"If you're going to San Francisco/be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. " With that one couplet, John Phillips defined an era and a city, but it was singer Scott McKenzie's voice that immortalized the song and became a one hit wonder whose sole hit remains a staple on the playlists of nearly every oldies station. McKenzie has died at the age of 73, joining the long list of celebrities who have passed this year. Will the city of San Francisco lower their flags as a gesture of respect and mourn his passing? I think they should. www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/20/scott-mckenzie-dead-dies-san-francisco-73_n_1809989.html

Yes, they probably ought to. The song was such an anthem for its time, positive and counter-cultural without being as strident as some others of the day.

Loved 60's music and especially 67-68. What a great time sans the war.

Ironic, then, that because we did have a (very unpopular) war going on, that that particular period was filled with such great music (IMHO).

Ironic, then, that because we did have a (very unpopular) war going on, that that particular period was filled with such great music (IMHO). I think the war and the American youth reaction to it had a lot to do with that. The whole thing was so stressful and we needed good music to help life along.
