Agree 100% with you about this inaccurate, trashy article, Rob. Linda's marital status is mentioned in the film and this guy also apparently has issues with single parenting. Anyhow, why is it a big deal that Linda never married? I'm single and so are many of my friends. Linda's viewpoint about marriage is right on target with my own feelings and beliefs about that institution. Once Women's Lib came along, I was totally onboard with being independent and making my own way in life. The "Donna Reed" days are long gone!!

Speaking of trashy, inaccurate stuff-The "author" of the screed says something like Linda was not the first female rock-n-roll star and mentioned Aretha, Dianna Ross, Connie Francis? Grace Slick and Janis Joplin. First I think the claim in the movie was she was the first female super star comparable to Jagger and Beyonce. However that little detail aside I wonder if any of the experts out there could offer some kind of rational metric comparing the aforementioned singers and Linda with respect to "stardom" Perhaps average crowd size during peak performing years, Record sales during their peak period etc.
The omission of Andrew Gold from the movie was a bit puzzling. For some reason I had the feeling that relations between Linda and Andrew were not the best prior to his passing which may be a factor in the omission. I may be completely wrong about this. I do, however, recall Linda pushing back rather vigorously on a claim made by Andrew where she said something like that he (Andrew) took disproportionate credit for one of the songs (Try Me Again I believe) that Linda wrote. There is also the distinct possibility that I may have imagined the whole thing and I am completely full of beans.

I never got married and I'm perfectly happy about it. I find that single men get judged more nowadays when it used to be the opposite.

How could you post that grotesque right wing hit piece?. I am Jewish and see the same parallels that Linda astutely points out. In fact the ratings were outstanding for CNN. The American Thinker, is not a legitimate publication, it is a propoganda arm of the alt-right. You're correct, The American Thinker is alt-right garbage. From Wikipedia - Right Wing Watch points out that American Thinker has published an excessively complimentary piece on a white nationalist, claimed women ruined public discourse by complaining about rape, and asserted that rainbow-colored Doritos are a "gateway snack to introduce children to the joys of homosexuality." I also don't believe that the ratings for the CNN broadcast of The sound of my voice were just okay. Her albums were all doing very well on the sales charts, so it's obvious that a lot of people watched it.

After the 5th (3 days ago I think to myself) when is the movie again being shown on CNN? Basically, is it scheduled beyond the 5th? I would stream it online. Thanks!!! eddiejinnj

I agree with all the comments about the American Thinker review. When Linda wades into divisive political waters (and rightly so) there will be some harsh reverb. This is mild in comparison to most others I have read from the right but they aren't "near as clever" as this carefully crafted, well thought out and effective propaganda piece. Frankly I marvel at how the writer accomplished it. My point in posting it (aside from historical/documentation purposes from this time period) is that it might wake some people up to political handiwork that is happening around us in every level of media. I posted the piece in the War Room as well and am not averse to its deletion in this thread but I would prefer that decision be left up to Tony. There are some salient points brought up within this review that aren't found in any others that I have seen anyway. We have been in these waters before and I suspect will find ourselves there again.

Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice has its own Wikipedia entry.Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My VoiceFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Ronstadt%3A_The_Sound_of_My_Voice
Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice is a 2019 documentary film about American singer Linda Ronstadt. It was directed by Oscar-winning filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.[3] It features interviews with many of Ronstadt's friends and fellow artists.
It had its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival on April 26, 2019. It won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2019 Provincetown International Film Festival.
Greenwich Entertainment, 1091 and CNN Films released Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice in theaters in September 2019.[4] It was released Digital HD from Amazon Video and iTunes on December 3, 2019, and on DVD and to Blu-ray on December 10, 2019.[5]

Synopsis Since bursting onto the music scene in 1967, Linda Ronstadt's extraordinary vocal range and ambition created unforgettable songs across rock, pop, country, folk ballads, American standards, classic Mexican music and soul. As the most popular female recording artist of the 1970s – with songs like “You're No Good,” “When Will I Be Loved,” and “Blue Bayou”—Ronstadt filled huge arenas and produced an astounding eleven Platinum albums. Ronstadt was the first artist to top the Pop, Country, and R&B charts simultaneously, she won 10 Grammy Awards on 26 nominations and attained a level of stardom the Tucson native never could have imagined.
In Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, Ronstadt is our guide through growing up in Tucson singing Mexican canciones with her family; her folk days with the Stone Poneys; living in Santa Monica, taking part in the burgeoning scene at The Troubadour and her reign as the “queen of country rock” in the ‘70s and early ’80s. She was a pioneer and champion for women in the male-dominated music industry; a passionate advocate for human rights, and had a high-profile romance with California Governor Jerry Brown. She stood up to the Musical Machine to record American Standards, to celebrate the songs that had ended up in the elevator and once again to claim her Mexican heritage and record Canciones De Mi Padre, although her record company thought it would ruin her career. It was a huge success both for the artist and in sales and charts. Ultimately, her singing voice was stilled by illness and forced her into early retirement but her music and influence remain timeless. With moving performance footage and appearances by friends and collaborators including Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice celebrates an artist whose desire to share the music she loved, made generations of fans fall in love with her — and the sound of her voice.

