I never been to her concerts only because I wasn't into her back then. But now I regret that greatly. However, my mom did see her back in the early 80's--1981 she thinks.) So how many times have you seen Linda live?

I'm sad to say, I've never seen her, and most likely never will. Unless of course she decides to come out of retirement. I've only been a fan for about 3 years. I'm actually pretty jealous of all of you who have seen her live.

I second what richwar said reverendb. I wish you would have found Linda a little sooner, she was still touring a few years ago. And what made you become a fan? I should probably go back and read the first becoming aquainted thread, I might get my answer there.

I count myself on the one hand to have been fortunate to see her the three times I did, but on the other hand I have to admit that I would have loved to have been old enough to have seen her in the 70s and 80s. Certainly I wouldn't have wanted to have to go into a gigantic arena or stadium to see her perform (as she often did in those days, which I felt largely dampened her love of rock), but if I had gotten the chance to see her at an actual concert venue back in The Day, like at the Universal Amphitheater, which she sold out for twelve straight nights in late 1977, I'd have been in seventh heaven.
I guess what Memphis DJ George Klein said about his good friend Elvis could apply to Linda as well: "If you're a fan, no explanation is necessary. If you're not, no explanation is possible."

One noticable difference from early Linda (I saw her with my mom and aunt/uncle in 1980. I was a teen.. She hardly said a word on stage. I saw her again in the late 80's for Cry Like a rainstorm, canciones, mas conciones at the pacific amphitheatre.. Then again at the OC Fair for mariachi, then the last time was at the Pacific Amp. was a mix of hummin and her hits. and boy was she ever chatty. Most I have ever heard her speak in concert.. I would pay just to listen to Linda's story telling. lol My favorite concerts (musically) were the frist one in 1980. She was absolutely everything I had imagined and then some.. Then Canciones.. the best!!!

Interesting that you posted this quote as I was about to make a thread on how would you explain Linda to a non-fan. But that quote pretty much encapsulates it! As for me, I too am jealous of those that have seen her live, as I only have been really digging Linda and her music for two months...

You have all of this wonderful (and wonderfully varied) music to discover. As a lifelong fan, there's nothing new (or not much) left for me -- even if there are a thousand moments and hundreds of songs to relive. I remember my first (several) listens to the album Don't Cry Now and imagine a newbie's listening to it for the first several times and all there is to enjoy about that record and, well, yes, I'm envious. In case you haven't done so, do a YouTube search for Linda and Bonnie Raitt singing Cry Like a Rainstorm and Linda singing Willin' from the Lowell George memorial concert. Those will give you a tasty taste of what it was like hearing/seeing her live.

I did not write down how many times or the dates. But I used to go see her once, twice, three times during her runs at the Universal Amphitheatre in the 1970s. I saw her live on stage at the Uris Theatre in "Pirates of Penzance." I saw her then during the "Get Closer" tour for two nights at the Universal Amphitheatre. I also went to the Rose Bowl to see her at the "No Nukes" concert. Then, saw the opening night performance of "What's New" with Nelson Riddle at Radio City Music Hall in the fall of 1983. I then saw her twice during the "Canciones de mi Padre" dates. I then saw her with Aaron Neville when she was touring for "Cry Like a Rainstorm." I saw her at the Hollywood Bowl when Bill Clinton was president and she sang a selection of standards with the Hollywood Bowl orchestra. Then, I saw her at the Amphitheatre in Universal CIty. I believe it was during the "Feels Like Home" tour when she sang many songs from "Winter Light" and "Feels Like Home." Then, I saw her again the next year in Universal City when I believes she was promoting "Dedicated to the One I Love." I believe she closed with "Goodnight." She also sang selections from Randy Newman's "Faust." Then, I last saw her right after the infamous Aladdin incident in Vegas and this was in 2004, before "Hummin' to Myself" was released. If I had to guess, I would say that is about 23-25 times. I've seen her perform live more than any other performer.

