Boy, did Jann Wenner really waste his time (and ours too) in inducting this half-a**ed band if their half-a**ed singer is too chickens*** to come to the ceremony.

Why the animosity towards Mr. Rose? His reasoning seems sound to me (based on the article) although he was a bit too nice to Wenner and his cronie corrupted rrhof in my opinion.

Quote by dianna: And it doesn't seem like Axl Rose has. Either that, or he's still a druggie. Am not sure about wading in here..but here goes. When I read this item on The New York Times' website, I posted it here without comment. What came to mind for me was that here was someone whose career I'd not really followed other than knowing the band's name. But I knew that the band was hugely popular. Again, I knew that there had been problems but never paid close attention because I couldn't honestly name a Guns 'n' Roses' song. But Guns 'n' Roses was immensely popular in its day. I also had heard/read about Axl Rose's problems, but didn't pay a lot of attention to them. Here is the Wikipedia on Axl Rose -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axl_Rose I'm not excusing his behavior, but I think the man clearly has problems. If he is bi-polar and goes off his meds, it can explain a lot of why he acts the way he does. When people who are bi-polar are feeling good, they feel they can do anything and they think, "I don't need these drugs" or they feel the drugs stifle them creatively because they don't get the same high highs (nor the same low lows), and then when they go off prescribed meds, they behave erratically again. The reason I initially posted this is that I thought it was interesting that someone who once had some stature (again, not my cup of tea) in the business was turning down the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of (Sh)Fame. We have discussed Linda's omission from the RRHOF numerous times and I don't want to relitigate that here. But, honestly, I was glad that someone was basically telling the RRHOF, "No thanks." I wish that more acts -- more mainstream acts -- would say to Jann Wenner, "You know what? You do not honor people unless they are people you want in here. This is not based on true merit. And until you honor people based in a more meaningful process, then, you can take the RRHOF and shove it." I wish there were some kind of boycott of the RRHOF. Interestingly, the other day, I had Googled Linda's name and it was an article saying that everyone thinks of the music centers as being New York and Los Angeles, but Cleveland has really put people on the map, and it included Linda Ronstadt as one of that artists on whom Cleveland had given its seal of approval. And it kind of take me aback since Cleveland and the RRHOF are so intertwined. Here is the link .. www.newsnet5.com/dpp/entertainment/rock_hall/Cleveland-was-dubbed-rock-n-roll-capital-of-the-world-in-70s-and-80s Erik and Dianna, please know that I understand where you are coming from with your remarks about Axl Rose. But, to be fair and honest, I really posted it more as a comment about the Hall of Shame.

I don't have any animosity towards Axl or GnR the band. I have a lot of music from the original band. I also don't think Axl has an issue with wenner or anybody else over at the RRHOF (unless I missed something) The issue I feel he has is more with his past band mates.. slash for one. which is why he probably wrote that letter and declined. which, imo is a little childish and why I said to "grow up."

Interesting, yes--and ironic, too, when you consider that Wenner basically rewrote the rules so that GNR could get in, while at the same time keeping a lot of good womenfolk on the outside looking in.
The reason I don't think more mainstream acts are willing to gainsay Wenner on the RRHOF is because they are scared s***less of him, and how he can make them look in the media. As much as I despise him, he wields a lot of power, and woe to the person or act that p***es him off.

Guys, I don't think this is about wenner. It's more about the egos over at GnR. As far as the RRHOF, I think for the most part, and we've had this discussion before.. most of the folks inducted are happy to be in (unless you're johnny rotten, who happily and hilariously declined) I mean, a rock star without an ego? Linda might be the only rarity who would decline for other reasons Not caring. I mean can you imagine Linda writing a letter like that because she didn't get along with her bandmates. Just silly IMO. For crying out loud, they're pushing 50 now.

I was thinking along the lines of Rick until I read the part where Mr. Rose complimented the rrhof and I got a bit confused what his point then was. At this time the hall is such a pointless and meaningless operation run by a bunch of unethical characters. If Linda were to be nominated I think she should just ignore the invitation unless she wants to let loose and read them the riot act which would be fine with me also.

