Was sad to hear the news today that Don Cornelius committed suicide. Here he is in happier times, in 1973, when Mary Wilson of The Supremes persuaded Don to dance down The Soul Train line for the first time.

A tragedy to be sure, especially for R&B fans, as that show really helped to accelerate the genre's popularity, especially on TV, during the 1970s. D.C. was in pretty bad straits health wise in the years leading up to this, but it's still a catastrophic loss.

And just as a sidebar, the long-time theme music for Soul Train was "TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)", by the Philly session group MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother), a #1 hit for two weeks in April 1974.
