Just got home from The Ace Theater in downtown Los Angeles and seeing "A Tribute to the Music of Linda Ronstadt."
First off, Linda was not there.
When I got there around 7:35 p.m. there was a security line to get into the theater. There were tables with silent auction items. The lobby was VERY crowded and when I went up to one of the silent auction tables the opening bid was $500. Unfortunately, too rich for my blood. But I hope they raised a lot of funds for Parkinson's Research.
Am going to do my best to remember all of the songs sung and by which performers. My order might be a little off. If anyone else was there can help out with the list, please do so. Thank you. For some reason right now, I am fuzzy on what Brandy Clark sang and what Lucius sang solo on. Also, Gaby Moreno had an excellent guitarist accompanying here, David ______, and he came back later in the program. Sorry for the sketchiness of this but I did not take notes. It's all from what I am able to remember. There was no song from the standards projects, however, a video package that started the evening ended with Linda's recording of "When You Wish Upon a Star." It sounded incredible in the theater.
"Different Drum" -- Sara Watkins accompanied by Sean Watkins
"You're No Good" -- Grace Potter
"Rogaciano El Huapanguero" -- Gaby Moreno
"Mad Love" -- Dawes
"Crazy Arms" -- Brandy Clark with J.D. Souther
"Faithless Love" -- J.D. Souther
"When Will I Be Loved" -- Lucius
(Before "Lover's Return," there was a video tribute by Dolly Parton talking about her love for Linda and Emmylou and working on the "Trio" projects)
"Lover's Return" -- I'm With Her (Sara Watkins, Aiofe O'Donovan, Sarah Jarosz) "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" -- David Lindley
"Heart Like a Wheel" -- Maria Muldaur
"Willin' " -- Jackson Browne
"Don't Know Much" -- Aaron Neville
"Silver Threads and Golden Needles" -- Grace Potter
"Adieu False Heart" -- Aiofe O'Donovan and Gaby Moreno
"Desperado" -- Don Henley
ENCORES
"Blue Bayou" -- Sara Watkins, Maria Muldaur, Grace Potter, Gaby Moreno, Aiofe O'Donovan, Sara Jarosz, Brandy Clark
"Heatwave" -- Sara Watkins, Maria Muldaur, Grace Potter, Jackson Browne, Brandy Clark, Lucius, Brandy Clark, Gaby Moreno, Aiofe O'Donovan, Sarah Jarosz, Sean Watkins

Glad you were well enough to go after all. What a line up!
Really bizarre night. Something in the air. Residual Ronstadt. I listen to talk radio all the time and after dark there is interference galore between stations and all night I have been hearing many different Ronstadt songs faintly fade in and out including Different Drum twice and some Mexican songs. I hope she is ok.
Was this event filmed?

Rob, thank you. I rested all afternoon and at about 6:30 decided to try to make it. I am really happy I did. I didn't notice the types of cameras around that would be used, say, for a PBS special. I did notice guys with what looked like TV news video cameras kneeling on the floor to get some footage. I noted this particularly during Aaron Neville's performance. The people who put together this event did an incredible job lining up this roster of talent.

I would think it made the la news both tv and print. erik good at finding them. I will look. Also, did anybody hear that Linda DID the narration for "Peter and the Wolf" in SF yesterday? I would think that would make the media also? eddiejinnj

I saw indications that it would be live-streamed on YouTube, but perhaps others would know better than I do how that all is supposed to work.

Tony, thanks for link. I tried it and what it brought up for me was the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction.
However, I found that a YouTuber with the ID "CalVid" has 6 videos from last night. Here is the Aaron Neville video --

Seems to be something wrong with the sound system and feedback at least at the beginning. Aaron seems to be struggling. It's wonderful all of these people turned out for Linda. These are some of her REAL friends. I am hoping she knows that.

One thing I just remembered. When J.D. Souther was on stage with Brandy Clark, she said something like "God Bless Linda, wherever she is." I believe she meant that in an innocent way, but it could have been interpreted to mean she is not on this Earth. So, very quickly, J.D. Souther snapped, "I know exactly where Linda is."

