I too watched the documentary, Linda & The Mockingbirds. Something stood out to me. Linda mentioned the dancers from her Canciones Show in the late 80's -90's and how "modest," they were in their clothing. Linda said (and I'm paraphrasing) She wanted to show a contrast to how Madonna dressed in that era. She also said, that there was nothing wrong with how Madonna dressed. Granted, Linda never danced around the stage in a cone bra but Linda in her early years and prime could be very seductive and wore little clothing.. I think no panties/bra and barefoot would classify as not modest. I just thought it was a little hypocritical. I understand when people get a little older they tend to become a little more conservative (in dress) and judgmental. It didn't sit right with me.
**Edit Not sure if I heard this from Linda and The Mockingbirds or an interview. Either way, She did say this.

I don't disagree at all that Linda was very seductive, regardless of how much (or little) clothing she wore, not only during the early hippie part of her career, but also during the apex of her rock stardom (1975-1982). I would only make the case that Linda's approach, once she became a star, was not to let the sexual image overwhelm the music; and in any case, she was very shy onstage. Madonna, on the other hand, had no such inhibitions (to say the least); she was arguably prostituting herself and, for lack of a more PC term, selling sex. And I felt that way back then in 1983-84, when "Madge" burst onto the scene, so I guess I was "square" when I was a teenager.

Well, I think to some extent sex always sells and Linda was no shrinking violet (IMO) Lots of guys were in love with Linda and her Album Covers/Posters.. it was an earlier era and the sexual stuff presented itself differently I guess ..When MTV took over everything changed to a more visual.. Madonna seems fairly tame nowadays when you compare her to contemporary performers such as Megan thee Stallion or Cardi B. I don't feel Madonna was prostituting herself.. Yes, many of her songs/videos were/are controversial but many also had/have a strong and serious message.. I get Madonna isn't everybodys cup of tea for whatever reason and yes, Linda is first and foremost a singer whereas Madonna is a dancer first singer second. I was just a little shocked Linda made that comment..

Linda was a fox, and knew it! Bedroom eyes and "come get/save* me" look. I expect she influenced the Daisy Duke dress style in "Dukes of Hazzard", a mid to late 1970s TV show.
Linda radiated sex without the need to shove herself in her audience's faces though, and her singing was her trademark, not soft porn self-marketing.

No question about it, sex always sells; it's all in the manner it gets sold (IMHO). Linda could be both provocative and evocative at the same time, reflecting her two ethnic sides, Anglo and Latina; she just wanted to make sure that the sexy image didn't swamp the substance of her music. That's always a tightrope to walk, and Linda walked it quite successfully for decades.
I also won't disagree about Megan thee Stallion or Cardi B being far more, how shall we say, X-rated than Madonna at her "Material Girl'/"Like A Virgin" peak. It just felt to me that, whatever message she was trying to get across back then, was lost on a lot of very impressionable young people.
As for Linda's original comment about "Madge"--I think you have to chalk it up to her having been cognizant, and perhaps even a bit hypersensitive, to what other women in the music business ever did...and also to the fact that she has been known to say some of the most hopped-up things about herself. I guess it's the nature of who she is, and who she has always been.

I like Madonna as much as the next guy, assuming the next guy is indifferent.
I certainly wouldn't consider her a great singer, but I must be wrong, because by my own calculations, Madonna is the most popular female singer in history. And along the way she made some songs even I liked-- Into the Groove, Papa Don't Preach, Like a Prayer-- right there is 3 more than I can think of that I like by her kiss-partner Britney Spears.
I too may have been an old fogy even when I was young because the first time I ever really paid attention to Madonna was on the MTV Awards where she sang Like A Virgin and writhed around on the floor living like a fool. I thought nobody is going to go for this s**t and i was dead wrong.
And in Linda's defense, she was only making a comparison and said there was nothing wrong with Madonna's attire. As for Linda being without panties on the Johnny Cash show, I wonder if that is a true story or just a legendary tale.

Linda, if she was panty-less, could have been due to her luggage going astray...

Linda knew she was naturally sexy and attractive to men. That said, she had a lot of insecurities about her looks at the same time. Linda is also open about the subject of sexuality, and not prudish at all. Madonna was her own kind of artist, whether you like her or not. She was very savvy about ways to promote herself and the commercial aspects of the music business. Linda's voice was enough to catapult her to stardom without even trying to create an image or persona.

I thought nobody is going to go for this s**t and i was dead wrong. I remember that too. lol.. That move wasn't planned. She lost her shoe. Above all, Madonna is a professional dancer and the instinct was to cleverly retrieve the shoe back while incorporating that move on to the stage floor.

Like A Virgin! Another great Madonna tune. Word on the street is the song was offered to Linda Ronstadt before Madonna recorded it. I like to hear the Keith version from American Idol.
