Back in 1972 at my first Ronstadt concert Linda sang this song which I had always hoped she would record but I don't ever remember her singing it anywhere ever again. I wonder if she was just testing the water? She did a great live version of this JJ Cale song, Don't Go To Strangers:
JJ's music fits her to a tttttttttt!
If I'm standing in a crowd, call my name, call it loud Don't go to strangers, woman, call on me Wave your arms in the air, let me know that you're there When in doubt, oh woman, call on me Don't leave me here to rust, don't let me turn to dust Oh, woman, when in doubt, call on me If I'm standing in a crowd, call my name, call it loud Don't go to strangers, woman, call on me

At that same concert in 1972 the lights darkend in the University auditorium and an extended intro of this song began to play as Linda's road manager (holding her hand) walked her onstage to the mike where she began to sing a rousing rendition of The Only Mama That'll Walk The Line. I told everyone I knew to tell everyone they knew that they'd better go to this concert or they would be very sorry. It sounded very much like this:
This was Linda's band at the time I met her:

Thanks for these uploads! Linda sure sounds great live...even back then she was crystal clear. It's easy to see how she was slowly integrating the rock and roll sound with traditional country. I didn't understand it at the time (I was only 10), but I can see now how the country rock phenomenon was slowly taking hold. In another area, why does Linda sing, "I'm nobody's sugar mama now." ? It doesn't make sense at all with respect to the lyrics. Even LeeAnn Rimes sings, "sugar baby" which makes perfect sense. Throughout Linda's career, she often switches up the lyrics and they don't make sense in the context of the song...notably "Poor, poor pitiful me" and "Alison". Maybe even a couple of others. In any event, she's mahhhhhvelous! ))))

