Anyone here shop at IKEA? What's your opinion of the store and their merchandise?
The nearest one to me is 2.5 hours, either Charlotte or Atlanta. A couple of weeks ago I visited the Charlotte store (my first time at IKEA) and found some things I liked. Everything I liked was out of stock. Could I pay for it and have it shipped? NO. Could I order it on the internet? NO. I'm beginning to think this IKEA experience is pretty sucky. Apparently all I can do is go back and hope it's in stock.
I found some bookcases that were quite beautiful in design but I suspect that underneath that beautiful exterior might just be a bunch of cheap crap. Do any of youse guys have any IKEA shelving?
I left the store only buying some food items at the exit. Cookies were okay but I bought some marshmallow candies that went directly into the trash can.
I am planning to visit the Atlanta location this weekend but I am leery of spending upwards of $1K on bookshelves that might not be durable.

as far as Ikea or any of those types of stores. Crap, as far as I'm concerned.. usually pretty on the outside but as you said, cheaply made. I personally love to shop at thrift stores to find the old and forgotten things that need a bit of refinishing.. staining or repainting.. I found a solid wood and heavy coffee table with beautiful carvings.. for 5 dollars all it needed is to be sanded and refinished in dark mission stain.. Otherwise, for the newer stuff you end up paying up the ying yang for something equally well made.

The tv show. Other day a friend sent me the link to first show. Cute show btw. Yeah, I grew up in a haunted house too and I didn't realize it then but behind us were these huge power line towers(an eye sore too) with all that electricity probably lured them in, and not only our house, many of our back then neighbors had weird stories too.. and the homes wern't that old back then. Didn't that amityville story turn out to be a crock?

Didn't that amityville story turn out to be a crock? You're thinking of Edward Mulhare from the tv show. I haven't seen that show in ages but remember it mostly for Hope Lange (Mrs. Muir) and for a rare tv appearance by singer Harry Nilsson. When that show was on, my family lived in a two story house that we definitely thought was haunted. We were always hearings noises from upstairs when everyone was downstairs. Most of the time, we thought someone went up the old creeky wooden stairs to the upstairs back door, so one of us would go up that way while the other would go up the front stairs, so "anyone" up stairs couldn't get out without running into someone. But, except for one occasion, there was never anyone upstairs. The one exception was that as we were going up the front stairs to investigate another upstairs noise, these two Indians were coming down the stairs. They were looking for a friend of theirs they thought lived there. They made their apologies and left but the curious thing was that they disappeared rather quickly once outside. We lived in one of the longest blocks in town and my younger brother and I followed the two Indians outside to make sure they left. But, we didn't see any sign of them outside whatsoever, and that had us spooked as we were not more than fifteen seconds behind them. But, as for the "Ghost and Mrs. Muir," I've always loved the movie with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney. The movie being in black and white added to the ghostly feel, and the music (by Bernard Hermann) was among the prettiest musical film scores I've ever heard. I sometimes think I'd like to see that movie remade but with Hollywood's penchant for producing more incredibly bad remakes than good remakes, I'd just as soon they left that one alone.

There are no Ikea stores close to where I live and can't think of any in nearby states. We don't have any Costco stores either, which is extremely odd as I see commercials for them on tv, airing at a time when the stations are showing local progamming - which these days are the local news shows. But, the Ikea stores sound like a variation of other stores in the area with cheap goods and so-so quality, especially on the food.

Slide, where was your childhood home at? Indians? that's freaky, at least they were polite.. but still. I remember my first ghost encounter in our family home.. I must have been no more than 7 so it was in the 70's, since I was the only girl, I had my own bedroom, I awoke in the middle of the night and there sat a boy on my cushions, probably 12 dressed from another eratime (that was my first thought) maybe the 40's or 50's. rolled up jeans, pf plyers, combed to the side hair greased up with a wave and a plaid shirt w/ sleeves rolled up.. just sitting there smiling at me. I bolted out of my room to my parents bed and never said a word them. We also heard a lot of strange noises and laughter (which was real creepy) and also doors shutting by itself. At that time the house wasn't that old.. probably built in the mid 50's. so who knows. I love shopping for vintage furniture either on ebay or thrift stores, which as i said are made much better than most of todays stuff.. however, I could be opening up myself more hauntings. lol.. they do attach themselves to items as well, lets hope my findings are from the living who purchased new stuff. lol.

I believe the Amityville house was haunted but the movie embellished it quite a bit. Creepy thing was how the new owner looked like the previous murderer owner.
At a psychic fair in Phoenix back in the 70s I recall a session where the speakers were advocating getting rid of non-original old possessions as they do contain entities and can cause problems in ones life. I like antiques, entities don't bother me much because I know what they are and I don't mind the company. My cats are tuned in also.

Some stuff at IKEA is ok and some is not. Their designs are often cool but you get what you pay for. Not sure I would buy my kitchen cabinets there unless I was on a REAL budget and couldn't wait.