Reception On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 88% based on 50 reviews.[6] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 75 out of 100, indicating "Generally favorable reviews."[7]
Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the film "will make you fall in love with [Linda] all over again" and that it "will delight the singer's old fans and likely make her many new ones as well.”[8] Pete Hammond of Deadline wrote that it "expertly captures why Ronstadt was such a unique performer — a voice that could lend itself to any form of music she tried” and that the "performance footage that will knock your socks off and likely sell millions more albums from her vast catalog.”[9] Owen Gleiberman of Variety wrote, "Ronstadt’s voice yearns and crests with a freedom that never forgets its pain. She breaks your heart and heals it at the same time.”[10]

I had a chance to watch Linda Ronstadt on CNN I enjoyed it. When the show came to a close and they were talking about Linda having to give up her music due illness. I could tell Linda had to be heart broken not to be able to sing no more. Does Linda have other interest other then music just wondering.

Quote by terryarceneaux:
Apart from having to deal with her illness, which has actually been re-diagnosed as Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, which closely mirrors Parkinson's, Linda really does a lot of reading, although even that might be an issue since she has recently said that her eyesight seems to be going. As has been reported in the press, however, Linda's big thing, rightfully so because of her heritage, has been our so-called "president"'s barbaric treatment of migrants on the Mexican border.

No, unfortunately, it wasn't; and while I can't guess the cinematic cosmology of the Academy's documentary branch, I would suspect that both THE SOUND OF MY VOICE and another great documentary from 2019, APOLLO 11, were produced through the aegis of CNN and its relatively new film division. If that was indeed their thinking, then I believe they thought wrong, since both films had theatrical releases and both were highly successful in critical, commercial, and artistic terms.

As I said, I wouldn't know the Academy's thinking, but that's what it may have been. As for this year's Grammys, I suspect that it was released too late theatrically to qualify, which means it could be up for next year (but don't hold me to that)

The Documentary branch of the Academy is notorious for its "non-nominations" of films deemed worthy by critics and audiences/box office: Apollo 11 this year (which was great), Won't You Be My Neighbor last year (which pretty much won every other Best Documentary category there was at other awards), Paris Is Burning, Crumb, Hoop Dreams, The Thin Blue Line, and Fahrenheit 9/11.

This year's Grammys go from Oct. 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019. The movie was released on September 6th. So the movie is eligible for next year's Grammy's. That is good. Will look up the Oscars deadline. eddieinnj
PS: Seems the Oscar go by the whole previous calendar year and noms come out sometime in January.

Linda just passed 2 million followers on Spotify, very impressive. She only had 1.4 million last year, guess a lot of people discovered her from Live in Hollywood, CBS Sunday morning, The sound of my voice and the Kennedy center show.

This year's Grammys go from Oct. 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019. The movie was released on September 6th. So the movie is eligible for next year's Grammy's. I think the movie would have won this year had it been released a week earlier. Next year it may be forgotten unless someone pushed it for nomination. Plus it will be competing against new or upcoming documentaries on Taylor Swift, Tiny Tim, Mojo Nixon, and Billie Eilish.

I watched TSOMV again last night and I'm curious as to why the documentary didn't include Linda's transition from Country Rock to New Wave & Punk? her 1980's "Mad Love" Album, which was an important album too.. it seems like they skipped over it..

Quote by Dianna:
I can't give a definitive answer to that, since Mad Love was indeed an important album in Linda's discography (not to mention arguably the most controversial one as well, because critics wanted to keep Linda in "her place"). It may have ended up on the cutting room floor.
Now this is only my opinion, but either the radical "change of pace" that Linda instigated with that album didn't seem to matter to her fans, or else they wildly embraced the edginess of it. The only ones b****ing about it were the aforementioned critics, most of whom were always so snobby about her (and whom I will not name, because why should I give any attention to morons? [LOL]). Besides, it was an album that entered the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart far higher than even her biggest selling albums (at #5, peaking at #3), went Platinum within a few weeks of release, and spawned three Top 40 hit singles (the first two of which reached into the Top 10), so it kind of bled in a way into its predecessors.

I believe they based the content of the documentary largely on what Linda covered in her memoir, since they bought the rights to adapt it.