And checking out the links on the side too, I watched her version of The Waiting on the Letterman Show which left my jaw agape. Like David said to her at the end, she did it better than Tom! I know I have a long way to go learning her music as I have been concentrating on her 70's stuff--having just ordered Hand Sown Home Grown/Silk Purse--but am now making my way to her other offerings. Purchased The Waiting, Heartbeat Accelerating and Anyone Who had A Heart off Itunes. Fantastic is all I can say. Now I really wish I saw her live. The best now is through Youtube...

I only saw her once, here in my hometown of Roanoke VA in 1990. Don't know how or why, but it ended up being the first stop on her "Cry Like A Rainstorm" tour (and without The Neville Brothers).
Her voice filled the whole building, so I didn't really miss anything when I took a bathroom break during "Still Within the Sound of My Voice". My boyfriend at the time let me look at her through binoculars and she was gorgeous, of course.
My only disappointment was that she didn't perform "Desperado". Otherwise, I was floating on cloud 9 the whole time!

1978 Providence, Livingston Taylor opened and she stared off with All That Dream, it was the first time I saw her with short curly hair. Back in the USA hadn't been released and I was stunned when she sang "Alison"...I had been trying to win tickets from WRKO, my mom took pity and bought them. Then had to convince my brother and girlfriend to take me.
1980 Boston Garden, Danny Kortchmar opened as a solo, then played with her band--after introducing the band Linda said "I know you'd be dissapointed if Wendy (Waldman) didn't do a couple of tunes" and took a little break while wending sang "our town" and something else.
1983 Worcester Centrum, she wore a cheer leading skirt, the opening act was some now-forgotton vocal band of 5 black guys--it seemed kind of a weird match and didn't bode well. She never looked or sounded more uncomfortable.
1983 Boston Common--Linda wore the pink and black outfit she wore in the Randy Newman video and opened with Tumbling Dice it was an outdoor venue she was having a great time dancing with Liza Edwards. The Globe said "night and day" when comparing to the Worcester show and said when she's on she's still a tough act to beat.
1988 Great Woods, the full Canciones de mi Padre..not a word of English, lot of confusion in the audience.
1990 Great Woods again, Neville Brothers opened, she wore a black top and bright blue puffy shirt it was penned the Greatest Hits Tour and might them the last time anyone's heard them all live.
1995-Orpheum Theater, The Nelsons opened... she wore a long sleaved, full length black velvet dress a huge cross around her neck and was heavier than before, but still had some serious sexy going on. Everyone agreed she was on fire, never better, the crowd went into a frenzy when she held one impossible note during "Do What You Gotta Do." The reviews were all excellent and she proved, once again, that she's one of a kind. She had Valerie Carter, Alexandra Brown, Mortonette Jenkins, Marlene Jete and what seemed like another twenty people on stage. Sound was incredible.
1996 Great Woods, Steve Terrell opened, Marvin Hamlisch conducted. It may have been the only tour with both a synphony (Pittsburg) AND Linda's old rock band. Another long black dress, another flawless performance.
1999 Orpheum, with Emmylou Harris, both very charming and FUNNY, Linda did stuff I'd never heard live like "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" her neice Melinda joined her for "Heart Like a Wheel." Only time I'd heard "We Ran" live and it was outrageous, blew the roof of the place.
2006 newly renovated Boston Opera House...Livingston Taylor opened and Linda' first words were "Isn't it Great to Livingston Taylor again!" She had a lot to say about what a great city we have and how its run by Democrats. The high point may just have been "Little Girl Blue" where the crowd erupted with hoots over a note that went longer than most of us could hold our breath.
2007 Newport Folk Festival, about 15 seconds into the opening song, "What's New" the sound shorted out so did this eleborate courtsey and left the stage. It got fixed and was back, but not before some idiot came out to explain the problem. He didn't realize that everyone was laughing because he was speaking into a mike that didn't work trying to tell us that the mike didn't work. It was great to hear "High Sierra" and "Feels Like Home" in the midst of her all standards period.
2007 Cape Cod Melody Tent, I was actually vacationing in Provincetown and everyone was flabergasted to find out that I would forgo a sweaty house-music club to do something that involved wearing a shirt...most remarkable thing about the show was "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" was the encore, it was a strictly standards show and I was so stunned I asked a friend what song it was during the introduction.
I just know I'm forgetting something.

