My thoughts, Robert. The only thing good I see happening, is her followers, who might not know of Mitchell, will research and find out more about her vs a 23 yr old still singing 6th grade crap.. sorry to her fans. On another side, I hope they don't take away from these 3 ladies.. Mitchell, Carole King and Carly.. and how they shaped that era.. I'm not familar with swift's acting skills at all.

I don't know why it is, but going on the basis of her cameo role in the Garry Marshall film VALENTINE'S DAY, there is something downright heartsinking about the the notion of the "writer" of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" being cast as the writer of "Both Sides Now."

I can see it. There are many similarities. I may be one of the few here to admit to liking Taylor (from what I have seen and heard).
One of my top favorite Joni's:

well, rob in all due respect. They're both blonde and female.. that's where it ends for me. I agree with Erik.. For me, it would be like the role of Linda Ronstadt being played by Snooky (or however you spell it) I think with a great poet/artist like Joni, they could find a really great and talented actress who would IMO be a much better fit. Swift, that is if they use her voice and not Joni's.. is gonna need to get A. A voice coach B acting coach and C. really dig deep to understand the songs Joni wrote. I have a feeling this film is gonna be a huge disaster which frustrates me because i feel Joni's story needs to be told in the best possible way.

In that sense, yes. But in Taylor's case, there isn't all that much in the way of time. And then it comes down not really so much to the acting as the voice again.
Besides, I think it's an almost galactic leap from "all you're ever gonna be is mean" to "they paved paradise, put up a parking lot."

Well, just as Erik and I have espoused Tift Merritt as a formidable talent, I am again touting someone who HAS been called the Joni Mitchell of her generation. A prime example of Regina's gorgeous lyrics and creativity (you can really hear Joni's influence here.. which is a good thing:

With respect to the film on Joni, Carole, and Carly, it probably won't come out for at least a year, maybe two; and perhaps in that time, Taylor will have gained the finer points about pulling off something even remotely resembling what Joni was about during that age. If she does that, I think she'll have shown a heck of a lot more in the way of maturity than people ever dreamed possible.
In the meantime---God knows what Joni herself would think of this kind of casting of her.

BTW according to the Hollywood Sun: Alison Pill is being tapped to portray Carole King, and Jessica Pare is in the top spot for Carly Simon... Jessica Pare was pretty good in 'Mad Men'; I think she might be able to pull it off..

Time will tell.. Jessica Pare can sing, so who knows...

Don't know. But I betcha, since Taylor is a very successful singer, she will use her own singing voice. Why not, in some bio's, an actor/actress who is not known for their singing will use their voices.

I also love this one by Joni too. She was a little before my time yet as a young person in the 80's I remember buying this album and was absolutely mezmorized by this song.

Quote by robertaxel re. Tift Merritt and Regina Spektor:
With Tift, of course, nothing more need be said (except for everything); and with Regina, yes, I would agree with Robert that she might be the Joni of her generation.
My personal favorite of late, probably the best I've heard for myself since Tift, has been this here "young'un"--Caitlin Rose (whose mom has written for Ms. Swift and scarfed a few Grammys in the bargain). Here's Caitlin in concert in England from February 2010, doing her very rustic take on Mr. Dylan's "Tomorrow Is A Long Time":

Caitlin, is very good, too, Erik. She is very cute, too. but, unfortunately in this age, it almost seems like a young singer like Caitlin would have to either have some weird gimmick to get noticed or look like a human doll. I don't think we've seen that kind of natural carefree look along with talent since around Linda's time.

None of the women mentioned here do much for me. Unless I found someone "striking" I would prefer to stick with my old girl favorites, Linda, Barbra, Joey, Karen, Annie, Eva, Jann...etc.

Rob, I found this from Bab's, from funny girl, second hand rose. I kind of dubbed myself that nickname because I'm always shopping at the thrift stores for goodies. But I love this performance.. In certain parts it looks like she is lip synching. I like some of the newer singers but they have to grab me. I usually stick to my old faithful's too.

Love her 'bride of Frankenstein" hairdo. A bit longer it would be in Marge Simpson territory. Her talent is one of a kind.
I wonder who they would get to star as Barbra in Streisand: Life and Times?

I predict an Oscar nomination, or a Golden Globe win. Or at the very least, an MTV VMA.

Quote by dianna re. Caitlin Rose:
Well, it was Linda herself who said that you don't have to be original, just authentic. In that case, Caitlin is like a breath of fresh air--no Lady Gaga meat dresses for her (LOL). And she's also very big on Linda as well, which is amazing given that she's only 25.
Quote by ronstadtfanaz:
Well, there aren't so many of those around anymore, and even fewer with any talent beyond the gimmicks that dianna was talking about. Besides, I myself have to find it in my mind to reconcile "striking" with "unique", instead of just mindlessly bashing this particular generation.

I'm not bashing this generation (I prefer to bash 80's music though) but there is no one yet that excites me enough to get off my rocking chair and download their music. Back in the day it wasn't Linda Ronstadt's voice that moved me so much as it was Linda Ronstadt the woman, the persona. I just loved her to death. I knew the day would come when she wasn't recording and we would be left with just Linda Ronstadt the woman which for me is never a disappointment. At this point she is like family.

Speaking of 80's music or rather bashing an era or type of music. lol I know many people bashed disco during the 70's.. but I like a lot of it.. like this song n particular. I would have loved to have been around the legendary studio 54 era. Did Linda ever visit there?

Wasn't that a theme song to a Dracula movie? As a pop music fan I liked Disco too. It unfortunately devolved into terrible club music and left the spotlight (or at least my spotlight).

Ha Dracula? no clue, rob. I don't get today's music.. I'm okay with the 80's.. but after around the mid 90's, I too went into "rocking chair mode." lol
