While he may have been the "Third Man" of this ultimate undertaking of Man, he was up there for forty-seven orbits of the Moon while his fellow crewmen were down there, sixty miles below; and he must have felt like the loneliest human being in the Universe at that point.
It is sad to see another great hero of the ages leave this life; but his achievements, as well as those of Armstrong and Aldrin, are still up there on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility for all time.
