Missed opportunities - Compare the marketing:
2019 Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice (Documentary) • CD or LP releases - No • Coffee-table book -No
2020 Herb Alpert is (Documentary) • CD or LP releases - Yes • Coffee-table book -Yes
I use the Herb Alpert documentary and its promotional material as an example of yet another opportunity that the Linda Ronstadt marketing team have missed. For example: when will Linda’s management offer her fans and the music buying public the products we desire. Yes, I know we had the Box Set release in 1999. But surely there are more audio rarities, alternate versions and/or live recordings to be released.
I feel “We've been cheated, been mistreated”. For example “Live in Hollywood” – has failed to provide the full concert on audio or DVD.
It begs the question “When will we be loved?”
2020 Linda Ronstadt and the Mocking Birds (Documentary).
This is a golden opportunity to issue a box set with all of Linda's Spanish recordings:
• A compilation of the 3 Spanish albums + the live Canciones De Mi Padre concert + miscellaneous Spanish Recordings not previously released included in an official collection.
• A coffee table book on Linda (chronicling aspects of her career showing photos of her in mariachi concerts showing wide variety of outfits she featured over the years).
Is this yet another missed opportunity?

Thanks for your thoughts, Aus. They could have done a soundtrack to the documentary and included the Troubador material and other rarer songs to accompany the documentary. There is more than enough material covered to do one, imo. eddiejinnj

OMG, cool!!!!! I thought we had established based on release date she wouldn't make it since it would have been for last year. So glad it somehow made some deadline date to be included in this year's noms. Now would this count as a Grammy for her or.....? Thanks, Boss!! eddiejinnj

Haven't seen any of the other films, but my gut feeling is that Sound of My Voice has more than a ghost of a chance of winning!

The most nominated artist this year is Beyonce, with nine nominations. So I think she might be a favorite in this category. I have not seen her movie though so I can't comment on it.
The bitching has already started this year over certain black artists, in this case, The Weeknd, not getting any nominations. And Nicki Minaj is already griping about losing Best New Artist to a white man back in 2012. (Don't Best New Artist winners usually go on to obscurity, so maybe she should be happy?) So maybe some voters might feel they need to vote for a woman of color instead of a white woman of Mexican heritage.

Quote by Partridge:
I'm going to be cautiously optimistic about THE SOUND OF MY VOICE's chances in the Best Music Film category. On the one hand, I know that Beyoncé has a lot of pull, but I don't recall her film having a theatrical release like Linda's, even if Linda's was relatively limited in scope. And Linda's documentary made a fairly tidy sum of between four and five million dollars with its limited release.
On the other hand, I am still keenly aware of when Linda was last nominated in a performance category at the Grammys. This was for Adieu False Heart, her album with Ann Savoy, in the Best Traditional Folk category back in 2006, and she was up against, among others, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions by Bruce Springsteen. When I saw this, I realized, and even expressed it on an earlier iteration of these forums, that it was likely that Springsteen, because he had always been a critical favorite and a "darling" of Grammy voters, would be the one to win; and sure enough, he did. I really hope Linda is able to beat the odds here, because it may well be the last time she is nominated for anything that involves her (though I'd not count out LINDA AND THE MOCKINGBIRDS next year).
As for the bitching about black artists getting snubbed--well, at the risk of sounding like a bigot, I really think it always ought to boil down to the quality of the work, and not the color of someone's skin or even their ethnicity. Art must always come first in matters like this, and political correctness should be left at home (IMHO).

There really should be a soundtrack album from this movie. It would justify putting on there rarities “Rambler Gambler” “Bury Me Beneath the Willow” “Shoop Shoop Song It’s In His Kiss” w the Muppets “Poor Wandering One” and heck, even “The Star Spangled Banner” plus they could add one song each from Jackson, Bonnie, Dolly, Emmy Lou, Aaron and it would be awesome.

Apart from "Rambler Gambler", I think there would have been various copyright issues involved. In any case, however, I am afraid that soundtrack ship has sailed.

RE: Beyonce's Noms; since she has so many maybe we can pull the movie one out. I say we like I am nominated. Goofy. Anyway, maybe also, the fact the the two artists are at definitely different stages of their career maybe Linda can pull it out for posterity sake. eddiejinnj
PS: I am not commenting on the quality of the movies as I have not seen the Beyonce doc.

