Yes, Nichelle's role as Lt. Uhura was vitally important for ethnic/racial representation on television and, of course, in the movies. Considering that Star Trek wasn't even all that much of a success when it was on network TV (it lasted only three years on NBC, from 1966 to 1969), but then it became a Big Thing once it went into syndication in the mid-1970's, we all got a good idea of how integral she was to the series--and then, of course, the series became a cinematic franchise.
She'll surely be missed, but she will surely be remembered quite well, among "Trekkies" and non-"Trekkies" alike.
