I think "soft rock" for lack of a better term is in the tradition of country rock and folk rock ballads.....a spot Linda was the visionary of in her day. It's not soft music though which might be thought of as lightweight but melodic and very introspective. She was the Queen of Rock period!

Quote by kgreen:
All true. In the end, however, it all boils down to how (or whether) you can change the minds of a music-buying public that has already been brainwashed by the idea (propagated by Rolling Stone and other "hip" music magazines) that melodic/introspective music, especially of the California singer/songwriter kind, is nothing but "wallpaper" music.
Again, it's as Upton Sinclair said: "It's difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on him not understanding it."

Onward and upward now...
This morning on KOLA 99.9 FM San Bernardino
Casey Kasem's American Top 40: The 70s
Week ending October 15, 1977
In its second week in the Top 40, Our Girl's heart-wrenching version of Roy Orbison's 1963 classic "Blue Bayou" moves up four spots, from #40 to #36.
Alongside:
SEND IN THE CLOWNS--Judy Collins IT WAS ALMOST LIKE A SONG--Ronnie Milsap WAY DOWN--Elvis Presley (peaked at #18 three weeks before for the King [posthumously, of course]) THE KING IS GONE--Ronnie McDowell NOBODY DOES IT BETTER--Carly Simon WE'RE ALL ALONE--Rita Coolidge STRAWBERRY LETTER 22-The Brothers Johnson STAR WARS THEME/CANTINA BAND--Meco BRICKHOUSE--The Commodores DUSIC--Brick
Meantime, Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" tops the chart in the first week of what would be a jaw-dropping ten-week run at the summit.

we got out late to go to yard sales yesterday so I missed the beginning of the countdown. was wondering where blue bayou was as I knew it was out the same time as boone's song. what I couldn't understand is that she never had a significant followup to a ten week number one. hey, like I said many people would just love that one song to be remembered for. eddiejinnj

Quote by eddieinnj re. Debbie Boone and "You Light Up My Life":
I think Debbie had further hits on the country charts for a period, and then she got into the Christian music scene with her father (who was the parent-approved alternative to that Presley guy in the 1950s).
I should also mention that, in this same week that "Blue Bayou" was at #36, "It's So Easy" was in its second week in the Hot 100, at #65, and steadily climbing. No other female singer before could claim to have two songs climbing the Hot 100 at the same time, and nobody had been able to do this since April 1964, when the Beatles had twelve songs in the Hot 100 at once, all either at their peak positions or still climbing.

With temperatures hovering mid-90's all week and heat indices close to or above 100 degrees here in NW Ohio, how fitting it was to have heard Heatwave today. Don't hear it much around here, but was pleasantly surprised to hear it piped-in at a local super market in the D.C. area.

A shocker, once again, to have heard "Blue Bayou" last night @ 9:41 PM. on the Art LaBoe oldies radio show on KKBT 92.3 FM here in L.A.; normally, the station plays urban/contemporary and classic R&B.

Heard Linda's "You're No Good," briefly, as the musical interlude between segments on today's "The Five" (FOX TV).

Nice way to start the morning: just heard "You're No Good."
(Not sure to include this but also heard "Heart Of Gold" too. Does that count as Linda on the radio? Definitely!)

Once again, 98.7 The River (Savannah, GA/Hilton Head Island, SC), is using Linda's "When You Wish Upon A Star" as the theme song for their Holiday Wishes campaign. This is an annual event during which the radio station shares stories of local families who are affected by cancer and who need some help in order to make the holidays special for their families. Commercials for this campaign run throughout the day, and at the beginning of each one they play the first few lines of Linda singing "When You Wish Upon A Star" and they continue to play the song in the background for the entire commercial, ending with her gorgeous voice singing "Your dreams come true"! More often than not, the DJ will make a positive comment about Linda Ronstadt's singing. In the past, these comments were about how beautiful her voice is and what an outstanding job she did with this song. Of course, this year, many of the comments are how beautiful her voice WAS and how sad it is that she can no longer sing; although, they usually end with a positive note about her musical legacy and her huge catalog of amazing records. Even though the commercial is for a fund raising event, it is nice to hear Linda and to hear her get so much positive recognition!

I almost never listen to the radio, but this morning I was a passenger in someone else's car and they played "It's so Easy" from "brand new rock'n'roll HOF member Linda Ronstadt" on the radio.
