It was indeed very remarkable for Linda to even attempt to pull this authentic Mexican show off, let alone the album that generated it. Even she admitted somewhere once that this was all an incredible commercial risk; but of course, at two and a half million copies sold, Canciones De Mi Padre is still the biggest-selling non-English album in popular music history.

Great reading that.
Linda didn't stop here in (or near) Chicago, but I do have the Canciones DVD and that is fantastic.

Great reading that. Linda didn't stop here in (or near) Chicago, but I do have the Canciones DVD and that is fantastic. Richard, I was fortunate to have seen one of the shows at the then-Universal Amphitheatre. It was a beautiful show production-wise. Linda was in incredible voice and she seemed to be having the time of her life. Am glad to have the DVD to be able to refer back to that magical evening.

wasn't she in ny off-Broadway with the show? I thought she was there for a number of shows but a limited run. I was busy with my job and stuff so I didn't end up seeing her on that one. Probably the only quote tour I missed since I first saw her in 80. eddiejinnj ps: sorry am half -asleep. I do ny shows listed there but only like a few days. was that all in ny?

Wasn't she nominated for a Tony for this show? So she must have been in NYC at some point with it—right? It's still amazing to me to watch her sing "La Cigarra." Talk about lung power! I know she said "Party Girl" was a vocal workout, but "La Cigarra" is a marathon. And she doesn't even seem to break a sweat! She just opens her mouth and all that gorgeous sound comes out. Here is the full Canciones show on Youtube. " La Cigarra" starts at 6:16.

Rebroadcast in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month on KCET www.kcet.org/about/pressroom/kcet-press-releases/kcet-celebrates-hispanic-heritage-month-with-special-programming-beginning-september-20.htmle The Canciones show was at The Minskoff Theater - An On Broadway house. Saw two shows, the last time I saw Linda live. I sat in front of the Mexican UN Ambassador and his family. Boy did they have a ball. Whooping and hollering at the appropriate moments. It was a thrilling evening vocally and Linda was so "happy". While her R&R shows of mid to late 70s remain my favorite - vocally these Mexican shows were easily the most powerful I have ever heard a female vocalist live. As stated in some reviews there was always something girlish about Linda even with the powerful pipes going full tilt but her voice was more womanly with the Spanish tunes. Not sure this makes exact sense but it was these shows that made me really modify my opinion of so many other big voiced female vocalists(won't name them at the risk of others wrath) -they simply could not deliver this kind of diversity and intensity. Once again it makes me wish I hadn't ignored Linda in the 1990s.

Funny that the Dallas show is listed as being at Reunion Arena, because that was one of those dreaded sports stadiums (in this case, the former home of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks) that Linda despised ever performing in.

Once again it makes me wish I hadn't ignored Linda in the 1990s. Before the summer Broadway run, she did a few shows at the beautiful City Center in February during the original tour. After that first show, I was blown away! Then they announced the 3 week Broadway run. Saw 5 more shows. I agree that these were her greatest vocal showcases in her impressive career. There are thrilling vocal moments in all her shows but these from start to end as part of a staged show just has so much drama. By the way, there is a huge show honoring Linda's mariachi music, SEE BELOW. In the article it mentioned that Canciones has sold 10 million worldwide. #1 selling foreign language record ever. If true, this might make it her biggest selling record ever.....more than Greatest Hits or Simple Dreams. Kev Tribute ConcertA Tribute to Linda Ronstadt and Women in Mariachi Music October 3, 2014Entertainment To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Jacobs Presents will have a Mexican Fiesta (to pay “Tribute to Linda Ronstadt and Women in Mariachi Music”), where all-female Mariachi Flor de San Diego and Mariachi Uclatlán de Los Angeles will be playing some of your favorite Linda Ronstadt’s songs. Enjoy entertainment for the whole family, great Mexican Food and the performance of the Ballet Folkloricos Nanahuatzin and DanzArts – Sabor Mexico Theatrical Dance Company. The acclaimed Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles will also be part of this magnificent tribute. As America’s first all-female Mariachi Group, Reyna has been taking on a male-dominated musical tradition and building the popularity of Mariachi music since its founding in 1994. In a musical landscape where songs are often written by men, about male perspectives, Reyna has created its own history. That history had the best of beginnings with the mentorship of Lola Beltran, “La Reina de la Musica Ranchera,” who created confidence among the members in the early years. Reyna has gained fame for their 2009 Latin and American Grammy-nominated Compañeras album, as well as the stars they have shared the stage with; such as Vicki Carr, Guadalupe Pineda, Miguel Aceves Mejia and Lucha Villa. On this occasion, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles will be paying tribute to Grammy-Award winning Linda Ronstadt, whose Mariachi album Canciones De Mi Padre has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. These canciones are part of Ronstadt’s family tradition and musical roots. On July 28, 2014, President Obama awarded Ronstadt with the National Medal of Arts and Humanities Award. In addition to the Tribute, an exhibit on History of Women in Mariachi Music from 1903-2014 will be displayed, including original Trajes Charros (Mariachi Suits) from different time periods. Come with your whole family for an unforgettable experience full of dance, music, flavor and good times… !Que Vivan Las Mujeres! The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation launched Jacobs Presents offering first-class cultural celebrations and performances in their continued effort to enrich the local community. The series has featured award-winning R&B band Mint Condition, Poncho Sanchez and now Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles. With a capacity of up to 1,000 guests, concert-quality acoustics and lighting, security, free parking, and easy access to highway and public transportation; the Jacobs Center is making its mark as one of San Diego’s best quality venues for live music.

