I happened to pick up the cd at a sale today. I am not sure I have ever had a copy of this song. I thought it really cool. Figured it might refresh some memories and spark conversation. eddiejinnj

Remove the Homer solo vocals and this will make a good karaoke track to record your own duet with Linda Ronstadt.

this is a gorgeous vocal from Linda ..... and I don't mind the inclusion of Homer!
When I look at the sheer variety of people / characters that Linda has sung with, I do find it astounding. I think it very much reinforces her comments that she just loved to sing.

I agree, Fab. She was involved in a lot of important recordings besides her own projects. eddiejinnj

I much prefer it to the Sinatra Duet :-)

Weird that Linda sings this when the Lurleen Lumpkin character is voiced by Beverly D'Angelo who can also sing. Not at Linda's level by a very fine vocalist.

Was the character on the show way before the album came out? Maybe Beverly was not available. Also, they seemed to have a good report with Linda and she has done that style before (amongst many others). Not sure. In the children's genre (though many adults obviously watch The Simpsons and The Muppet Show) is another area she shines. Her performances in such shows recordings (also including Disney) are top notch and even her acting seems more relaxed especially on "The Muppets". eddiejinnj

I much prefer it to the Sinatra Duet :-) If I'd had my druthers, I'd remove the Homer Simpson (ahem) vocal and replace it with Elvis Presley's. Elvis did a killer version of the song and it was one of a handful of songs Elvis and Linda both did in some way. However, I'm not sure their version is in the same key. Linda also did a snippet of "And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind" (with Glen Campbell and the song's composer Neil Diamond) which I'd also like to mesh with Elvis' s own vocal. However, the problem again is whether their versions are in the same key. I know studio wizardry can put them in the same keys, but I sure would love to hear Linda duet with artists she never got a chance to sing with. Picture also Linda singing with Patsy Cline. Linda did three or four songs that Patsy also did. I'm surprised it hasn't been done.

I'll have to check out Elvis' version. How you been, slide? eddiejinnj Hi Eddie. I'm doing fair in my old age, I guess. My diabetic neuropathy remains confined to my feet and seems quite happy to remain there, though the pain keeps intensifying. I've also developed arthritis in my knees which isn't as bad as the neuropathy, but I take elevators more now than walk up and down the steps. Walking up and down steps is better for me but if the knees give way, I could be in serious trouble. With regard to Elvis' version of "Funny How Time Slips Away," I recommend listening to the version from the album released by Sony Legacy in August, "From Elvis in Nashville." The recordings are undubbed or outtakes, so you don't hear the orchestrations and/or backing vocalists. Elvis's producer Felton Jarvis had a very bad habit of overdubbing a lot of strings, horns and woodwinds and more backing vocalists than seemed to be needed. It was always a bone of contention with RCA that Elvis's recordings didn't need the orchestrations and backing vocals. That he was fine alone with just his rhythm section. Those who tended to side with Felton said it was what Elvis wanted to hear on his recordings, so blaming Felton was unfair. The above link is an undubbed version of the song and it's clean, and you could just picture Linda's vocals meshing nicely with this recording.

Linda's version is closest to Wanda Jackson's I think. Another wonderful Willie Nelson written song.
