wow, I would have never recognized her. I know some people makes those comments about Linda too. but honestly, I haven't seen much of Hellen in years.. She looks like she has aged gracefully and seems quite happy.

My kind of person! What a great bio. Seems to be similar to today's Linda in many positive ways. Those of us in the metaphysical world were already aware of Helen's "other" life away from stardom. A genuinely good person and shining star in this world.
Thanks so much for posting this.
Active in community affairs, Reddy served as the state of California's Parks and Recreation Commissioner for three years. In 2002, she retired from performing and moved from her longtime residence in Santa Monica, California back to her native Australia, living first on Norfolk Island, before taking up residence in Sydney. There, she was a practising clinical hypnotherapist, and Patron of the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists. In April 2008, Reddy was reported to be living "simply and frugally off song royalties, pension funds, and social security...[renting] a 13th-floor apartment with a 180-degree view of Sydney Harbour." Her apartment had been recently appraised, causing Reddy concern over its future affordability; however, the New York-based landlord learned his tenant's identity and wrote her: "I had no idea it was the Helen Reddy who was living in my unit. Because of what you have done for millions of women all over the world, I will not sell or raise your rent. I hope you'll be very happy living there for years to come."
See, there are many good and fine people in the world.....

To say nothing of "Angie Baby"!
Maybe it was the treacle of "You and Me Against the World" that lingered on their critical tongues. Too bad. Reddy had an original sound.
As for her post-musical life, good for her. Glad to hear it.

I recall many critics referred to Helen's music as "housewife rock" (which they also used to describe the music of the Captain and Tenille) and I think they meant the term as an insult and not as a compliment. I recall Helen did a country oriented album circa the late 70s or early 80s which was probably the bright idea of her record label (Capitol), which met with the scorn of the country critics, who were always hostile to rock musicians crossing over to country. They clearly held no love for pop artists doing the same and especially one that was a true "foreigner." Country music could only be made from someone who was from the US, preferably someone from the deep south. She did a few more albums after that but can't recall any of them getting favorable reaction from the critics. Some artists could never win with the critics and Helen was one of them, unfotunately.

Helen Reddy is beginning to make some appearances again. I think I recall seeing that in a Mark Islam tweet. As for You and Me Against the World, I always liked the song, altho the spoken beginning and ending I could have done without.
I ran across a current unretouched photo of Helen Reddy a few weeks ago, and it was something of a shock, as I had not seen a new photo of her at all for decades. But she looks very well for 70. Her current professional photos look very good. I think after taking ten years off, she is back in the business in a limited way.

Very cool Rick. Thanks for finding this.
Wasn't Helen one of the hosts of the old tv show Solid Gold?

Yes, I do recall her doing a stint on that show. Those were the days. Huh? Helen hosted "Solid Gold?" I don't remember that. I remember Marilyn McCoo and that squirrely comic Marty something or other (who was always laughing at his own jokes and taking forever to get to his punch lines - talk about a comic who sucked!) but don't remember Helen ever hosting "Solid Gold." "Midnight Special," yes but SG, no. Of course, I stopped watching SG after a while because of the aforementioned not-so-funny comic, so I might have missed her on there if she hosted it later on.

Maybe I am thinking Dionne Warwick. I do remember Helen hosting something around that time.

Maybe I am thinking Dionne Warwick. I do remember Helen hosting something around that time. I recall Dionne Warwick hosting "Solid Gold" but can't recall if she was before or after Marilyn McCoo. As for Helen, I believe she started hosting the "Midnight Special" permanently in 1974, after that show had mostly had a series of revolving hosts. I was always curious if they ever offered Linda the chance to host the show, as I recall whoever was hosting supposedly picked the other guests that were on the show with them. Linda as host would've been interesting to have seen for the acts she would've invited. Linda was also on the very first "Midnight Special" in 1972 with John Denver hosting. Curiously, Helen Reddy was not the first choice for hosting the MS on a permanent basis. The producers wanted the Bee Gees because that group's shows for them had generated some fairly good ratings. But, they turned the gig down because they wanted to focus on their music. And the funny thing about Helen was I can't recall her hosting any MS show prior to getting the gig. She was a good choice for the show, though.

I must need to increase my coconut oil daily dosage as I don't remember any host on any of those shows except Wolfman Jack? Or was that yet another show? (omg... I am turning into my grandparents) I do hope to be happy in my old age or at least not to know any better.

