It's July, the anniversary of one of Linda's controversial concerts. In that light, I have gathered together some articles from that era to get a feel for what really happened. Also, the L A Times article has Linda's accurate quote about concerts and Christians and right-wingers. A lot of conservative media like to say that Linda did not want any Christians or right-wingers at her concerts, but clearly that is not what she is saying here.

Almost seems like a "quainter" time, right? "Almost" being the operative word here, of course.
It wasn't a lot of fun being a fan--at least I don't think it was--because of how much outrage there was over what Linda had said in Vegas. Some of it was vented onto the iteration of the fan forum that we had at that time, and of course a lot more of that was out there in the press. I don't remember whether Linda received the kind of death threats as the Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines had, but it wouldn't surprise me if she had gotten at least one such threat. I recall it being such a hairy time.
Part of it--in my opinion, a lot of it--was the fact that Linda wasn't anywhere near as "prominent" as she had been in the 70's and 80's, so it was easy for the media to forget she was even still around and that she might have still had opinions. I also think the media was reluctant to air a lot of contrary opinions to the political wisdom of that time. Linda probably didn't count on the possibility that what she said onstage might actually provoke a vicious reaction among the medium, the political world, and the public. But if anyone had done any research, they would have known that what she did was totally in character with who she had been since the 1970's. Whether that would have mollified anyone's opinions is anybody's guess; I don't necessarily think it did.
I think I would have shuddered even worse if she had had the nerve and ability to be as outspoken during the period of 2017 to 2020 as she had been during the summer of 2004.

I tend to not be at all interested in the politics of any musician who's music I love, some I know I flatly disagree with, but great music over-rides personal views.
I prefer an individuals politics not to be preached, but the occasional comment in the public eye is just taken with the pinch of salt, but that can go haywire as we saw there, but Linda has no problem fighting her corner, we know that. Politics within song lyrics or songs chosen to sing is not something I gravitate towards.
Of course some artistes are forever droning on with their views so that can cloud the music. Also actors, more so.
