Welcome to the forum, Topher!! It seems to me that you have to open account to view. Is there any other way to make a convenient link unless of course it is not appropriate to do so. I saw a flash of the article and it seems they begin the article with Linda. Thanks for the info. eddiejinnj

The link works for me, it's just that I have used up my free articles for the month. Maybe I can read it on Monday.

I too could not read the article. I cleared my browser history and cookies and the link worked with no problem.

I went to internet options and deleted my history and it still doesn't work. Maybe, as Fab said, I read more Times articles free than I realize and I went over without joining/subscribing. eddiejinnj

I think the important part is getting rid of the cookies. I will see if I can grab the article to share here.

Very interesting, and nice :-) I'm not here to dis Elton because he made some superb records early in his career, for me he peaked with the Don't Shoot Me album which was current when I was at school and is my favourite Elton album, except for Crocodile Rock which was just awful. And prior to that his work was mostly excellent, imo. I was very amused by the Elton / Billy Joel feud which seemed to be summed up by Elton asking Billy why he made so few albums, with Billy's reply why do you make so many? There is quite a broad line between being prolific and churning out pretty feeble albums that legions of fans pay through the nose for (Rolling Stones ... Rod Stewart anyone?) and to me the same goes for his live performances, his voice fell apart decades ago. But it seems to be Studio Album / Live Album / dvd year after year. But... he's still a lovely chap as we see... and does alot of good... it's just his musical output that leaves me somewhat bemused. Okay, I've blathered on... probably a total tangent to the thread generally, but I caint help myself :-)

It is basically a Linda article on Elton. I knew the Boss would post it and thanks!!! Hope everyone's Thanksgiving was nice. Elton, unless Linda forgot, maybe just sent flowers to her in 2004 and didn't call or her call him? 30 yrs is 1990. Maybe they did talk then and she is just estimating how long in her mind it has been since they talked. Hey, Alyn, so you spell "can't" "cain't"? I am reading an Ireland set novel, The Rage, now and I learn all kinds of different English sayings from different countries including spelling differences. Very interesting (thinking of Artie Johnson) when I type that. eddiejinnj

I have no idea where that 'caint' came from Eddie... sometimes my Southern England twang gets confused with a Southern US twang... I just like to thrown in something unexpected in my posts, no matter how small... absofolutely :-)

Ahhh...the celebrity status... the ones that help get a star there are soon forgotten, he did have a brilliant band in the mid-late 1970s who made his concerts and albums the huge success they were, on his own he would have been just another singer with someone to write his songs for him... a great voice, great style, great character, great performer...but where would he be without Bernie Taupin - who has received the right amount of credit...but what about those guys in the band... the Johnstones, Olssens, and Coopers... and someone tell me if he has made a half decent record since the Too Low For Zero album and then convince me he still has a singing voice... :-)

except for Crocodile Rock which was just awful. Did you hate that song from the beginning or did you grow to hate it from hearing it so much? For me, the song that ruins DON'T SHOOT ME I'M JUST THE PIANO PLAYER is Texas Love Song. Back in the day, you had to lift the stylus to skip over that distasteful tune. But mostly a solid album.

For me, the song that ruins DON'T SHOOT ME I'M JUST THE PIANO PICKER is Texas Love Song. Back in the day, you had to lift the stylus to skip over that distasteful tune. But mostly a solid album. At the time I was about 14 when I bought the LP and I think the pop stuff was okay with me and Crocodile Rock was maybe even a highlight, but as my tastes matured I think it started to grate on me as a novelty gimmicky song with that ridiculous falsetto la-la-la-la-la all the way through, whereas the rest of the album was much better crafted in the style of his earlier work, and he achieved a massive hit with Daniel so I don't know why the resort to mindless bubblegum of Crocodile Rock was necessary. Just my opinion. I have to say I love the rest of the album including Texan Love Song, which I accept might be lyrically controversial.
Blues For Baby And Me and High Flying Bird are just beautiful and I think the whole album hangs together wonderfully... once Crocodile Rock is banished :-)

Partridge, do you mean “Piano Player”? I was just being witless to see if anyone was paying attention. I like the occasional malaprop.

When that album was current, I used to put on Side 1 as I went to bed. By the time it was finished I would be fast asleep. Hardly lullaby music though.

In between a few terrific ballads, some great pop, clever tracks, Have Mercy On The Criminal is a monster track, really strong and aggressive, Elt's vocalising really needed to be on top form to tackle that track... the album covered a lot of territory.

I always thought the Elton John song, "Tiny Dancer," was about Linda. I know it isn't... but it fits her, the lyrics, the melody and the era.