Slide, where was your childhood home at? Indians? that's freaky, at least they were polite..We lived in Oklahoma, and the two story house we lived in I think was the most haunted we ever lived in. There was one other house we lived in, also in Oklahoma and not far from the two story house that was perhaps more scary. My mom was in bed one night and saw her father coming through the walls, trying to touch her. The incident frightened her as her dad had passed away just a short time before and she was pregnant at the time. At the same house, I also remember looking out the window late one night and seeing two "beings" looking in at me and my younger brother, who was asleep. I was six at the time and my brother was three. The beings looked like bigfoots or gorillas with their faces painted up. They could've been Indians, now that I think about it, but I remember screaming and waking my parents. My dad looked around outside but again, whoever or whatever they were, they were gone. They made a lasting impression on me as I can still recall what they looked like and see them in my mind. As for the Indians who came down the stairs at the two story house, I still remember their looks as well, which is amazing given the long period of time that has passed since either event. We were going to call the police because it was kind of scary that a couple of people were in the house without your knowledge and you were there while they were there too. But, that they could disappear so rapidly after walking out of the house - and we watched for them for some time after they left but never reappeared, we figured they had to be ghosts, although pretty solid looking ghosts and not the vapory, misty kind of ghosts most people report seeing. Seeing a strange ghostly person in your room in the middle of the night is especially scary, whether the person is a child or an adult. Your description of the boy probably places him from the 40s or 50s, just as you say, and he sounds like he possibly was a benevolent ghost. I've sometimes wondered how much interaction could there be between a ghost and a physical human being? If they were ghosts. I also believe in the possibility of parallel universes and worlds and think it's possible people from parallel worlds could pop in to this existence and just as easily pop out. I think we can also do that, and think our dreams may be portals to parallel worlds. But, the strange noises and doors shutting were creepy enough for us at the two story house we lived in. We never heard any laughter or any other kind of noisy human sounds at that house (not even the Indians who were upstairs) but I suppose if we had, we might've moved out of that house earlier than when we did. (My parents owned the house but we were always moving - my dad changed houses the way most people changed their clothing.) I love shopping for vintage furniture either on ebay or thrift stores, which as i said are made much better than most of todays stuff.. however, I could be opening up myself more hauntings. lol.. they do attach themselves to items as well, lets hope my findings are from the living who purchased new stuff. lol.
I've bought from ebay and at thrift shops but so far, nothing I've ever bought there has been haunted in any way. I suppose that's because most of the goods that are in those places are from people who are still living or the spirits to whom they once belonged have no earthly attachment to them any longer. If I was to buy something that belonged to someone who was deceased and who still had an attachment to the item, I'd hope they wouldn't mind that it belonged to me and hope they would know they could drop in any time (as long as they were friendly as opposed to unfriendly) and experience the item in whatever way they can.

S C A R Y!!! I still can't get over the fact how polite they were, I heard, ghosts or whatever they are don't really interact with the living and are kind of just going through some kind of repeated motion. Odd.. I say this because my partner, Brian who does not believe in the supernatural at all or isnt afraid of it.. He did say, one time while he was driving through Colorado, I think, by himself no less, he looked over to the passanger side and this older man appeared just sitting there looking out the window.. and also from another time, in overalls.. so Brian real calmly asked him, hey how you doing, can I help you? lol I would have lost it right there!!! The man continued to look out the window and ignore the questions.. for about 15 minutes!!! then he just disappeared after Brian looked away. He also said, the dude looked like a real person.. solid.. as you described.. My ghost on the other hand was a little more transparent and misty. Yes, I did hear creepy laughter in our old house, an old witch laugh in the middle of the night.. my named being called right next to me in the kitchen(I thought it was one of the brothers) yet everyone was outside playing in the front yard. There could be something to that parallel universe idea.. because not long ago, when I lived in so ca.. at work, early about 7 ish, my co worker came through the door and I said hi to her and she nodded hi back.. that was that, then about 1/2 later I asked the girls, where is so and so.. she came in this am, did she leave. turns out, she had a dr's appt and was sched to come in late that day.. weird, I asked her if she had come in early and she said. no. just odd. we're still good friends.

Getting back to old furniture. I found this one which is part of a dining room set 6 chairs, including a captains chair, heavy wood, solid in good shape 39.00 for the entire set. just needs refinishing and to be reupholstered which I'll do myself. I put a piece of similar material on to the chair which Id like to re-do in.. it does make a big difference with the colors in bringing the old into this century and well made, to boot. before with similar material I intend to use to update the thing

When it comes to ghosts and interaction, I've never been 100% sure as to whether there's an absolute curtain or veil or which separates the spiritual realm from the material realm. I think there is, yet I also think it's possible the spirits can interact with the living in some way, whether it's influencing a person through their thoughts or visiting a person through their dreams or being seen as a ghost. When it comes to ghosts - true ghosts - I think we are all still connected in some way to those who lived before us. I also think it could be they are watching over us or don't want to be forgotten or they had unfinished business to take care of in the material world before they could move on within the spiritual world. I think our best connections are our own deceased family members: I've heard the voices of my parents and my older sister around my house and seen them frequently in my dreams, along with other relatives of mine who are also deceased. And I think it's possible that we can have a connection to others we never knew or who knew us - why that would happen, I don't know. Maybe we knew them in a previous life and somehow ended up not being connected in this life? As for the ghosts who just seem to be going through the motions, my thought is those aren't actual ghosts but maybe some sort of portal or window through which we can see people from another era or from a parallel world. They may be aware of us and perceive us just as we are aware of them and perceive them. And from their point of view, they may think we are the ghosts, and maybe we are in their world. The story about your coworker, very weird indeed, and a similar incident happened with me at the place where I worked at the time, only it was my fellow coworkers it happened to, and I was the one they thought they had seen at work, even though I had called in sick that day and had been to the ER. When I went into work the next day, they all swore up and down they had seen me, working alongside them. So did the people we were working for, which was bizarre. To ths day, I still can't explain that. Was it Shakespeare who wrote in one of his plays, something along the lines of 'There are more things in the heavens and earth than are dreamed of in your philosophies?" I don't remember the exact quote but it seems applicable. (And apologies to all for getting off topic.)
