Frequently since she first came around ten years ago, Norah has been compared to Linda, sometimes favorably at Linda's expense (as here). That said, however, while she may have rightly been seen as a big deal back in 2002, the fact that she showed up on so many "tribute" albums and shows sometimes without any real rhyme or reason for doing so meant that, at least for me anyway, her music and her voice got both old and bland unusually fast.
As awful as those swipes are, I think we should come to expect it from these people. In any case, I'd ignore it. Norah Jones isn't of Linda Ronstadt's caliber.

"...Ronstadt’s cool, jazzy-folk singer (or folky jazz singer) vibe..."
Really?
Sounds like one of those made-up descriptions critics use to bolster the theme of their reviews. In other words, he surely wouldn't have used this description if he were reviewing a country album and using Linda as comparison.
On the other hand, he does have a "little crush" on our girl -- even as he feels the need to kick some sand in her face. There really isn't much relevance to roping Linda into this review. There are very few, if any, actual similarities between Ronstadt and Jones -- except that they are both female and neither one of them raps. They don't look alike or sound alike.

well said erik. i have no idea how horah's albums do. i know she had the one song. cool album cover for her new one. looks like something linda would have done early 80's including the style of the cover. i have compared songs jones has recorded that linda has as well and i agree with erik. we may be a little subjective here lol. also, not that i wanted the negative references of linda, there is just enough good to make a few check out linda if they are not fully aware of the breadth of her career. you know the old saying there is no negative press. eddiejinnj

Quote by richwar:
I think we've seen this happen a lot that many critics will utilize a straw man (or woman, in this case) argument in order to prop up a slam that, on the surface, really doesn't have much merit. Norah works in a lot of different musical areas from Linda; and the two of them are almost three decades apart in age, though on this latter point that can be said of numerous female singers who have followed Linda's muse. I'm not sure where that critic got his information from, but either he got it wrong or he's, deliberately or not, misinterpreting it.
There's no question that Norah has been a critical "darling", and her albums have done obscenely well in a sea of mediocrity during the last ten years. But it's important to be objective as well; and we know that a lot of critics have a tendency not to be objective. Norah's a case in point (IMHO).

Though Jones fans are not unfamiliar with her minimalist approach to her music, there is something oddly personal about this outing; a collection of songs that sounds like a conversation between thin apartment walls. The result is something so confessional, as listeners we sometimes feel we should not be overhearing it at all. So we press our ear even closer to the stereo.
Ok. Talk about another idiot critic trying too hard to be clever. I would have to say this about Norah Jones:
"sometimes Less is Less"
She isn't even in the same league as Linda. Just listen to both versions of Blue Bayou. I am sure Norah herself would agree. I have always had a problem with critics and amateurs (but especially critics) cutting down one artist to build another up. I cannot think of any cover that Linda has recorded that I like better by someone else or even the original artist. That makes her quite unique and not just "any old singer." Linda equals or bests all of them.
Is there a music critic school that teaches these morons to use techniques like this?
and another thing! I think someone pressed their ear just a wee bit too close to the stereo. and don't most people have two ears?

Norah's new album is quite interesting and a departure from her "sound". Its rather good. The previous album of duets was really awful - I couldn't make it through the whole album without slipping parts or whole tracks.
No comparison to Linda at all though in my opinion.
