clearly lists 20 songs that were performed. It seems odd that songs would be edited out of the tape for HBO, especially those from Mad Love. Also, Linda always introduces the members of the band at every concert and that was omitted.

Pop, I agree. First, we got the watered-down 12-song album after so many years. Now, a 15-song edited-down concert. I would imagine that if they went to the trouble to clean up the 15 songs that likely the entire original concert was cleaned up. It wouldn’t surprise me if in a couple more years “the complete, unedited concert” is peddled to us. It is coming out in dribs and drabs. Of course, I bought the album. I contributed to PBS to obtain the download of the 15-song version and I’ll be glad to have it.

Is anyone able to find out from Linda’s management the reason for not releasing the complete concert? I would also be interested to know if they plan on releasing the concert on DVD, ideally the complete concert. I know John Boylan commented when people were unhappy with the shortened audio version. Thanks.
