I believe he was also in La Boheme with Linda.

Howard was in La Boheme and was her Rodolfo for most of her performances. She only sang with Gary Morris a few times.

Was there ever a recording made of La Boheme with LR? To opera afficiondos, isn't Penzance considered "Light Opera" while La Boheme is considered "real" heavy-duty opera (is it in Italian?)? LR is great on Penzance - wonder how she delivers on heavier Opera.

"Pirates" is, I suppose, what you would consider a comic opera, while "La Boheme" falls into more of the traditional Italian opera, not heavy like Giuseppe Verdi, but obviously tragic.

I posted -- under a separate thread -- the 1984 review from The New York Times -- of "La Boheme." From what I see, it was directed by Wilford Leach, who had also directed Linda in "Pirates of Penzance" in Central Park and on Broadway as well as the 1983 film. Also, it had adapted lyrics, so it was not sung in the original Italian. I had a Gary Morris cassette tape that featured one of his solo songs from "La Boheme."

There is no doubt that it was recorded by the Public Theatre. They gave snippits of it to the TV stations at the time to show clips when it opened. Nothing was ever released, these things normally are not. The NY Times did not give it a great review but it was loved by the fans and sold out for every performance. Everyone walked out of those performances awed by Linda. Now as "pure opera" I doubt if Linda could be compared to Maria Callas but that wasn't the point. She did great and it was a great hit! Wish we could get the Public Theatre to release it.

Kevin, I did post The New York Times review as a separate thread to show the cast list when Howard McGillin was mistakenly identified as having played opposite Linda as her love interest. That role was double cast with Gary Morris and David Carroll (who would go on to star in "Grand Hotel" and then die during its run). McGillin played a different character. Here is the link to the thread in the same part of the Forum -- www.ronstadt.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=549
