www.kvoa.com/news/linda-ronstadt-to-receive-award-in-sahuarita/from KVOA.com <snip> SAHUARITA - Linda Ronstadt is returning to Southern Aizona this weekend to receive a special honor in Sahuarita. Ronstadt, who was born and raised in Tucson, will receive the Woman on the Border award at BorderLinks annual dinner on Sunday, March 25th, in the Good Shepherd United Church of Christ in Sahuarita. The internationally-acclaimed artist is being honored for raising her voice to defend the rights of immigrants, opposing SB 1070 and the actions of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "Linda Ronstadt is a woman from the borderlands who has spoken out courageously in support of human rights and sustainable agriculture," said Fernanda Morillón, executive director of BorderLinks. "Our mission is to build bridges of solidarity across the U.S.-Mexico border and Linda exemplifies the spirit of our work." <snip>

I think it's a well-deserved award for her, and for those who care about human rights when it comes to so volatile a political, social, and humanitarian flashpoint as the US/Mexico border. Real action, and not just the bunch of politically incendiary bluster coming from "Stay Away Joe" Arpaio, is what needs to be done to protect those living on both sides of the border, as well as the immigrants crossing it to escape the drug cartel violence inside Mexico itself.

I'm pretty sure, and I think you might agree with me Rick, that Linda will hear it from a lot of the right-wingers down there in her home state; but that's the way she sees it. To them, I say this: TOUGH S**T!
As I've said, the real criminals are not the immigrants crossing the border, either for a better life here or just to escape from the bloodbath they've been trapped by. What they're doing may be illegal, but it doesn't come close to murder. The real criminals are the drug cartels in Mexico itself, and, I hate to have to say this, both America's voracious appetite for drugs on the one hand, and its misguided War On Drugs on the other. This is an issue I hope Linda will address in the near-future, because I think it is tied to the issues that she has been a prominent advocate on.

To them, I say this: TOUGH S**T!. Erik, I do agree with you. I am sure it is painful for Linda to see her home state of Arizona going down this path, and, yet, because of her courage and willingness to speak out she is not allowing the Jan Brewers and Joe Arpaios to be the only representation of Arizona. That said, on a lighter note, Bill Maher -- in a takeoff on the March Madness brackets -- brought back his "Stupidest States" contest that he previously did in 2012. In this segment, he matches up Arizona vs. South Carolina....

Setting the Bill Maher thing aside and staying on the point of the topic, the thing to take away from this is that this issue of what's going on along the border is what Linda is concentrating on at this time of her life, and she believes very fiercely in it.
And because she does, she is a convenient target for the Far Right, perhaps even to the point where death threats might get made against her. But all this just goes to show you that she's willing to fight for what she believes in, and that she's willing to tell Jan Brewer and Joe Arpaio to go f**k themselves.

I think that the original post had to do with Linda being honored for her support for immigrants' rights. She has been an outspoken critic against Jan Brewer and Joe Arpaio. She has appeared on CNN to debate Tom Tancredo. When Linda was on CNN to discuss her work in social justice, that clip was posted here in the Linda Ronstadt Forum, not in the War Room. Erik, had, IMO, written articulately about Linda's stand on this issue and the complex factors that exist on both sides of the border. Because Arizona is Linda's home state and she is trying to speak out against these anti-immigrant laws, and is being honored for her support, this does get into the "issues" arena. If Linda were a different type of person, and didn't take public stands on issues, and never stuck her neck out, then, it wouldn't come up in this part of the Forum. But she is an activist and has been going way, way back. Again, eddie, sorry, if the Bill Maher YouTube video offended you.

Quote by Rick:
She just doesn't take the easy way out; the little 2004 Dust-Up In The Desert should have told everyone that. And given how important this issue is to her, and should be to the rest of us, it's good to know she can still keep her hand in.

actually i think that parts of it are funny. everybody should be able to laugh at themselves etc. i do not know much about jan brewer really. my objection was that it was just political in nature and yes it does discuss linda's home state it just does not mention linda so i felt it should be put in another area of the forum. i have no problem with people that have different opinions than myself. i think in general we as humans should just be respectful that we all have opinions and treat each other with respect. eddiejinnj
ps: am so happy that linda got honred. as far as i'm concern she can not receive enough accolades