As you correctly noted later, a rock star without an ego? Rock history is full of rock heels with huge, petulant egos and/or huge rifts with former band members which pretty much were and are a guarantee that for some acts, no rock reunion is ever possible. It's posiible we could come up with several rock heels, including some who might be far worse than Axl Rose John Fogerty from CCR had to be one of the worst rock heels and he'd be my pick. When CCR was inducted the Jann Wenner Hall of Fame, he wouldn't allow his former bandmates Stu Cook and Doug Clifford to join him on stage to play. He still carried a grudge against them dating back to whenever. He also claimed at one time that all of CCR's music was made by anonymous studio session players. I don't know if he still sticks to that story or has disavowed it. Fogerty joined an all-star tribute band for CCR at the R&RHoF, but he has shown how much of an a** he truly is. He also even held a grudge against his own late brother Tom, reportedly rejecting a request from Tom before his death for CCR to get together one last time. But, he apparently never forgave his brother for saying his solo hit "The Old Man Who Lives Down the Road" borrowed from John's earlier hit, "Run Through the Jungle." And what's truly sad, I think, is that whenever I hear one of these tales about someone like Fogerty, it diminishes my appreciation for them and their music. But, again, like Axl Rose, he's far from alone when it comes to being a heel.

Yes, that one involving Blondie was a ridiculous spectacle. You kind of have to wonder if Linda's inability to provoke an actual onstage spat is another reason why Wenner won't induct her. He seems to thrive on made-for-video drama like this (IMHO).

He seems to thrive on made-for-video drama like this (IMHO). He thrives on stuff like that but when it came to Blondie, the strange thing was that Wenner and/or Rolling Stone was big on the group before they made it. But, afterwards? Rolling Stone seemed to resent the fact that they became a successful musical act. There was always this kind of perverse, schizoid thinking by certain people from the 60s and 70s who liked acts that never made it and wished the rest of the world would get on board with those acts. But, when that would happen, then these same people didn't like the fact the acts became successful. I knew people who liked Linda as long as she struggled on the record sales but the moment her albums started selling in the millions, they stopped liking her. People are strange. It's a pity Debbie Harry and the other Blondie couldn't have put aside the differences with the former members and let them play up on stage with them when Blondie was inducted into the R&RHoF. Because the Blondie that was being inducted into the R&RHoF that night wasn't the band that performed on stage but the band which had included the former members. The band that had been successful in the 70s and early 80s is the band that should've been playing on stage that night, not the band made up of three of the original members with then newer members.

I hate that kind of attitude as well, and I'm afraid Jann Wenner is a leader, if not the leader. in fostering this attitude among a lot of the rest of the public. The minute you become successful, then, in the minds of people like that, you become "commercial", you become somehow tainted, you've "sold out." If there's a downside to the 60s, it is precisely that attitude that came out of it (IMHO).

I knew people who liked Linda as long as she struggled on the record sales but the moment her albums started selling in the millions, they stopped liking her. People are strange. I've been like that with some artists. I was a big Jimmy Buffett fan in the early '70s-- loved his first 4 albums. I thought the album with Margaritaville, though it made him a huge star, was a letdown, and I haven't heard an album by him since then that's even worth owning. But I don't begrudge him the success. And then there is Bonnie Raitt. If I had to choose, I would keep all the albums she recorded before Nick of Time over the ones since. But I'm glad she finally found success. I don't like any Blondie albums since Parallel Lines, either. And has Linda Rondstadt done anything worth listening to since Heart Like a Wheel?

And has Linda Rondstadt done anything worth listening to since Heart Like a Wheel?Huh? I think he'd like to work for Jan Wenner ;D Q: How many Rolling Stone critics does it take to change a light bulb? A: Rolling Stone critics don’t know how, but rest assured they’ll find something wrong with the way you do it.

That's a joke, son! I think there is something of value in every Linda Ronstadt record, even the ones I don't particularly love like Silk Purse or Living in the USA.

I guess, he did kind of give it to the Hall.. A tweet.. The rest of this in the link. Well, good for him. I say. This isn’t an attack. These are genuine issues I don’t have enough verified information on to have more than rough ideas. Certainly not enough information to make any judgments about. I still don’t exactly know or understand what the Hall is or how or why it makes money, where the money goes, who chooses the voters and why anyone or this board decides who, out of all the artists in the world that have contributed to this genre, officially “rock” enough to be in the Hall.. music-mix.ew.com/2012/04/18/axl-rose-rock-hall-twitter/

I found a cartoon from Mad Magazine #230 on this subject-- also a bonus Linda cartoon. The article was called Only A True Rock Fan Would...- written by Chris Hart, art by Jack Davis. The original art for this article is up for sale on ebay.
