I am preparing an outline of the career high points and important events in the life of Linda Ronstadt.
What do you consider the essential moments or details that should be touched on?

I would hope "highlights" are not always considered $$$ makers. Ronstadt made some of her best albums AFTER 1990 and her voice didn't reach it's peak till a few years AFTER 1990. Please keep that in mind, and if you doubt this, listen to the albums that came after and if you didn't see her live after that year make sure you ask those who have and investigate live performances on YouTube after that year. Good luck on your project and hope to see what you come up with.

No, a career includes not only the successes but also the failures.
A biographical outline would include these topics-
1. Early family life- music endeavors before leaving for LA- family history 2. The years with the Stone Poneys, getting a hit just as they broke up. 3. Years struggling as a left-of-center country artist 4. Formation of the Eagles 5. Success with Don’t Cry Now, stardom with Heart Like a Wheel, superstardom with Simple Dreams 6. Queen of rock 7. Pirates of Penzance 8. Controversy over appearances in South Africa 9. Genre-hopping in the 1980s- orchestral standards, mariachi, Trio, Cry Like a Rainstorm 10. Adopted children. 11. Great albums of the 1990s that did not ignite commercially 12. Trivial remarks in Las Vegas turned into a major controversy because of distorted right-wing media coverage.
What am I missing here?

The many musical acts she has worked with over the years: Emmylou, Dolly, Gram Parsons, Hoyt Axton, Cash, Andrew (Gold), Karla Bonoff, Ann Savoy, Anna and Kate McGarrigle, the (Nitty Gritty) Dirt Band - this list is so large, it could be a book in and of itself. Her own attempts at songwriting, concert sellouts or standing room only...

I would add your trying to avoid the phrase "genre-hopping." It makes her sound like a dilettante when, in fact, the rock/country/standards/mariachi were all personal expressions of music that was a part of her upbringing.
Linda is a product of not only of her diverse musical home life, but -- like most of us -- of Great American Radio and is, therefore, a genuine American singer, representative of the incredible variety of musical forms in American culture.
She was the cultural/musical equivalent of an iPod on shuffle before there was an iPod.

Human-Pod on Shuffle, would be a great title for a compilation of all the types of music she has done.

Here are some other notable highlights of her career:
June 21, 1969: Her first appearance on the Johnny Cash Show, and thus her first exposure to the country music audience.
December 7, 1971: Her debut performance at the Palomino in North Hollywood, which was in its day the premiere C&W nightclub on the planet.
March 1973: Linda and Neil Young join Gram Parsons and his Fallen Angels onstage at Liberty Hall in Houston, and Linda meets, and becomes instant friends with, Emmylou Harris.
October 31, 1973: Her debut at the then-recently-newly-opened Roxy in West Hollywood, at a time when the trajectory of her career was beginning to move upward.
September 28, 1975: Linda, Jackson Browne, and the Eagles headline a big outdoor shindig inside the confines of Anaheim Stadium, which attracts upwards of 50,000 (YIPE!!)
September/October 1977: Twelve straight sold-out concerts at the Universal Amphitheatre in L.A. in support of her album Simple Dreams, a record for that venue that isn't likely to be broken any time soon, if ever.
October 14, 1977: Linda sings the National Anthem just prior to Game 3 of the World Series between the Dodgers and the New York Yankees at Dodger Stadium in front of 58,000.
