I would say that radio stations of the Americana stripe (few though they may be) may very well pick this up. But I think one can stick a fork into the notion of it ever getting mainstream country radio airplay.

Powerful song-never heard it before or even heard of it. I am embarrassed to say I have never heard of Joe Ely either-missed a great singer. Eric mentioned a back story on this song. Love to hear any info anyone has.

Ely is kind of a modern legend in Lubbock, Texas; and he and Linda first performed together at one of the city's Tornado Jam shindigs in 1982. Ely's band also included, on pedal steel guitar, one Lloyd Maines (you may know not only him but his kid Natalie too). He opened for Linda a couple of times, as well as for the Clash, and counts, among his fans, Bruce Springsteen.

Much of the song sounds familiar. Sort of like Kenny Rogers song Lucille.

The link doesn't work for me, perhaps it's because I'm in the UK? Is anyone savvy enough to be able to download or isolate the clip?

Thanks for posting this, Erik. I know we have discussed this song before. In fact, I actually have the song via a link provided here on the Board. Someone must have been able to acquire a bootlegged copy and then uploaded it and provided the link here to the site. It will be nice to have an authorized version of the song. Given the way that it was worded in the article, I wonder if we will start to see more legitimate releases of other officially previously unreleased material.

Until someone can come up with a alternate link, you might try directly loading the Dallas morning news website and search around for the article with the song. I hope you get ahold of it 'cause it's worth the annoyance. Good luck!! Fab-I just tried what I said above and it worked. Went to the Dallas morning news website, in the menu went to "entertainment" and searched for "Linda Ronstadt" and the article with the embedded song was there.

I would hope so. I realize that Linda is an ultimate perfectionist and that she's not happy about a good deal of the stuff she did, and I can't blame her for feeling that way. That said, though, I would try to make a case to Linda, if ever the opportunity arose, that even her "less than perfect" stuff is light years ahead of even the best of a mediocre bunch of today's corporate radio fare.

It goes without saying that Linda would much rather perform and record new material. Since that's not the case, these duet albums are a way for her to earn an income. The success of the first one shows that there is still a market for her music and perhaps she can also acquire some new fans. It will be interesting to see which songs are selected for the next CD. It would be nice if there are additional tracks that we haven't heard before.

As I've said before, I would hope that this song gets some love on the Americana format, and allows listeners and fans of that genre to find out what they have missed in Linda. Mainstream country, though, it ain't-a-gonna happen. I doubt it would get played even if Music Row still allowed the kind of "eclecticmania" that Linda embodied; and, being awash in that godawful bro-country c**p, it definitely won't now, in my opinion.