If you search for Linda Ronstadt tribute, and filter this week on YouTube, there are performances by Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Grace Potter, and Maria Muldaur, among others..

Her narration of "Peter and the Wolf" was in the morning at Davies Hall in SAN Francisco. I speculated here on the Forum (wishful thinking on my part) that Linda could do the narration in the morning, fly down to L.A. and then attend the tribute. Erik didn't think that was likely. Erik was correct.

Quote by Rick:
It would certainly have been hard for her to pull off even if she had wanted to do it, and even though it is only about a 40-minute flight from San Francisco down to here. But I'm pretty sure John Boylan or someone in her immediate circle has let her know about how much love she got at last night's concert.

Hey, Did anyone notice that the lead singer in Dawes is wearing the exactt same jacket and striped shirt as Linda wore in the original Mad Love. Ideo? Cool!

Looking forward to (hopefully) seeing more of the performances, particularly Lucious on "When Will I Be Loved" and Maria on "Heart Like a Wheel."
I imagine it was a scheduling issue, but Emmylou's absence from this lineup was notable.
As was no Jimmy Webb songs!
Still, even reading about the participants, the remarks made, the songs sung, I can tell this was a heartfelt tribute.

Rob -- I was really impressed with her. She also did a wonderful job with Aiofe O'Donovan on "Adieu False Heart. When I got home on Sunday night, I made sure to mention on my Instagram post about the event -- http://instagram.com/p/BN6azyVDy51 When Sean Watkins introduced Gaby the first time she came out, he mentioned that she is up for a Latin Pop Grammy.

Yes, for her album Ilusion. She also won for Best New Artist at the 2013 Latin Grammys. She's someone to look out for, that's for sure (IMHO).

Some of us can leave this world with comfort knowing that many Linda Ronstadt inspired artists will be left behind to carry on. It's a good feeling.

was wondering if I'd run into anybody from the forum there but didn't. I attended with Rosemary Butler & a group of 22 others from our musical community and we all occupied several rows in the balcony. When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1990, I had a ticket to see Linda's Cry Like A Rainstorm Tour at the Universal Amphitheatre back when there was such a thing; Rosemary was in Linda's band. Shortly after that tour ended, I met Rosemary at a class she was teaching at UCLA Extension, and we've been friends ever since. Bob Carpenter of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band joined our party at last minute, and he was the one who told us the reason it was so late getting started was that nobody could locate surprise guest Aaron Neville who was coming from an earlier gig that wasn't in Los Angeles. In the lobby, I ran into Vanessa Gold, Andrew's first wife, and I commented that such an event would be bittersweet for her given how crucial Andrew was, and she agreed that yes, it was bittersweet. Vanessa was with Sherry Goffin Kondor, who's now managing her mother Carole King. Henry Diltz was there photographing the show but I didn't get to say hello. It seemed that the show got started the better part of an hour late, but once the music began it was all terrific, selection-wise. For me, an unexpected favorite was Dawes' Mad Love. Between Gaby Moreno's cancion, and Adieu False Heart and the Trio 2 song, I'd completely forgotten about Blue Bayou, hadn't missed it at all until it was one of the encores. I remembered Andrew Gold & Kenny Edwards quite a lot throughout the evening.

Quote by ronstadtfanaz: Yes, and I've been saying for quite a while that Linda probably has had a much greater influence on female artists of the last four generations than anyone else, but that it doesn't get nearly the attention that someone like Madonna or Rihanna gets. Anyway folks, how about another media publication piling on the love for Linda?: bestclassicbands.com/linda-ronstadt-tribute-concert-12-13-16/

The ladies of Lucius did a killer When Will I Be Loved. Took them a few bars to find themselves, but boy when they did... What I really appreciated about their tribute song is that it lifted the arrangement -- instrumental and vocal -- and, using that framework, created its own magic, with Lucious' voices glorifying Linda's phrasing. These are now popping up on YouTube.