A Bunch. I know how fortunate I am... I have had the good fortune of having lived in the SF bay area since 1960 (yes I am one of the "more experienced" board members ;-P).
I might have missed a couple... and dates may be off a bit....
There is NOTHING close to Linda in concert. Her albums don't do her justice at all. We need a LIVE concert release to show everyone her true range and unbelievable instrument!
1970- Big Sur Fest 1974 - Heart Like A Wheel tour 1976- Day on the Green - Eagles 1978 - Day on the Green - Dolly Parton, Beach Boys, Elvin Bishop, etc 1979 - Back in the USA 1980 - Mad Love 1981 - Pirates of Penzance 1981 - Mad Love 2nd tour 1982- Greek Theater 1983 - Get Closer 1984 - What's New - Orpheum SF 2x 1988 - Canciones - Circle Star 2x 1989 - SF Gift Center AIDS Benefit 1990 - Cry Like a Rainstorm 1995 - Feels Like Home Tour 1996- Davies Hall 1998- Saratoga Western wall 1999 - Warfield SF 1999 - w/ Eagles New Year’s Eve Staples Center opening concert 2006 - Saratoga 2007 - Saratoga 2007 - San Jose - w/ Los Lobos 2008 - SJ Mariachi Festival 2009 - SF Symphony Peter and the Wolf (narrator)

The very first time I saw Linda was in 1978 during the Living in the USA tour in Buffalo NY. Sat in the 3rd row on the floor. I was in awe! She was amazing! At one point, she looked right at me, I smiled at her, she smiled back. I was 14 and I was so psyched that she actually smiled at me! LOL.
I saw her twice in 83. Once in NYC at Radio City Music Hall where she did a few shows. She was very animated during that show and really got into Get Closer with the microphone off the stand as she strolled the entire stage! She was really having fun. Of course, me and the audience went crazy when James Taylor walked out and they sang Think Its Gonna Work Out Fine. I then saw her in Buffalo again on her birthday in July of 83 and I was in the 2nd row. Someone gave her a cupcake with a single lit candle on it. The promoter of that show was Harvey and Corky, Harvey being Harvey Weinstein the now famous movie producer. My uncle knew him and at one point, there was a possibility of me going back stage and meeting Linda, but he kind of said, well, she doesn't really like people coming back stage. He probably could have brought me backstage and she would have been fine with it for sure. I was only one person after all, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
Saw her in Cleveland in I believe 2002?
Also saw her when she was in Pirates of Penzance when it was on Broadway.

I saw her live twice. First time in 1980 doing rock concert in Biloxi MS. I think she did all her hits and stuff from her new album at the time MAD LOVE. I think I have notes I took back then cos I was so jazzed after the show and just totally wowed by how powerful her vocals were in person. She was just perfection. Maybe someday I'll find what I did with those thoughts I wrote down at the time. I remember she wore an outfit similar to the one she wore in a Rolling Stone cover Where she's sitting in short pink outfit of flimsy silk like shorts and sleeveless top. I don't recall if one I saw in person though was pink or red. Then in 1984 I saw her in New Orleans, La at the Worlds Fair. It was with Nelson Riddle Orchestra. It was great too! Her voice equally as beautiful & powerful as 4 years earlier. I especially recall her ending with DESPERADO. I think maybe she did it acapello. I wish I would have seen her live doing her Mexican show. I was supposed to see her again. I think it was 2004 or 2005. She was coming again to Mississippi. I think maybe to Jackson but not sure. But I was going! It got canceled at last minute because of her bad health. I think was year she quit. It may have been one of last scheduled concerts. I don't recall hearing of any concerts she did after that. And I was watching...
