There was a rumor going around Detroit in 1977 through the disc jockeys that the hit song "Ebony Eyes" by Bob Welch was written by him after meeting Linda at a party in Los Angeles. Is there any truth to this? I tried an internet search but came up with nothing. Oh, those eyes had me dreamin' too!

I think this must be some kind of Urban Legend; it's certainly the first time I've ever heard such a thing. But I don't believe it's true; and even if it was, he never said (Welch passed away last June).

never heard that one before. I know Stevie Nicks sings on "Ebony Eyes" with him, I remember once thinking of Ronstadt when i was listening to it, wondering who he wrote it about, Nicks...oh wait what about Ronstadt, those eyes...couldn't be though, it would have been spoken about in the press I thought. I have followed Fleetwood Mac and Nicks as long as I have Ronstadt, never once have I heard of the Ronstadt connection outside of my own thoughts. There were lots of songs written with Ronstadt in mind.

I don't believe Welch wrote the song about Linda. In fact, I don't know if there was an actual person behind the song at all, as far as inspiring Welch to write the song. Sometimes, a song is just a song with no real life story behind it. "Ebony Eyes" could certainly apply to Linda, as could any number of songs in a listener's mind, but it doesn't mean the songwriter shares (or shared) the sentiment.

I'm not so sure it's not about LR. Looking at one of the Youtube videos of this song, the girl looks a lot like LR, her hair color/style from this time, and the other "dancing" girl has LR's signature flower in her hair. Coincidence? Perhaps not.

Perhaps not. Possibly, but not to be a wet blanket, bear in mind there were others involved in the making of the music video, including a producer, a director and a writer, and any of them (especially the scriptwriter) could've added those touches to the song. That's not to say Welch didn't add them but here again, that was back in the day when creative music videos were still in their infancy in which the videos were being used in lieu of personal appearances on tv to promote the records. The videos were sometimes used as a buffer to promote the artist when the artist wasn't on tour or didn't have a new 45 or LP out. But, I think there were very few artists involved in the production/directing/writing end of the music videos. Their songs were the musical soundtrack and they were usually the stars (though not always). Most artists, if they wrote, were too busy writing the songs for their next recording sessions. As for non-writing artists, well, if they didn't write songs themselves, what are the chances they'd take the time to write out a little script for a (usually) three to four minute song? Most artists who did the music videos just saw it as another tool to their business, with only a handful involved in the creative end of the musical videos.

As for the song, Stevie sang with him on a 'live version' back in 1978 at the 'Cal Jam' concert but I don't think she's on the recorded version. Maybe the songs about Christine McVie? ;D

I thought I'd read way back when that Nicks and Buckingham contributed vocals (and in Lindsay's case, instrumentation) to Bob Welch's album. But, according to the wikipedia entry for Bob Welch, it was Christine McVie and Mick Fleetwood who made musical contributions to the songs on Welch's album.
