Before the days of the internet I wandered into a store and saw this CD on the rack, no idea it had been released. Looking at the tracklist I was so excited, but hearing it initially I was disappointed. I really wanted to hear Linda belting Be My Baby, Baby I Love You, Dedicated To The One I Love .... however again, I've grown to love this for its quirkiness, imagination and musical interpretation.
I'm pleased this was recognised at the Grammys and that she had a comment from Queen that they loved We Will Rock You and had envisaged it as a lullaby ...... such a clever idea.
I know its one of those love / hate records though ..... but I was pleasantly surprised to play it for a friend who is a musical "snob" and real traditionalist - not liking covers in any way - but he loved it. I've also bought it for many friends with babies

I know that this is not highly regarded among Linda fans, but I have a soft spot for it, as Linda autographed it for me, during her bookstore tour in 96. Linda also song a few songs in the store accompanied only by a harpist, and her version of In My Room was lovely. The Grammy was also nice; I am always glad for Linda to have recognition.

In My Room would be a standout on any album. It is better than the original and classic Linda.

I had the same initial reaction as you, Sean.
What finally opened it up for me was randomly hearing "Goodnight." Since then, while I don't play the entire album, I do love it when separate tracks pop up on shuffle. "Goodnight, baby." Oh, baby!
I thought the Queen track was brilliant, but I know others loathe the idea of it (ahem, Erik...).

I think it was a cool way to do a children's album especially a very young child to be lulled to. For the very young, it is the soothing music and words done the way that Linda did them that make these cool lullabies. My fav track is "Goodnight". Absolutely gorgeous. eddiejinnj

Quote by Richard W:
Yes, and after 19 years, my view still stands. Part of this is due to having to turn the station anytime I hear the original (because I have heard it ad nauseum in my life), but also because (and I don't think I have ever said this about anything Linda has ever done) I find the idea of turning it into a "lullaby" insulting.
On the other hand, I really can't find fault in hers and Aaron Neville's version of "Brahms' Lullaby" (part of whose melody, for those who keep up on classical music, also shows up in first movement the composer's Second Symphony).

I am working on a concept album turning 15 Green Day songs into lullabies.

It's been mentioned before, but Brian May of Queen claimed to have actually written the song as a lullaby (with its rocking chair rhythms), and contacted Linda on her perspicacious interpretation.

Congratulations Richard, on behalf of the academy, I am honored to award you the golden thesaurus for the word of the month. Sincerely, Bon Moe, head (and only) lackey

But I didn't use a thesaurus, I swear!
I'd still like to thank the Academy...

I like We Will Rock You, I think using the pacifier and heartbeat in replacement for the percussion is so imaginative.....

I always listen to soft music before I go to sleep. I've listened to this cd a lot in the last 19 years--except for one song on it: We Will Rock You... It's just not a relaxing, sleepy-time song, no matter how softly sung lol.

I've listened to five Linda Ronstadt albums this year ( Cry Like A Rainstorm-Howl Like The Wind, Mas Canciones, Frenesí, Winter Light and Feels Like Home) and I know them like the back of my hand now. Dedicated To The One I Love is the album I'm up to at the moment and I was aware that it is different to other albums and that Linda wouldn't belting out any of the songs. It's too early for me to review the album (I doubt there will be anything negative about the album though) I own all of Jewel's albums and she is one of my favourite artists. Two of her albums ( Lullaby and The Merry Goes 'Round) were aimed at kids but I actually enjoyed them both. I'm aware I'm in a minority when I speak about Queen but I'm not a fan and I don't like any songs I've heard by them. I don't like Freddie Mercury's voice and think 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is one of my most disliked songs of all time. There are many "Big names" that I've never been able to see the appeal over (Bee Gees, Madonna, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Adele) and Queen are one of them. Yeah there will be a fan base for pretty much every artist and different amount of album sales but to the level of success Queen (and the other artists I mentioned) I just cannot see what the appeal is. So Linda's version of 'We Will Rock You' just cannot get the criticism from me.

I forgot to ask (which has probably been asked so many times and is also probably well known, except to me! Ha ha) who is the baby on the front cover and back cover?

I too have an autographed copy of DTTOIL. Mark Islam got it for "For Michael, Love Linda Ronstadt. I treasure it and love the album. I thought the boy on cover was Danny Ferrington's son. I could be confused.

I have loved this recording from the moment I heard it. I have given it as a gift several times to parents of newborns.

IN MY ROOM is one of Linda's best songs ever. She took a lot of heat for this record yet she won another Grammy so it couldn't have been all that bad. She created what she intended to do and it worked exactly as it was meant. The kids that first heard this album are just about 20 years old now and unlike their peers they know and appreciate Linda Ronstadt.

I was lucky enough to meet Linda during her Dedicated tour, and she sang a few songs including In My Room at various book stores during that time. Her pristine version of that song accompanied by a harpist is one of my treasured memories ..

I've listened to this album quite a lot this week and I while I do like it, I think it would be my least favourite album of Linda's. I understand this "lullaby" album was aimed at kids but if Valerie Carter wasn't singing on the album I wouldn't see anything (other than the actual song choices) that was childlike. I found similarities to Enya on a couple of songs. I'm not familar with Valerie Carter's voice so I don't know if she usually sings in such a childlike way but she definitely does here.
I don't understand why the picture of Linda on the inside couldn't have been used as the album cover. But hey, there you go...

It is a nice picture of her. I agree it could have been the cover but it is a quote concept album like her Christmas album. The inside pic of her there is just gorgeous. It is Linda again, imo, putting art before ego. eddiejinnj

In a sense that is true about the ego. Kosh said Linda never did more than give him a suggestion at the beginning of some of the album concepts and she trusted him to do everything on his own and make the decisions. Kosh said that of all his clients over the decades that Linda Ronstadt was the nicest of all to work with and an equally nice person (I am paraphrasing). I was going to say Linda was the easiest but thought that may be interpreted the wrong way. I also heard the photo was of the son of one of the artistic team but couldn't find the quote. Maybe it was Danny's son if he had a son. It sure makes sense to me to put the kid on the cover. It certainly attracted attention. He looks like a little old man-child.

So is the baby on the cover Linda, one of her adopted children, or anyone related to her?

oh well, I'm on my own... I tried to like the album and listened to it numerous times with open ears, but .... not for me. I'm beginning to think that my full appreciation of Linda's music travels through three narrow bands of her career - and those three periods speak to me so much more than any other music I love (okay maybe on a par with Little Feat and Frank Sinatra :-)and I am entirely happy enjoying it. I've bought and tried all the music from all her career, and given it time, but I can't like it just because it's Linda, some things can't be forced. (for those interested, for me it's the Hasten Down The Wind to Mad Love time, the Nelson Riddle projects, and the Spanish / Mexican albums, and the live recordings from these times)
And... I'm totally astonished to hear that the original intention of We Will Rock You was a lullaby.... really? Look at the lyrics... or was this before the verses were written. As a massive Queen fan from the first album, I vividly remember going out to buy the new single We Are The Champions / We Will Rock You and was somewhat dismayed by the very first hearing that they had resorted to songs that were effectively football crowd chants, after all the creativity that had gone before. Sure, Day At The Races wasn't a completely terrific album and the day they thought John Deacon's songs were strong enough to be included on albums was a nail in the coffin. But of course commercially an upward turn. Sigh. :-) Still, in my opinion, Night At The Opera and Sheer Heart Attack are truly amazing and unique albums.

I have never seen the inner sleeve photos on Linda's Lullaby album or her Christmas album. Can someone post those photos? Thanks.
