Hi guys! I'm new to the forum and I just wanted to say hi. I'm a big fan of Linda's for over ten years now. Nice to see such a great website devoted to her.
I was curious about Linda's Tony nomination for PIRATES. I was very little when the show was a hit on Broadway, but how was her performance generally viewed by the public? Did it gain her a new level of respect among those who thought that she was only a rock and roll singer? Obvioulsy the theater wing fell in love with it, since they nominated her. Was she offered other big name Broadway shows?
And did she actually attend the awards show? I wanted someone to post Lauren Bacall's win on Youtube so I can see if she's in the audience as her name is announced, but no one has. Did she perform on the telecast?

She received rave reviews, and she stayed with the production for about a year. I don't think it was that much of a surprise to those who knew of her vocal ability. Us diehard fans could really see the growth in her vocals from doing Pirates. Listen to the albums before she did it, then listen to Get Closer which she release after leaving the show and it's obvious. She did la Boheme a couple years later. It was a very limited run another Joseph Papp production, not on Broadway. She was so damn cute in Pirates, and those who only knew her from her radio hits were surprised I think. In 1988 she brought her Mariachi show to Broadway and I think it ran for close to a month. Welcome to the board. Many of us have been members from the start back in 97. It's always great to see younger fans getting hooked.

Just a minor clarification...the show ran for three years. LR may have stayed on for only one. I believe Karla DeVitto and Robbie Benson eventually replaced Linda and Rex Smith.

I did not see "Pirates" when it was first in Central Park but did see it when it was at the Uris (now Gershwin) Theatre on Broadway. I was 22/23 at the time. I remember being blown away by the notes she sang in "Poor Wand'ring One." I was also so glad that they added the song "Sorry Her Lot" for her. It was such a departure from having seen her perform in concert singing out "Heatwave," "You're No Good" and "Try Me Again." Am not sure exactly how long she stayed with the Broadway run. As was often the case, with "Pirates" being so successful in New York, a Los Angeles cast was announced to play at the Music Center. Pam Dawber of TV's "Mork and Mindy" was Mabel and Barry Bostwick ("Spin City") was the Pirate King. Am 99% sure of this.. Pam Dawber took ill and on the last night of the Los Angeles' run, Linda once again stepped into the role of Mabel. After Linda left the New York cast, and Karla DeVito took over the role of Mabel there, Estelle Parsons also left and was replaced by Kaye Ballard. In the documentary "Broadway: The Golden Age," Kaye Ballard talks about how different it was appearing on Broadway in "Pirates" in the 1980s compared to what it was like when she first started out in shows like "The Golden Apple."