The New York Times -- Still looking for things to watch? Go out on a limb with these titles. ‘Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice’ (2019) Stream it on HBO Max. The documentary filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (“The Celluloid Closet”) direct this biographical profile of the incomparable pop star, and the career in which she did just about everything: rock, pop, country, operetta, folk music, the works. It’s based on her memoir, and she tells much of her own story, in vivid detail and with good humor (and occasional assists from all-star friends and collaborators like Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt and Don Henley). The archival performance footage is thrilling — the film doesn’t just talk about the power of her vocals, but shows it — yet it’s more than your standard pop-doc, delving into the trickiness of navigating Ronstadt’s male-dominated world, and the pain of losing her ability to sing publicly after her diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. That’s frankly a tragedy, but she doesn’t treat it that way, and neither do the filmmakers. She seems thankful for the fun she had, and her energy and good cheer is infectious.

Seen this twice, bought the DVD. Very pleasing but, no mention of Andrew Gold and little on Linda's early years.
This movie is good as a "Who is..?" background documentary though. Reading Linda's book "Simple Dreams", magazine interviews & articles published through Linda's career and live or audio on YT can fill in for what is not mentioned.
Great to see early photos of young Linda, and those early videos of Linda. Maybe the anecdotes of Linda's friends & colleagues are the best parts. Its sobering though how old they all are, and lovely Linda is, illness apart, a septuagenarian herself.
"The Sound of My Voice" is great Linda Ronstadt #101 entertainment and I'm glad to have it in my library alongside all her albums. A bio-pic may be made one day about Linda, but not Ms Zellweger as Linda please!

Well, as we all know, Hollywood can be a fairly strange place. As for a bio-pic about Linda, however, I don't know that one can be made about Linda if we are talking about what would have to go in it, including the typical sordid "rock star" stuff (drugs; public intoxication, etc.), because there just wasn't much of anything of that sort in Linda's career. Even given all the legitimate complaints she made about having to perform in arenas and stadiums, and all the attendant pressure and media attention, Linda lived a relatively normal life, as well as a hugely fulfilling one, for herself and for us fans and her peers.
In terms of who can portray her? Well, we've all speculated a time or two about this, myself included. I seem to recall names like Mandy Moore, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, bandied about. They all seem to have a shot.
As for a possible director of such a film? Well, I would say Steven Spielberg--but then that's a personal bias, of course.

I have never seen that photo of young Linda before but recognise her facial features. A sassy looking teen then. It fits with pictures of Linda later in her life, and she's gone back to a blond shorter style now. Teen Linda has a very attitude-full expression, defiant, daring, sceptical... love it!..

What a beautifully written piece. Always wondered about that photo - being there are a bunch of teenage Linda photos and she looks nothing like that. The one with the guitar when she is sitting on the floor - legs crossed - same time completely different. My understanding is Linda never really graduated high school yet her family helped get her into U of A - which of course she fled for a career in Los Angeles.

What a brilliantly written blog by Chris Wells. He captures so much of what Linda's music evokes, why we relate to her, and also the part about false intimacy with performers. The treasure trove of albums he received as an adolescent transformed his life in many ways. One of the best things I've read in a long time. Thanks so much for posting this gem!

Yes, and near the end of his blog about Ronstadt he writes this:
Since then she has given us Linda and the Mockingbirds (documentary) and next year Feels Like Home: A Song for the Sonoran Borderlands (book) all the while continuing to mentor youth at Los Cenzontles. Is this a model for a life well lived or not?

A biopic not of Linda's whole life, though that would be fascinating, but of signifigant parts of it. My choices would be HLAW, Asylum, PoP to Trio, kids & afterwards. It could be more like the Judy Davis biopic of Judy Garland which was based on "My Life in Shadows" by JG's daughter. Linda's books & interviews provide the material.

Yes I'm probably the last person in this universe to see Sound Of My Voice. It had been on my radar for a long time, but I guess it's been a while since I've really had a good phase of playing Linda's music and so maybe wasn't ready for it. Thankfully the BBC had a Linda evening at the weekend and I recorded it. I loved it to be honest, I thought it was a magnificent documentary of Linda's career. My favourite contributors were JD, Ry and Karla, all of whom are artistes I have the highest regard for. Peter Asher: brilliant. Many others too, it was all so genuine and not just 'I've been asked to say something good so here it is'. Only very minor quibbles...Mad Love was not mentioned (I think) and I always feel was a really bold and brave album in Linda's career. And also I think Andrew Gold wasn't mentioned which was a shame, very integral to Linda's sound in the mid 70s. Anyway, I love it and spent the last ten minutes watching through floods of tears. Afterwards, as the modern expression goes, I was totally rinsed out.
*and Jackson's contribution as well, how could I forget... also one of my favourite people :-)

Alyn, I understand what you’re saying re: “Mad Love,” but the filmmakers had to make choices. From watching it you’d think she didn’t really do anything after “Don’t Know Much,” On the DVD release, there are bonus segments with Andrew Gold. It made me wonder if Andrew Gold’s family and/or estate is wanting his segments for a separate documentary project.