I am turning into my grandparents) I do hope to be happy in my old age or at least not to know any better. The Wolfman was like the co-host for the shows but each show (in the pre-Helen Reddy days) was introduced with the phrase (after running through the other guests who were on the show) "...and your host(s) for the Midnight Special...(whoever the artist in question was)," who would then kick off the show with one of their songs. Wolfman Jack was always on each and every show but I think his role was sometimes more like an announcer than host. Quite frankly, I liked their idea of not having a permanent host but I think NBC simply thought the show should have a permanent host rather than a revolving door of guest hosts. I think the reason for that was that one of the shows was a show dedicated to the upcoming guest hosts. Each upcoming guest host performed a song and announced who would be appearing with them on that show. They taped on something like Monday or Tuesday, just a week or so before it aired on Friday night. One of the upcoming guest hosts was Jim Croce, who then died in the plane crash before the guest hosts episode aired. NBC went ahead and aired the episode but made sure to announce that the episode had been filmed prior to Croce's death. As if it needed to be said but then again, some people might not have heard the news or may have thought the show was produced earlier in the day.

Back to Helen Reddy for a sec:
One of the reasons I suspect the "highbrow" critics didn't take her too seriously back in the day is that one of her most prominent appearances was as a singing nun (yes, you read it right) in the 1974 disaster movie AIRPORT 1975. It kind of took their minds off "Delta Dawn" and "Angie Baby" (although, oddly, the latter was a hit at the time of Helen's singing nun appearance on celluloid).

Where is Helen playing in 2013?

Where is Helen playing in 2013? My tickets for Helen Reddy and Karla Bonoff are for the Newberry Opera House (Newberry, South Carolina). If I'm not mistaken, the auditorium only seats 400 people. I've seen a few concerts there- Joan Baez, Kathy Mattea, Guy Clark, Patty Loveless, Elizabeth Cook. Joan took advantage of the acoustics to come to the front of the stage and sing unamplified. I played an April Fool joke on a friend at work. He is a big ONJ fan so I copied the code for their website and changed the Lettermen date to Olivia Newton-John and displayed the fake website when he came to my office. He dashed out to call and get tickets and the lady at the box office laughed at him and said there must be a mistake on the website and she would get them to fix it.

My April Fool joke came true. This friend called me last week and asked if I had hacked into the official Olivia website. It had her listed as playing the Newberry Opera House, though there was no mention on the Opera House website. So I called and got the info and she is indeed playing this 400-seat venue. I haven't made a decision to go yet. Even though Olivia is taking a huge hit in her fee, the tickets are still priced at $125 each, and I am only a very casual fan. Still, for a chance to see Newton-John in such an intimate setting, I think $125 would be a good deal for a die-hard fan.
"Tickets are on sale now. Price is $125 plus a $1 per ticket facility fee and a $3 Per order handing charge. Please call the box office at 803-276-6264"

Please call the box office at 803-276-6264" Olivia will be appearing in early October at one of the tribal casinos here, but ticket prices will be a little cheaper than the $125 for the tickets in your area, $49 for the cheapest seats and $64 for the most expensive seats. Of course, the tribal casino's theater where Olivia will be playing seats about 2500 people, so that may be why the tickets are cheaper. Funny as it may seem to say but I'd rather pay the $125 for the more intimate setting to see Olivia, although I recall the tribal casino's theater/stage where Olivia will be playing seemed to be a pretty intimate venue. My ex-girlfriend and I saw Lee Ann Womack there and even from the seats that were the furtherest back, one still seemed pretty close to the stage. Olivia's last appearance where I live was in 2004 on this very day (September 22), and I was at that particular concert. My sister had bought me tickets to Olivia's concert for my birthday, which had been the week before. The price she paid for the tickets was the same as the top ticket price being charged by the tribal casino, but the seats were in the nosebleed section. The tickets for the floor seats closest to the stage was only twenty dollars more. Curiously, Olivia's 2004 concert was never promoted here but all the seats were sold out. I guess most people heard about the concert through word of mouth. It was a reasonably good show though Olivia was only on stage about an hour, which was kind of a sore point with me as she did other concerts around that same time where she was on stage for more than two hours.

I think my Linda April Fool prank was that she was doing a cruise from San Fran to Cabo San Lucas and would be doing a different concert each night- one hits night, one jazz night, and on night 3 a Stone Poneys reunion where they would be doing a variety of folk/country rock stuff. One fan from Australia was particularly incensed as he immediately made vacation plans. Actually this would have been a great idea, but the seed planted did not grow to fruition.