I’m watching the dvd of this again tonight and even after the many many times I’ve seen it I am still blown away by this show. Everyone I’ve shown this to (even those with limited Linda knowledge) are stunned by her performance on this …
Linda is in INCREDIBLE voice and the show so visually stimulating and entertaining … who could not have loved this!
She shines with this music, as much or even more than she does on the Nelson Riddle tunes.
I find it interesting that there are several “threes” in Linda’s career - Trio, 3 albums with Nelson Riddle and 3 Mexican / Latin albums (pls excuse me if by categorising as a trio I’m offending anyone - no offence intended, I love them all as the spectacular vocal pieces they are!)
Any more occurrences of 3 in her career ??
😉

Three Stone Poneys albums. Three solo Capitol albums. The Andrew Gold Asylum trilogy (Heart Like a Wheel, Prisoner in Disguise, Hasten Down the Wind). A pattern? Seems like after #3, Linda was ready to move on.

After Linda's first hit with the Stone Poneys,Different Drum, it would be three years before she had another hit, Long, Long Time. And then another three years before she had another hit with Love Has No Pride.

I would just classify it as three albums featuring Andrew Gold as a musician rather than the labels the albums were on. Linda had 3 compilation albums during her working life; GH1, GH2 & Reminiscences. There were GH from 1976 GH Volume Two from 1980 on Asylum, and A Retrospective released by Capitol in 77’. Reminiscences was not an official Ronstadt release if I am not mistaking. I am talking USA official Ronstadt compilation releases. She actually had at least one more as well released by Rhino that she had some input on if I remember correctly. It came out in 2001-2002 when she was still recording and touring in her career. Wait, there also was a Mexican compilation put out by Rhino around 2004. Should the Rhino Compilations be classified as official Ronstadt releases? she did have input on them if I remember correctly. Reminiscences and For Country Lovers I don’t consider official Ronstadt releases.

She has had more than 3 compilations. I have never heard of Reminiscences. I am looking at "For Country Lovers" album on wall now. I got one near mint framed on the Ronstadt wall. I certainly would count that as a compilation as well as the Rhino ones. For me "Ten" was her number for quite a while. She had Ten Top Ten songs, Ten Top Ten albums including Trio I, and for quite a while had 10 Grammys. I think, Erik commented on the ten number before. Now she has 11 Grammys (not including any Lifetime Achievement awards). The documentary won for Music Video, Long Form and is a win for artist plus producer/s. eddiejinnj

The ones like For Country Lovers, those are secon rate complications that she has no say in.

I think A Retrospective was also only Capitol songs, I would have to get my copy out to check for sure. I myself look at For Country Lovers or an even the Different Drum compilation as second rate b-bins releases by the record company to make a quick buck. Where as GH 1 and 2 and even Capitol’s A Retrospective as “official”, with real artwork design and a purpose besides a quick buck. For Country Lovers might have been a Capitol release but it was third rate at best.

"A Retropective" has Linda's original " Silver Threads", and alternatives of "Some of Shelley's Blues" & the Laura Nyro song I don't like. Neither album has the full length "Different Drum", only "Evergreen" mono release has has that.