It is really interesting to see how different acts influenced each other back then. Bernie Leadon who was in Flying Burrito's was also a friend and eventual bandmate of Linda's. You can especially see his influence on her sound in We Ran, the album.Linda Ronstadt Only Mama That'll Walk the Line Composed by: Earl Ball / Ivy J. "Jimmy" Bryant overview reviewby Matthew Greenwald A tough, gritty example of late-'60s country-rock, this updated version of "Only Mama That'll Walk the Line" by Linda Ronstadt was a staple of her early solo live sets, following her departure from the Stone Poneys. A powerful electric guitar riff guides the melody while the rhythmic feel is straight out of the Flying Burrito Brothers' early songbook, particularly similar to their version of "Six Days on the Road." The overall flavor is worlds away from a lot of her pop/rock hits that would follow, and is historical in this context. A smoking live version is available on Ode's live album, Celebration: The Big Sur Folk Festival 1970. 9 of 11 people found the following review helpful 4.0 out of 5 stars A landmark album that went totally unrecognized July 21, 2001 By Erik North TOP 1000 REVIEWER Format:Audio CDDuring the late 1960s, there was a sudden musical uprising known as country-rock. Acts like Poco, the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez were all making albums that helped to reconnect rock and roll with its traditional white country music roots. The year 1969 was pivotal for the genre. The Flying Burrito Brothers (led by Gram Parsons) released their landmark album THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN, which, although a huge flop in '69, is now seen as a landmark album. But another country-rock album from that year went equally unrecognized. That was HAND SOWN, HOME GROWN, the first solo album of ex-Stone Poney lead singer Linda Ronstadt.
Although as crude as any of the early albums in the country-rock genre, HAND SOWN shows us a powerful, hippie-type folk-rock singer really willing to explore country music and show it as more than hillbilly redneck noise. Linda's exuberant first version of the standard "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" is a great example of this, enhanced by fuzz-tone steel guitar (!). She also gives us some surprising versions of "The Only Mama That'll Walk The Line" and "Break My Mind", which are both hard-rocking and twangy at the same time. She concedes a quieter folk-rock pose for "The Long Way Around", which became a belated minor hit for her in the winter of 1971.
While many acts get a lot of credit for supposedly "starting" country-rock, including the Burritos, Linda Ronstadt was modestly putting her money where her big voice was from the start--and she never bragged. HAND SOWN, HOME GROWN hopefully will be seen as much a landmark country-rock album as those of the Burritos and the Byrds, because Linda eventually went on to outlast them all. In another area (Lovesick Blues), why does Linda sing, "I'm nobody's sugar mama now."? I have to go to my Urban Dictionary for this one. Linda and LeAnn are from different generations. Womens Lib was BIG back then. If I were a libber which of these definitions would I choose? You will have to ask Linda that one definition of Sugar Mama: 1. Sugar Mama 557 up, 178 down A woman (often an older woman) who holds her man/woman in nice standing with money, food, an apartment, etc. -- not always used in a derogatory fashion, or merely in exchange for sex, but because she can. "Why can't I find me a nice sugar mama to take care of me?" 2. Sugar Mama 223 up, 91 down A distinguished species of older females who seek the company of younger males whilst avoiding the entanglements of a relationship, in favor of a lack of restrictions. The sugar mama has overcome society’s proscribed behavior for women’s sexual behavior. Thus, embraces her true self and lives her life to its fullest. She know what she wants and isn’t afraid to hunt for it! There are several species of sugar mama’s, but an insatiable sexual appetite and a lack of interest in marriage and other conventional romantic institutions are common to all. definition of Sugar Baby 1. sugar baby 239 up, 145 down A young female or male who is financially pampered/cared for by a sugar daddy or sugar mama in exchange for companionship (i.e. sexual favors). Mary Ann bought her sugar baby a new iPhone, brand new lapop, and a nice flat overlooking the water after he gave her a decent humping last night. 2. sugar baby 267 up, 200 down a woman who provides companionship and/or sexual relations for a wealthy, older man in exchange for expensive gifts and/or money; a "gold digger" If you're a rich man and your woman pays attention to you only when she wants your credit card, you're bein' played by a sugar baby! buy sugar baby mugs & shirtsby Silky Smooth Dec 22, 2003 share this add a video 3. Sugar Baby 123 up, 125 down A young, usually attractive girl (or occasionally boy), who gets things such as material possessions or help with paying their bills, for just basically being the "Arm charm" of a much older gentleman (or lady) and pumping up the older lady or gent's ego and rep. by being seen together. But, WITHOUT having to do any sexual favors for them. "S'all uptown, Chanel gowns; Brownstones on 'laxin with the top down. What's that sound? Ching Ching now. Sugar baby need a sugar daddy now now; Sugar's gotta get out! " Waylon's version:

Quote from Matthew Greenwald re. "The Only Mama That'll Walk The Line"
To me, "The Only Mama" is perhaps the earliest example of tough, no-holes-barred Linda, and with a touch of black humor; she changes one of the lines in Waylon's original ("you keep messin' up my mind/nearly every single time") to a satirical "I'm gonna hit you on the head/with a pan of cornbread." It's a shame that there wasn't much more of this genuine California-based honky-tonk C&W-rock in Linda's repertoire, though "Break My Mind" is another revelation, with that same toughness and growl in her voice.
As for the J.J. Cale song "Don't Go To Strangers"--that is another one I think Linda could have put on record, considering how it fits inside her eclectic ballpark.

Speaking of "The Only Mama...," her performance of it on the Johnny Cash show (as seen on youtube) is stellar. And oh, is she so pretty too on it.

Here is a typical set list from that year (1972):
1 I Fall To Pieces 1:59 2 Silver Threads & Golden Needles 2:29 3 Rock Me On The Water 3:41 4 Lightning Bar Blues 3:38 5 Crazy Arms 3:29 6 How Long 3:13 7 Band Intro / Richard Bowden Monologue 5:00 8 Mail Order Dog With Richard Bowden 2:19 9 Lovesick Blues 2:02 10 Long Long Time 4:08 11 Break My Mind 3:05 12 Rose City Chimes 13 Rescue Me
My Ronstadt concert didn't include all of those songs but I did find Richard Bowden quite entertaining and quite a nice man to an annoying fan.
